[edit]This is your only warning; if you remove or blank page contents or templates from Wikipedia again, as you did at Kistler Group, you may be blocked from editing without further notice. The Grand Cenobite (talk) 13:46, 14 May 2013 (UTC)
I am revising a company page, the information posted was not wanted. How do i continue working on the page, and what do i need to do in order for it not to be deleted again?
- Unfortunately, Wikipedia is not a business directory, and companies don't get to choose what is written about them in Wikipedia. Wikipedia is a collaborative encyclopedia, and many hands go into writing about any given company. You may change what is written about Kistler Group, but you may not turn the article into an advertisement for Kistler. WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 15:15, 14 May 2013 (UTC)
I understand that, but the information posted is not representative of the company as a whole. I was looking to add three sub categories that describe it's business more in depth. In no way am I trying to use Wiki as spam. I dont believe any information was posted that wasn't purely informative. Who makes the decision if is an advertisement? I dont think any type of business acquisition was asked for. Only detailing the business background and work that Kistler does, which are all factually supported by the website. Just want to make sure im following the guidelines of Wiki.
- You wrote the following on the Kistler Group page:
- Sensors and systems for measuring forces and torques, analyzing force-displacement and force-time characteristics, and documenting quality data during assembly and product testing are just a few elements of the solutions for the sector provided by Kistler Insturments AG. From our head-quarters in Switzerland, we supply assembly and testing technology as well as specific sensors and monitoring systems for combustion engines, automotive engineering, plastics processing and biomechanical engineering.
- This is ad-speak (and the fact that you reference the company's own brochure doesn't help!). Articles are to be written in a neutral tone, and the use of first-person pronouns is a definite problem.
- Since you appear to be writing on behalf of Kistler Group, you appear to have a conflict of interest. Rather than edit the article, I would suggest a better path is to post on the article's talk page, identifying yourself as a representative of company, and requesting any changes you feel are necessary (with citations to verify that your changes are correct). Other uninvolved editors can then assess whether your requests are reasonable or not. WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 15:51, 14 May 2013 (UTC)
Ok, understood. Is it possible for you to put the deleted items back up so I can make the necessary changes or do I have to start over again?
- All your edits are still there -- check the "history" link on the page. WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 16:44, 14 May 2013 (UTC)
That was the previous history content. How is the first paragraph now?
Hi, the issue for me is that the focus of the wiki page is currently solely on ballistics, which is a sliver of the company focus. The current content is also cited from the company website. I am doing nothing more than adding the more important components of the company. My question is, could I create a new page for Kistler to avoid deleting any currently posted information? talk
- No, the absolutlely last thing you want to do is to create a new page about a topic that already exists. That is called content forking, and is discouraged. What you should do is update the page based on reliable sources, which you must cite when making the changes. Removing content that is cited, to replace it with content that is not, is always problematic. However, if there is information in reliable sources regarding the wider scope of the company's operations, then by all means, add it (in a neutral tone please!). Thank you for the response, my last question is regarding 'reliable sources', I searched through a few related pages to our company and found that these other pages were using content sited from their own company website. I just want to make sure that a company website IS a reliable source when properly cited. I will do my best to pull information from other (third party) reliable sources such as articles or memos as well. Thanks again. talk
- No, in general, a company's own website is not a reliable source for anything but the most basic facts about a company (such as its location, the names of its officers, and a general description of the businesses in which the company participates). Companies create websites to promote their businesses, and they do not subject those websites to any form of editorial review to assure that the facts are an accurate and fair representation of the company. Third party sources such as newspaper and magazine articles are considered reliable sources. The fact that other articles in Wikipedia use corporate websites for citations does not mean it is a good idea; only that those other articles have not been properly brought up to standards yet.
