Infobox cricketer...

Hi, my watchlist tells me you were trying to fix a spacing error with the infobox. Have you an example of it happening? If it is what I think it is, and it is justifying the text wrapping onto two lines, I tend to force a line break before the first team/country which seems to work. If it is anything else, we'll see how we can fix it.

MDCollins 22:26, 6 January 2009 (UTC)

Nothing major, I just noticed on Luke Wright's Last ODI section the ":" after the date and the "v" were together whereas on the ODI debut there was a space between them, checking some other cricketers and the same thing affected all of their Last ODI sections. I attempted to add a space in the right place but it seemed to make no difference. --Jpeeling (talk) 11:08, 7 January 2009 (UTC)

Think I've done it - it was probably where you put it before, but I find it takes a while to get past the cache on my machine - maybe that was the case for you. Have a look at some further players and it should be fixed. Incidentally, I've scrapped the colons anyway as they take up a character space and don't really add anything.—MDCollins 00:32, 9 January 2009 (UTC)

Yep looks fine now, thanks for your help. --Jpeeling (talk) 17:14, 9 January 2009 (UTC)

Hi again, thanks for the email - that's fine with me; I expect a bot could do it, (even Sambot on a run through - but that won't standardise the rest). While we're doing it, could I request that we keep Test and ODI singular (rather than [[Test cricket|Tests]]/ODIs, which just look wrong to me, what do you think? To my mind, I think of it as 'Test statistics' and we don't have FCs or LAs etc do we. This may be a case of correcting it manually on sight, and seeing if others can do the same.—MDCollins 00:42, 11 January 2009 (UTC)

According to AWB there's 60 odd articles that have IT20 so I may do it myself. I was slightly worried that changing them would cause the infobox to 'mess-up' (very technical term) but I see from my edit to Jonathan Trott that the section would just disappear. On the other point I agree that Test should be used, I know I've used Tests a couple of times but that's when I've been lazy and have copied from an existing infobox, it's not a conscious choice. --Jpeeling (talk) 15:57, 11 January 2009 (UTC)

Umpire info

Hi,

That's funny - I found the same problem with another umpire the night before last but made a hash of fixing it. I'll try again (so that if umplastyr (or whatever it is) is left blank it just displays the same year. I'll have a look now.—MDCollins 23:15, 3 February 2009 (UTC)

Done. Just leave out the duplicate year.—MDCollins (talk) 23:43, 3 February 2009 (UTC)
Thanks once again. --Jpeeling (talk) 10:35, 4 February 2009 (UTC)

Female cricketers

Hi,

That's really strange cos it should work like you suggested (and didn't need the workaround) - saying that, for a box I entered (Laura Harper), I did exactly as yourself - it shouldn't be necessary if you look at the coding... —MDCollins (talk) 22:51, 22 February 2009 (UTC)

Ron Hayward

The name seems to ring a bell with me. ISTR him as being a sponsor of the game - possibly women's cricket in particular - circa the 1970s. Or maybe he sponsored some of the rebel tours to South Africa? So he could be notable even though he doesn't have a CI or CA entry. JH (talk page) 10:50, 23 February 2009 (UTC)

I now realise that I was thinking of Jack Hayward, so Ron probably isn't notable. However I don't think that the absence of a CI or CA entry is always sufficient to prove non-notability, as some notable cricketer writers, administrators etc may not have an entry. MOS:FLAG

Hi. On your reversion of the use of the Indian flag in Tendulkar's infobox, you cited MOS:Flag. However it states that "The country name may be omitted if a flag appears with its country name earlier in a list or table. When a flag icon is needed more than once, the flag-and-name template, for example  Japan, or its shorter variant  JPN should be used first, but may be reduced to Japan in subsequent uses. However, some editors feel that some tables such as those containing sports statistics (example) are easier to read if  [[|]] is used throughout." MOS:Flag also states that for sportspeople "Flags should never indicate the player's nationality in a non-sporting sense; flags should only indicate the sportsperson's national squad/team or sporting nationality." As a result I'm not entirely clear as to why  India was replaced by India, considering that  India did represent Tendulkar's sporting nationality, and was not explicitly referring to his nationality in a non-sporting sense. --Elostirion (talk) 03:27, 1 March 2009 (UTC)

Firstly list and tables are different from infoboxes. The piece of MOS:FLAG that I was thinking of is: "The use of flag icons in the birth and death information in a biographical article's introduction and/or infobox is forbidden". There is also a fairly recent discussion about the use of flags in cricketers infoboxes. Finally I replaced {{IND}} with "India" as the usefulness of a link to India would be slim to none. --Jpeeling (talk) 10:41, 1 March 2009 (UTC)
Thank you very much for your reply. For some reason I didn't notice that the text I cited referred specifically to lists and tables. --Elostirion (talk) 18:06, 1 March 2009 (UTC)

Flag of Ireland

According to Wikipedia, the Ireland Cricket team represents both the Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland and so there is no harm in putting the Flag of Republic of Ireland on the particular page of 2011 Cricket World Cup or on any other related page. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Aru123 (talkcontribs) 14:24, 10 May 2009 (UTC)

From Wikipedia:Manual of Style (icons): "Icons can represent a specific entity and should not be repurposed to represent something else, e.g. because an actually appropriate flag is not available." I know it looks better if there's a flag there but accuracy should take precedent over aesthetics in a encyclopedia. --Jpeeling (talk) 20:37, 10 May 2009 (UTC)

Herbie Taylor

Thanks for your work on his. Taylor is something of a hero of mine, and I'm glad that such an important figure now has the sort of article that he merits. JH (talk page) 18:41, 21 May 2009 (UTC)

You're welcome. I don't know if you remember but you made similar comments when I first expanded the article 18 months ago. After being slightly miffed that BlackJack downgraded it to start-class I put it on my to do list to rewrite with some inline refs and I eventually got round to it. You say now so you weren't too happy with my first attempt either ;)
I think the article is as good as I can get it, I was relying entirely on scorecards and Wisden reports as there's very little in the books I have and there's no avaliable biography. --Jpeeling (talk) 22:40, 21 May 2009 (UTC)

I notice you have tagged several images lately as NPD. Please note that the NPD tag is not applicable to images where the uploader says he created the image; it is for use when the image is sourced to someone else other than the uploader but there is no evidence that the third party has released the image under the given license. If you think an uploader is falsely claiming copyright on an image and releasing it, you need WP:PUF. Stifle (talk) 14:18, 29 May 2009 (UTC)

Apolgises for that, images aren't my forte. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction and I will bear the above information in mind in the future. --Jpeeling (talk) 17:55, 1 June 2009 (UTC)

Thanks very much for the tip about Mayne and Ponsford's partnership (and your other suggestions, all of which were useful). I honestly had no idea and there was no excuse for my ignorance in what is supposed to be a comprehensive article. Thanks again, Mattinbgn\talk 13:03, 2 June 2009 (UTC)

No problem, it did seem a suprising omission given the depth of the article. Well done on the piece and good luck with the FAC. --Jpeeling (talk) 21:01, 2 June 2009 (UTC)

Apologies

I was unaware of the situation with regard to the first-class status of Cardiff UCCE. Thank you for clarifying that this player is, as yet, non-notable. I'm certain he will make another appearance soon enough, and I will be ready as and when this happens. Thank you. Bobo. 12:37, 11 June 2009 (UTC)

No worries. TBH I wasn't sure which UCCE sides had first-class status, but the very young Middlesex line-up seemed to indicate it wasn't a first-class match and CA backed that up. --Jpeeling (talk) 21:28, 11 June 2009 (UTC)

Logo of the Indian National Cricket Team

Hello,

I noticed that you had reverted the change that I had made to the wikipage of the Indian National Cricket team. The usage of the logo of the BCCI rather than the flag of the Republic of India is correct for the following reasons:

1. It is consistent with similar usage elesewhere (See wikipages of England Cricket Team, Australian Cricket Team, Srilankan Cricket Team, Pakistan Cricket Team, Bangladesh Cricket Team etc) 2. The so called Indian National Cricket team does not truly represent the Republic of India. This was a ruling given by the Supreme Court of India. (http://cricket.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/articleshow/msid-1012207,prtpage-1.cms). They represent a team selected by the BCCI. This is the reason why the jerseys of teh Indian Cricket team do not carry the Indian flag (they merely carry the colors of the Indian flag).

So, with this information, I am undoing your change in the article and reverting to the version of the page with the BCCI logo.

Vikram 1982 (talk) vikram —Preceding undated comment added 19:41, 13 June 2009 (UTC).

Apologises for that, I had wrongly assumed and failed to check any other national cricket teams of which most, but not all, use the board's logo. Personally I think a national flag should be used as team's represent the nation and not the board, to even suggest that Sachin scored 42 Test centuries for the BCCI is ludicrous. However having put aside my own opinion the board's logo should be used for the first reason you gave, the majority of existing teams are that way. --Jpeeling (talk) 10:29, 14 June 2009 (UTC)

Re:Categorisation

Hi, thank you for the message. I have read the page however it has not convinced me on one point. I was intentionally adding the category following what is done on each Indian Muslims' page. They are also religously affiliated to their religion however it does not in itself, particularly influence their areas of expertise e.g. there are many names in that category who are simple actors or minor notable people and yet their religion stance does not somewhat relate. Because they have still been categorised too, I was doing the same thing. 123.211.91.93 (talk) 11:38, 16 June 2009 (UTC)

Well following the status quo is fine if there's no direct policy/guideline regarding the issue but when there is it should be followed. A statement like 'people should only be categorized by ethnicity or religion if this has significant bearing on their career' seems clear to me so the correct cause of action would be to remove the Category:Indian Muslims from the pages of Indian muslims who's religion has no significant bearing on their career. Secondly you were also adding Category:Pakistani people when there's a clear notice on that page that articles should be in a subcategory, e.g. Category:Pakistan Test cricketers or Category:Pakistan ODI cricketers which was already on the pages. --Jpeeling (talk) 12:08, 16 June 2009 (UTC)

That is his nickname. I heard Sarwan and Chanderpaul call him that. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Singh246 (talkcontribs) 21.01, 17 June, 2009

So an editor and an IP (who could easily be that same person) claim they've heard it, I'm not going to check but I think it's safe to say that doesn't count as a reliable source. According to 1, 2 sources his nickname is Cramps so if you wish to add that feel free but without a reliable source it's a no for 'Gayle Force'. --Jpeeling (talk) 20:27, 17 June 2009 (UTC)

Gosh, I had forgotten I had added this. Yes, indeed. I was adding a whole pile of Irish cricketers as the time and clearly I had forgotten to remove him from my list despite not having played for the senior team.

Cheers for noticing. I will remove the prod notice from my talk page but I will let it run its course. All the best. Bobo. 21:07, 24 June 2009 (UTC)

That's fine, I didn't think you would object but thought I should follow procedure. Keep up the good work. --Jpeeling (talk) 21:13, 24 June 2009 (UTC)

Why were the Champions League Twenty20 team logos removed?

Can you expand on your reason "images are non-free so shouldn't be used excessively". These are thumbnail images from Wikipedia itself. 203.206.108.116 (talk) 02:01, 27 June 2009 (UTC)France

The majority of the images are non-free (copyrighted) so to be used should meet the criteria laid out here. Criteria eight states: "Non-free content is used only if its presence would significantly increase readers' understanding of the topic, and its omission would be detrimental to that understanding", I don't believe this criteria is meet. Also it is stated in the fair use rationale that the logos are only to be used for the club/team article, to use them in another article a seperate rationale needs to be provided (Criteria 10c). --Jpeeling (talk) 10:32, 27 June 2009 (UTC)

I'm only responding for I feel you are being a little to too pedantic about this. if there is no pragmatic reason for dropping the images then I can't see the problem, it is helping to promote cricket, these domestic sides are being marketed to the world as well as their communities let them have their stage. Wiki began as a free for all and now its an Orwellian nightmare to be honest. Anyway - First point, having images accommodates the illiterate thus increasing readers' understanding of the topic - this is an accessibility issue. Second point, these are teams who have accepted an invitation to a CLUB tournament and are being represented as such and see first point. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 203.206.108.116 (talkcontribs) 12:39, 27 June 2009

I'm not being pedantic I'm adhering to Wikipedia policy, the policy which stops people using COPYRIGHTED images willy-nilly. I don't see what either of your following points have to do with it. I am reverting your edit again and should you choose to revert my edit I shall seek administrative assistance. --Jpeeling (talk) 11:58, 27 June 2009 (UTC)

I find your comments contemptible and dismissive. These images are not being used willy-nilly. There are issues of accessibility here that you are not addressing - images serve to communicate as equally as text! Escalate it if you must.

Neil Gill

Again, thank you. I'll let it run its course. Are there any other Irish cricketers still to be tagged? Bobo. 10:11, 30 June 2009 (UTC)

Please do, including McKenna. Thank you for noticing these. Bobo. 10:26, 30 June 2009 (UTC)

RE:Pragyan Ojha

Hi, I Understand that the picture of Pragyan Ojha i used was from internet, But why the hell r u deleting the things i wrote about him. God damn, I was his school senior and the things i wrote about him came straight from my mind. Can you please do a research before editing other's writings blatantly?? Now, please dont edit the things i write about him as i wrote them on my own and didnot lift it from any where.

Thanks. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Pranabrulez (talkcontribs) 12:45, 3 July 2009 (UTC)

Well as I explained in the edit summary the text you added was copied word for word from here, copyrighted text isn't allowed and should be deleted, hence I deleted it. Do you really think that I'm stupid enough to believe that you came up with those words from your head?
Once again in your most recent edit you have copied from the same source and once again I have removed that text. Once again the image you added was from elsewhere and not your own work as you claim. I will reiterate once again that if you continue to break Wikipedia rules regarding copyrights you will be blocked. --Jpeeling (talk) 13:47, 3 July 2009 (UTC)

As I said earlier, i was his school senior. So things will obviously will be in my head when i write about him.And If you are stupid enough not to believe that, its your fault.Anyways i have edited a pic i took with him in my state airport and used it this time.So you can search anywhere but i challenge u wont find it. Pranabrulez

I really don't understand what going to the same school has to do with it. The facts are you copied a lot of text from another website and passed it off as your own, then when I rightly removed it as a copyright violation you have the bare faced cheek to say that it "came straight from my mind". It's clear to anyone that you copied and pasted that's why I asked whether you think I'm stupid. --Jpeeling (talk) 15:25, 3 July 2009 (UTC)

Oh!!Come on!! U mean to say watever information and Pics are available in Wikipedia are works of its users only!!! I can give u thousand links of wikipedia where the images used are from the Net. So wat will u say about them?? Pranabrulez

Copyrighted images can be used if the image has non-free media use rationale and the correct licensing information which neither of your images did. For text you can only use copyright text if you have the permission of the copyright holder. If you had read the warning that I posted on your user page and the accompanying links then you would already know that. --Jpeeling (talk) 12:23, 6 July 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for letting me know - it looks as if they have fixed things as I would have expected. I didn't take it up with CA so thanks for doing so. I will correct the Derbs one, but may have to leave the Lancs one as a stub. Regards Motmit (talk) 13:25, 5 July 2009 (UTC)

Looks like a minor English club, but can't make out much from the page; if kept, it needs to be stubbed. Can you take a look? -SpacemanSpiffCalvinHobbes 19:53, 20 July 2009 (UTC)

The project's notability guideline is playing in the highest level of amateur cricket which is one of the ECB Premier Leagues in England. Earls Barton play in the first division of the Northamptonshire Cricket League (NCL)[1], a league below the premier division of the NCL which is one of the ECB Premier Leagues. So it fails 'our' notability guidelines, which I believe would be considered quite generous by the wider Wikipedia. The article is quite poor, the first XI section is a match report and the Youth section is unencyclopedic, the lead would be considered a stubbish start but that info is copied from the village's page so I see nothing worth keeping. I PRODed a similarly obscure village cricket club recently and it was redirected so I don't think there's anything wrong with doing that in this case. --Jpeeling (talk) 20:57, 20 July 2009 (UTC)
Perfect, I remembered your PROD on North Bradley CC, so figured you might know best on this club. I'm not too familiar with English cricket at the club level. -SpacemanSpiffCalvinHobbes 21:34, 20 July 2009 (UTC)

Thanks, and thanks

  1. For your incredibly thorough inspection of the hat-trick list. I worked out what I'd done wrong with the one you removed - Fowler scored two that season with different clubs so I'd overlooked him needing to be there twice. Fixed now.
  2. For your excellent work on the ODI hat-trick list. I hated to nominate it for removal but it had to be sorted out. You've turned a bunch of facts into a very good list indeed. Excellent work. The Rambling Man (talk) 12:18, 21 July 2009 (UTC)
You're welcome. I'm not sure I did that much with the ODI list, all the information was there it was just a matter of tidying it up. Well done on the Premier list and sorry if I caused you too much work ;) --Jpeeling (talk) 20:47, 21 July 2009 (UTC)

Actually we don't know who will qualify from the Twenty20 cup, last night's matches decided the semi-finalists but only two teams, the finalists, qualify. I'm not an administrator so can't unlock the page but semi-protection ends on the 4 August prior to finals day (15 August) so you will be able to update the English qualifiers when we know who they are. --Jpeeling (talk) 08:03, 28 July 2009 (UTC)

We will know 29th July —Preceding unsigned comment added by 203.206.127.218 (talk) 15:23, 28 July 2009 (UTC)

No, we will know on the 15th August. The quarter-finals are currently taking place so on the 29th July we'll know the four semi-finalists, but only two teams qualify for the Champions League so the semi-finals, which are played on the 15th August, need to take place. --Jpeeling (talk) 16:15, 28 July 2009 (UTC)
