File Copyright problem
File Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading File:Entry Ext 1.jpg. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status and its source. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously.

If you did not create this work entirely yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the page from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of the website's terms of use of its content. If the original copyright holder is a party unaffiliated with the website, that author should also be credited. You will also need to state under what licensing terms it was released. Please refer to the image use policy to learn what files you can or cannot upload on Wikipedia. The page on copyright tags may help you to find the correct tag to use for your file.

Please add this information by editing the image description page. If the necessary information is not added within the next days, the image will be deleted. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem.

Please also check any other files you may have uploaded to make sure they are correctly tagged. Here is a list of your uploads. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Eeekster (talk) 01:48, 12 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Problems with upload of File:Speed Art Museum.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Speed Art Museum.jpg. You don't seem to have said where the image came from, who created it, or what the copyright status is. We require this information to verify that the image is legally usable on Wikipedia, and because most image licenses require giving credit to the image's creator.

To add this information, click on this link, then click the "Edit" tab at the top of the page and add the information to the image's description. If you need help, post your question on Wikipedia:Media copyright questions.

Lena, as you can see, Wikipedia is extremely careful in its image licensing policy. There are two basic routes (I know this is really confusing, I've been there):

1) FREE images go to Wikimedia Commons (yes, not -Pedia) which houses ONLY COPYRIGHT-FREE media, mainly images. The Commons is not an encyclopedia at all but a repository of images, sounds and videos. It lives at http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Main_Page; the copyright holder has to give the copyright to the world, free, and then anyone can use it on Wikipedia (with the -P- in the middle, the encyclopedia) or anywhere else they like. This is actually very easy to do and the best route. 2) NON-FREE images usually can't be put on Wikipedia at all. In special cases (<blushes>) it is possible to argue the case with the judge by writing an essay explaining to Wikipedia (with the -P- in the middle, the encyclopedia) why it is ok to bend the rules just this one time.

If you don't choose routes (1) or (2) then you'll get smacked by the system - first a warning by the Bot (above) and then the file will vanish. What you need to do now is to license the file, normally by saying whose file it is. If that isn't you personally then you'll also need to provide Wikipedia with a FULL permission form (I think the form needs to be tweaked in 3 places, not just one) filled in by the copyright owner and emailed to the permissions people at Wikipedia. Hope this is clear, there really are very full instructions if you follow the directions from the link the bot gave you above. Good luck Chiswick Chap (talk) 07:31, 2 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Chiswick Chap! Thank you so much for your suggestions. I hope I have followed through with uploading to the Wikipedia creative commons correctly. Please let me know if I need to add anything else. I really appreciate your help with this. Best, Lenawhyarch (talk) 17:45, 2 December 2011 (UTC)Lenawhyarch[reply]

Thank you for uploading File:Speed Art Museum.jpg. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright and licensing status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can verify that it has an acceptable license status and a verifiable source. Please add this information by editing the image description page. You may refer to the image use policy to learn what files you can or cannot upload on Wikipedia. The page on copyright tags may help you to find the correct tag to use for your file. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. — Train2104 (talk • contribs) 20:41, 3 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Lena - I think the warning message applies to the Speed file you put on Wikipedia - it is a duplicate of the copy you put on Wikimedia Commons, so it's actually OK if it gets deleted - the Commons file won't be touched, I think. You can ask the helpdesk (link above) if worried. Chiswick Chap (talk) 21:24, 3 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
