Googol/Google

[edit]

Googleplex reference: I have a signed copy of the original paperback Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and the word is there on page 127. Briantist 22:22, 2 November 2006 (UTC)

  • A search-engine related reference (from the first book, 1979, Chapter 25, page 127) when Lunkwill and Fook are shocked at Deep Thought's self-depreciation: "And are you not," said Fook leaning anxiously forward, "a greater analyst than the Googleplex Star Thinker in the Seventh Galaxy of Light and Ingenuity which can calculate the trajectory of every single dust particle throughout a five-week Dangrabad Beta sand blizzard?" (Note the spelling is the same as Google, not the number googol).

Clearly it is a reference to the fact that Google took their word, perhaps unwittingly, from the book, not the other way round!!

I have restored the referenece as it is already on the Googleplex page. Briantist 23:47, 2 November 2006 (UTC)

Flamerion

[edit]

It's well documented that Douglas Adams spent time in Greece playing his guitar in bars to earn money for his travels.

My apologies

[edit]

John, I' am sorry about that small article I wrote about Mercury at WVHS. I' am not Waubonsie's enemy Neuqua or trying to vandalize pages or anything like that it's just that the Mercury incident really happened and I thought I should post events like that but now I see that I shouldn't post stuff about just some small things like that on articles so anyway I just wanted to let you know I'm sorry and for continuing to post it on the WVHS page. -Paul Ittoop 10:22 4 November 2006 (UTC)

You won't be able to find it in the Media or any reference. I knew because I go to this school as mentioned in my User Page. -Paul Ittoop 1:17 4 November 2006 (UTC)

Minor characters from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

[edit]

Thanks for cleaning up my links on this page. Briantist 03:08, 8 November 2006 (UTC)

I have an old list to check it against if you're feeling in the mood. I'm busy tomorrow, so I'll have a look at it later...

[snip!]

Much of that stuff is in the "Ultra-Complete Index" which I think is on Wikibooks now. The main articles here are the Minor characters page and Races and Species in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. --JohnDBuell 03:15, 8 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'll cross reference the list with the Minor Characters page Briantist 13:08, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
And I might be able to grab all my Hitch Hiker's reference books today too! Briantist 13:10, 8 November 2006 (UTC)

fark.com: ultrafark

[edit]

i noticed you reverted someone's submission of ultrafark, citing redundancy, when there is no other reference to ultrafark in the article. i don't quite understand your reasoning for this. --emerson7 02:01, 11 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

why? because it's an on-going joke, and part of the lore. i don't know if you visit the site or not, but ultrafark is always being referenced in the threads. though not very well written, the inclusion of ultrafark is a valid submission. --emerson7 03:34, 11 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
cool, while i agree with your reasoning wholeheartedly, i think a revert is a bit draconian. anyway, thanks for the chat and the time. cheers! --emerson7 04:16, 11 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Question

[edit]

Did you realize you deleted BlueValour's comments on the Talk:Reading program? Why did you edit his comments? Are you User:BlueValour too? – Chris53516 (Talk) 18:40, 20 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No, and that's odd - I should have received an edit conflict message. --JohnDBuell 18:42, 20 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello JohnDBuell. I noticed you edited the page Douglas Adams to improve the ambiguous links to Cambridge, England, and accordingly removed the Template:Ambiguous link tags. The Template:Ambiguous link tag is in fact a new one which I am thinking of. I would be interested to hear any comments you had on Template:Ambiguous link. My comments are at Wikipedia talk:Disambiguation#Ambiguous link marking. Thanks, Duckbill 20:29, 4 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The Original Barnstar
Your work with fighting vandalism here on Wikipedia is worthy of note, but this is for your continued exellence on this site, mostly with the History of the board game Monopoly article. Good job! Sharkface217 00:16, 13 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You're quite welcome. I'm glad that I helped.... vindicate your effort. Sharkface217 01:18, 13 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re:Page moves

[edit]

That was entirely my bad, and I apologize. I was doing mass moves from (TV series) to (television series) and I figured that someone would eventually get around to updating the redirects. Geniac, has just brought to my attention that WP:TV-NAME is being disputed, however; and discussion on the talk page looks like it's going to result in (TV series) being the standard ("(television series) was the standard being used on the page when I referred to it"). I'm really sorry for any inconvenience caused (especially since I've already updated about twenty or so redirects to "television") but I'll try and undo the damage ASAP. -ryand 19:02, 14 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Album pages

[edit]

WP:INN which itself says is only an essay...

Ah, starting off with the wikilawyering, always a good beginning.

Clue for you: rule, essay, guideline, dessert topping, or floor wax; what it is, doesn't matter. What does is the point, that whining about how other bad articles exist is no free pass for the bad articles you want to keep. Whether you or I piss off the Finns is not my concern.

So they issued 27 albums? So what? Did they sell a lot of them? Can you prove it? Did any of them have any impact besides as public-radio giveaways? Is there anything that can be said other than track listings? Any verifiable and reliable sources that tells you anything other than directory-style information? If not, what's the point of having them? --Calton | Talk 16:41, 28 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

History of the board game Monopoly

[edit]

Thanks for reverting me. Good catch. I am usually quite careful about such things, but I missed the 1935 date associated with that section. Hu 08:42, 31 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Brazilian HHGG website.

[edit]

Hi, I'm just writing to let you know (in case you're not watching my talk page) that I've answered your question. User_talk:Kieff#Brazilian Portuguese Hitchhiker's fan site?Kieff 20:04, 7 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

new user saying hello

[edit]

i saw an assumption in one of the fringe articles for HHGG (Differences in versions of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy) and made a comment on it in the discussion. im not up and up on wiki-law, so i thought id find a way to drop you a line about it instead of awkardly trying to edit it myself. also noticed you're from the naperville area when i got to your personal page... im from romeoville. and also any advice would be welcome. Thanks for uploading Image:International Monopoly board game editions.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. Sal Doonesbury

[edit]

I thought I was pretty solid on my Doonesbury trivia, and never knew that Duke owned the Dr. Whoopee franchise. When did that detail come about? Thanks! --Happylobster 19:16, 29 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

WAHS Saigon

[edit]

Sorry for error. I go to West, and for the past month they have been billing it as the first high school in IL to perform "Miss Saigon", so thus that is what I knew. So like always (happened with "Cats" too), some other high school beats us to it. Oh well, just as long as West's production is great. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Hoping4nash (talkcontribs) 21:59, 8 March 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Interesting, another Buell

[edit]

Hey, I'm Alex Buell. Lived in Winslow, Arkansas until last year, when I moved to Bentonville, Arkansas. Just happened to notice your name and figured I'd mention it. Wonder if we're related. I don't know of any Buells in Oklahoma, but then again, I don't really know much of the family tree on my dad's side.--SeizureDog 12:13, 15 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

IPs and uncivil edit summaries

[edit]

Hi John. I understand the edit summary your reported to WP:ANI upset you, and please don't take this the wrong way, but I would suggest that you just ignore it. It seems to be a fact of life that some people have nothing better to do that run around the internet being huge jerks, or at least a fact of life on the internet, and there usually isn't anything that can be done to prevent it. The best action is to ignore it. And believe me, I have been a target of numerous childish personal attacks, including some in edit summaries and one page-move vandalism of my userpage. I have found that "revert, block when appropriate, ignore" is the least stressful course of action. Natalie 00:05, 28 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I am a coding Luditte, so I don't know what that would entail in the coding of the MediaWiki software. I believe (but don't know for sure) that the current thinking is that Oversight exists, so there isn't a need to erase edit summaries and not the edits. But dev stuff is like Ancient Greek to me. Natalie 00:17, 28 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The following headlines contain all the information from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (fictional device), which I didn't find in The Guide (character). Otherwise it's all there (in addition to a lot more). So if this is added, nothing is lost. So please add what you find fitting into the latter article.

Publisher

[edit]

In the first chapter of the story we get to know that on earth, though, it was never published, and Arthur was the first homo sapiens to ever hear about the guide.

Entries

[edit]

The second chapter says that it contains many omissions and much that is either apocryphal or at least wildly inaccurate, but otherwise contains almost the same as older, "more pedestrian" work.

Physical properties

[edit]

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is described as a "micro sub meson electronic component"-format, since it countains so much information, that it would require a space of "several inconveniently large buildings" to carry it. The size of the contents is stated to be "a million" pages, i.e. smaller than wikipedia. However, if the former description would apply, more than a billion pages would be a better estimation. Mortsggah 06:03, 31 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have added a "{{prod}}" template to the article Capitol Steps Synchronized Skating Teams, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but I don't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and I've explained why in the deletion notice (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may contest the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. re. your comment on the additions I made the other day to the Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency page

[edit]

"nice additions but they need cleanup (and I don't have time right now, sorry))"

Thanks! Nice to know one's contribs to wiki are appreciated (as well as being chopped, changed, deleted or argued about). I originally was just going to add a couple of points, but ended up writing a lot more than I intended. I'd forgotten just HOW convoluted the plot was! I'll try & do some refining & cleanup myself, but would welcome any & all help. Cheers Vivamancer 19:31, 10 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
