A tag has been placed on Maidenhead Astronomical Society requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not indicate the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for biographies.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the article does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that a copy be emailed to you. -Toon05 16:47, 20 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Maidenhead Astronomical Society requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an article with no content whatsoever, or whose contents consist only of external links, "See also" section, book reference, category tag, template tag, interwiki link, rephrasing of the title, or an attempt to contact the subject of the article. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

Maidenhead Astronomical Society

[edit]

Hello, I recently marked the article you created for speedy deletion. This is because you didn't say how this organisation was notable, and there was no content. We don't do "placeholder" articles in wikipedia, it's a waste of space, and you would just have loads of articles with little or no information in them promising to fill them in later, serving as just an advert for a website etc. Things have to be notable on wikipedia so that we have a way of verifying that what is in the article is true, and stop this ncyclopaedia becoming like myspace or facebook. My advice to you is to read this - Wikipedia:Notability (organizations and companies), which explains what is notable and what isn't, and if your group satisfies any of the criteria, then re-add your article, but make sure you assert why it is notable. Please don't get offended, there are many, many articles created each day which are spam, people thinking the world wants to know about their pet frizbee... the list goes on. -Toon05 19:38, 20 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry if I sound as glib as I think I'm about to, but your chance to demonstrate the topic as notable was there before you even formally submitted the article. If an article can't stand on its own, it's best not to put it up right away, or its deletion is predictable and nearly inevitable. What I might do in your position is, if you reach a stopping point but haven't yet rigged things up well enough that it won't be deleted, copy the article's contents thus far to a text document or something so you can pick it up later. You don't need to put the article up on the actual wiki until it's good and ready. For info on notability, take a look at WP:Notability and the appropriate sub-pages. - Vianello (talk) 19:39, 20 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've read the note that you left on the talk page of the above-noted article and didn't want you to think that we just go around deleting pages willy-nilly. I haven't read the deleted content in detail but, in my experience, deleted articles about a group of this sort suffer from one of two (or both) sorts of problems -- either the group is not notable or there are no reliable sources that back up that notability in a verifiable way. Simply put, it's not enough that the group exists -- the group must in some way be "special", superior to other groups, better-known, or meet other definitions that you can look up at this link where notability is defined. That notability must be asserted within the body of the article, and the assertion must be backed up with reference to third-party, arm's-length expert sources that say so.
I also wanted to mention that the argument "They have an article so we should be able to have an article" doesn't carry much weight here. You can read the policy page at WP:WAX for the particular response, but essentially each article is considered in and of itself, without reference to others. If there are articles here that you feel don't meet our notability guidelines, you are welcome to tag them for assessment and/or deletion in the same way that yours has been tagged.
If you believe that it's possible that your group actually does meet our notability guidelines, and you feel there are enough reliable sources to back that up, I'd be happy to find the deleted material and restore it into a "sandbox" page so that you could work on adding the references, etc., without fear of instant deletion. If this is something you want, or if you have any other questions about Wikipedia policy, feel free to leave me a note (I won't be much around in the next week but I will be checking in from time to time). Accounting4Taste:talk 19:43, 20 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
One further piece of information -- "holding pages" aren't allowed here, because the constant problem is that they never progress beyond being holding pages. If you'd like to work on the article and make it meet our guidelines before posting it, a "sandbox" page is the way to go -- if you want help in making one, let me know and I'll do it for you. Accounting4Taste:talk 19:45, 20 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your note. As I believe you wanted, I've created a "sandbox" page for you at User:Mbandrews/Sandbox that contains the deleted material from the article about Maidenhead Astronomical Society. The problem is that there is nothing in the article/deleted material that tells us why the Society is notable. In order to be the subject of a Wikipedia article, the society has to be in some way special or unusual, or widely known -- it is not sufficient that the group simply exists. So, if the group has ever been the subject of a magazine article or a newspaper story, that would be the kind of information that the article would need to contain in order that it could remain; otherwise, as I know you've learned, the article gets deleted quickly. (I am sympathetic, believe me -- new articles on Wikipedia are subject to what is sometimes intense scrutiny, because hundreds and even thousands of pages are created daily that don't meet our standards or are actually libellous, or violate copyright, etc. So the volunteers who scrutinize new pages have to work quickly to sort things out, and it can be very daunting for new contributors.)

I recommend that you look at these two pages -- WP:Why was my article deleted? and WP:Your first article -- in order to get an idea of the type of standards to which new articles are held. You can work on improving your article in the sandbox page, where you have a few weeks of uninterrupted time before anyone will look at it. And again, if I can be of any assistance to you, just leave me a note. Just about anyone here will help you, if you ask them. At the top of this page, I'm going to leave a standard "welcome" message that will give you access to some useful basic information and tools, and I hope you find that useful too. If you need help, and I'm not around, just follow the instructions there for getting help and you will get help right away!! Accounting4Taste:talk 21:12, 20 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia! I noticed that you recently added a {{hangon}} template to an article, Maidenhead Astronomical Society. In order for an administrator to evaluate whether the article should be speedy deleted or not, we request that you provide reasoning, on the article's talk page, for why it should remain. Just wanted to drop you a line after the afd of Maidenhead astrological society was closed, to say that I hope you haven't been disheartened by this experience. There's probably a lot you can add to the field, and you should consider taking a look at WikiProject Astronomy orWikiProject Astronomical objects, who try to improve articles about astronomical subjects. Also, keep a look out for news about your society, and if the society gains significant coverage and satisfies WP:N, consider recreating the article. -Toon05 14:50, 28 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
