baseball stats
[edit]Hey, when you update the stats for baseball players, could you please update the date also so others will know when the stats were last updated. Spanneraol (talk) 19:21, 12 May 2012 (UTC)
- You are still updating baseball infobox stats without updating the date field. Could you please start putting the date so others know when it was last updated. Spanneraol (talk) 15:50, 6 July 2012 (UTC)
- Thank you for your contributions in updating statistics. I know it is tedious work, however it would be much more helpful if you would also update the date in the stats_year field in the infobox. AutomaticStrikeout (talk) 00:12, 14 July 2012 (UTC)
Im sorry but I am fairly new to wikipedia as of January 2012, and I dont think blocking is neccisary... I will do what you ask but I dont know how to put the dates on a seperate page...

ANI Discussion notification
[edit]Hello. This message is being sent to inform you that there is currently a discussion at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard regarding an issue with which you may have been involved. Thank you. AutomaticStrikeout (talk) 17:06, 27 July 2012 (UTC)
- This is your final warning. If you continue to introduce errors into biographical articles by changing numbers without introducing new citations to correct previous information or by changing numbers without updating dates, you will be temporarily blocked from editing. Nyttend (talk) 17:43, 27 July 2012 (UTC)
- There are still a number of these articles that haven't had the dates upgraded and I don't know if the previous numbers were wrong or if the date needs to be updated. Could you please fix the remaining ones like this? Shadowjams (talk) 23:34, 27 July 2012 (UTC)
{{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}}
, but you should read the guide to appealing blocks first. Nyttend (talk) 03:40, 3 August 2012 (UTC)
Well Im sorry for posting all of the right stats on your page. Also sorry for being new and reliable to wikipedia, your stats are out of date most of the time and need updating so well, thats what I do... I know I dont put a date everytime or at all but honestly I have no idea how to do it... Thanks for the block anyway. Mnap25 (talk) 04:15, 3 August 2012 (UTC) Also the talk pages in my opinion are very inneficient, mainly because new users have no idea how to use them and they are not very easy to figure out
- Well when you have messages, a "you have messages" think appears that is very hard to miss.. and you could always ask other editors for help. Anyways, the date field is right above the stat fields you were updating. Spanneraol (talk) 12:51, 3 August 2012 (UTC)
Updating the date
[edit]It's unfortunate that it had to reach the level of a block, and it's good to know that you apparently weren't trying to be stubborn. When updating the stats, which are often out-of-date as you say, you are using an interface that looks like this:
| statyear = July 29, 2012 | stat1label = Batting average | stat1value = .233 | stat2label = Home runs | stat2value = 150 | stat3label = Runs batted in | stat3value = 635
All you need to do to update the date is to change the date in the statyear field to the date for the previous day. The reason we use the previous day is that the statistics will likely be correct through that day, not the present day. If you wish to request that the block be lifted, feel free to do so. At any rate, your block was actually a short one, so you should be able to resume editing without more trouble quite soon. If you have any further questions, feel free to ask on your talk page. I will keep an eye on it and try to help if I can. Sorry for all the confusion and hopefully things will go better in the future. AutomaticStrikeout 16:25, 3 August 2012 (UTC)
How long does the block last, central time, United States?Mnap25 (talk) 17:00, 3 August 2012 (UTC)
- Looks like about 10:38 PM tonight. However, if you request an unblock and try to explain your position, you might be able to get it over earlier. AutomaticStrikeout 17:09, 3 August 2012 (UTC)
I guess I will just ride out my block, but anyway, do you live in the United States because being 5 hours ahead I dont see that being possible. Mainly because the block was put on me and 3:38 am your time.Mnap25 (talk) 17:17, 3 August 2012 (UTC)
- Actually, I live in the Eastern Time Zone. The block was not in my time, but in UTC, which I believe is in England or something like that. Times on Wikipedia are based on UTC. AutomaticStrikeout 17:32, 3 August 2012 (UTC)
Alright that makes sense, so as I can tell you probalbly like a little baseball? Who do you root for? Im a Texan and I have to hang by my Rangers and unfortunatly my atrocious Astros. Mnap25 (talk) 18:17, 3 August 2012 (UTC)
- Yes, I've noticed that you have been more active on the Rangers and Astros players' pages. I'm a Tigers fan, in fact my username is a jab at Ryan Raburn. AutomaticStrikeout 18:31, 3 August 2012 (UTC)
Of course, anyway, do you personally own either the Astros or Rangers pages because if you do, I would like to know how I could get a hold of a few of them, since they are my favorite. Also to save people the trouble of updating and overwatching the page because I usually update on every off day. Mnap25 (talk) 01:15, 4 August 2012 (UTC)
- Actually, nobody owns any of the articles. There is a policy regarding that. If you want to update the stats on a page or make edits to it, you don't need to get anyone's permission. If you want to put a page on your watchlist, you can click the star at the top of the page near the search window. AutomaticStrikeout 01:48, 4 August 2012 (UTC)
So what is the watchlist really for and what is all of its uses? Mnap25 (talk) 02:34, 4 August 2012 (UTC)
- The watchlist will help you keep track of changes to the articles that you have listed. It will show you the most recent change to each page on your watchlist, provided that change has come within the time frame selected (perhaps the last 3 days). AutomaticStrikeout 02:38, 4 August 2012 (UTC)
Alright thanks, what pages do you watch? And how could I get those achievements that you have on your profile? I dont understand those... Also what is that umpire commitee? Mnap25 (talk) 02:44, 4 August 2012 (UTC)
- I mainly watch pages I have created and umpire-related pages to try and prevent somebody from coming and posting a bunch of vandalism since they are mad at some umpire. The umpires task force was a mini-project I started up to try and improve the umpire related articles (a lot of them were/are in quite bad shape). As for the achievements, it takes time. It also takes practice. I'd encourage you to get experience in areas besides updating stats. And don't be afraid to ask when you're not sure what to do. AutomaticStrikeout 02:56, 4 August 2012 (UTC)
What are the other areas? Creating pages? Writing biographies? Mnap25 (talk) 02:59, 4 August 2012 (UTC)
- I would recommend gaining plenty of experience in working on existing articles before you try creating your own. Take a close look at how the articles are designed, how references are handled, things like that. It can seem very complex sometimes. I am going to post a welcoming template at the top of your talk page because it contains some helpful links. AutomaticStrikeout 03:08, 4 August 2012 (UTC)
- Hmmm, looks like somebody else already did. I'd recommend taking a look at some of that stuff. AutomaticStrikeout 03:09, 4 August 2012 (UTC)
Thank you very much for all of your help, but I think it might be time that I let you know that I am not even an adult, honestly not even very close, to be exact only 13 years old. Mnap25 (talk) 03:14, 4 August 2012 (UTC)
- I see. However, I don't think that means that you can't continue to update stats and learn more about how to become a good editor. You might want to take things slowly, learning a little here and there, and that's fine. There is plenty of work to do in updating stats and you can be a help in that regard. I would, however, recommend that you start naming your source in your edit summary when you are updating stats. I'll be happy to help you where I can. AutomaticStrikeout 03:23, 4 August 2012 (UTC)
Honestly at first I didnt understand what that meant but soon enough I did and thought it took to much time to get the source... Is what you mean copying the URL?Mnap25 (talk) 03:26, 4 August 2012 (UTC)
- Nope. Here's what my typical edit summary is for stats updates: Updated career statistics per Baseball-Reference.com. If you'd like, you are welcome to copy that (but change the website if you are using a different one, of course). By the way, what source do you use? AutomaticStrikeout 03:32, 4 August 2012 (UTC)
Haha wow, how ironic, thats the exact site I use 90% of the time. Other times its ESPN because I already have it open and I just use it because its convienent. And now officialy my blocking is over. Mnap25 (talk) 03:39, 4 August 2012 (UTC)
- Yes, it is. There are pages out there waiting to be updated. Go for it! AutomaticStrikeout 03:41, 4 August 2012 (UTC)
Do you have an email account that I could email you at to make talking A little less visible to everyone in this world? Mnap25 (talk) 03:52, 4 August 2012 (UTC)
- If I or you was to post our email here, everyone would see it. That would make you even more visible. I wouldn't worry too much about visibility, just don't give out a bunch of personal information. Yes, it was informative to learn that you were only 13, as that can explain if you have a hard time grasping some aspects of Wikipedia, but there's really not much else you need to say about yourself. As for other editors seeing this conversation, I wouldn't worry about it. AutomaticStrikeout 04:05, 4 August 2012 (UTC)
Honestly I think I can grasp the aspects of Wikipedia decently well just would take a little time and explaining from someone who knows what they are talking about, and you seem to be a person of trust. Is there any way you can send a personal message or something on wikipedia?Mnap25 (talk) 04:44, 4 August 2012 (UTC)
- You may find this hard to believe, but you've actually been editing on Wikipedia longer than I have. There is still plenty of stuff I don't understand, so there may be some questions I don't know the answer to. But I'll still try to help where I can. You can learn a lot about the aspects of Wikipedia just by reading through the pages linked above in the section headed "Welcome!" As for sending personal messages on Wikipedia, I'm afraid that won't work. AutomaticStrikeout 16:53, 4 August 2012 (UTC)
Ok so are you suggesting that I basically read almost every page that I have a decent amount of knowledge about and try to prove they are right? Or just eyeball the relative information? Mnap25 (talk) 23:42, 4 August 2012 (UTC)
- I'm saying that if you want to be a really good editor, you'll find those links I've mentioned helpful in learning about editing. They say that anyone can edit Wikipedia, but anyone will also make many mistakes if he or she doesn't understand the basics. AutomaticStrikeout 23:46, 4 August 2012 (UTC)
Ok thanksMnap25 (talk) 23:48, 4 August 2012 (UTC)
- No problem. By the way, another helpful place for answering questions is the Teahouse. They might be more helpful than me. AutomaticStrikeout 23:51, 4 August 2012 (UTC)
Something else that might help
[edit]Here's an essay about editing for younger users. I think you might find it very helpful and maybe also easier to understand than some of the other pages linked above (not that you couldn't look at those also). AutomaticStrikeout 19:38, 5 August 2012 (UTC)
So when I was trying to add something to a page it didnt add because I think I didnt put a reference. But the thing is, I dont know where to put the reference. Ive seen peoople put it next to their writing in parenthesis like things. Is that what you are supposed to do? Mnap25 (talk) 18:26, 6 August 2012 (UTC)
- I'm going to give you links to a couple of pages that explain about how to add references. Here is Wikipedia:Citing sources and Wikipedia:Inline citation. I think the second one might be more relevant to what you are looking for. Also, what article did you try to add the content to? AutomaticStrikeout 18:33, 6 August 2012 (UTC)
Geovany Soto, and Ryan Dempster. About their Rangers debut. Mnap25 (talk) 18:52, 6 August 2012 (UTC)
And could you send me a link or tell me how to change a picture on a page? Thanks. Mnap25 (talk) 18:53, 6 August 2012 (UTC)
- First of all, I think your edits to Ryan Dempster were slightly modified and the one to Soto was removed because it was determined that his debut was not worthy of a mention in the article. However, your edits did get made, and not having a reference won't prevent an edit from happening. It is, however, still good to use sources. As for the images, what articles did you have in mind? I'm not very experienced with images actually (it's confusing to me too) but I do know that you can't add just any image to an article. I don't really know how a lot of that works, but for the articles you are thinking of there may not be a better image available. AutomaticStrikeout 19:01, 6 August 2012 (UTC)
Well I am not trying to add one necissarily but change it. I get a little frustrated seeing the first picture not being of them in their current team, so I would be willing to try to find a good picture of them in their current teams uniform. Mnap25 (talk) 19:28, 6 August 2012 (UTC)
- The problem is that one of them in the current team's uniform may not be available. A picture has to meet certain requirements and I'm honestly not knowledgeable enough about that to explain it all to you. Maybe the best thing would be to ask at the Teahouse. Tell them your concern and try to find out what pictures can be used and what ones can't. You may have to wait a little bit for an answer, but you'll likely hear from someone who knows what he or she is talking about. AutomaticStrikeout 19:34, 6 August 2012 (UTC)
Ok thanks. Can you check a few of the Miami Marlins players to make sure that all of their stats that I updated stays like that? Mnap25 (talk) 19:44, 6 August 2012 (UTC)
- No problem. Looks to me like the updates have stayed so far. You can always check your contributions and check to make sure that your edit was the most recent one. If it was, it will say "(top)" next to the edit. Of course, just because someone edited the page after you doesn't mean they undid your edit. AutomaticStrikeout 19:47, 6 August 2012 (UTC)
A barnstar for you!

Season-ending stats
[edit]Hello there. I saw your recent edit to Justin Smoak. It may delight you to know that you don't need to put "through/Through" in the info box next to "statyear." The template fills that in for you. Cheers. Zepppep (talk) 16:47, 12 October 2012 (UTC)
- You can choose to "hide" posts to your talk page. You can essentially delete anything you want from your talk page (the text would still be visible should someone want to look at your talk page history, but that wouldn't be too common of a thing for fellow editors to care about). Check the talk page guidelines out here. I choose to let all comments, both positive and negative, remain on my talk page until an archive date comes around, but you may wish to remove comments that would be considered vandalism or comments where you might've divulged a bit more than you might have liked. Simply use the "edit" feature on your talk page. (Check out the link I provided). Zepppep (talk) 16:55, 12 October 2012 (UTC)
I am also tending to the Twins players you've edited, such as Josh Willingham. If you want to rework your edits ahead of me, feel free to! :)Tended to all 47 player articles, addressing other edit needs as well. Zepppep (talk) 05:42, 15 October 2012 (UTC)
Preview button
[edit]Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. In the future, it is recommended that you use the preview button before you save; this helps you find any errors you have made, reduces edit conflicts, and prevents clogging up recent changes and the page history. Thank you. It's a handy tool and will save you (and others) from more than your fair share of "oops" moments. Zepppep (talk) 07:37, 15 October 2012 (UTC)
