Hello, I'm Dengero. I wanted to let you know that I undid one or more of your recent contributions to Old Master Q because it didn't appear constructive. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thanks! Dengero (talk) 14:49, 12 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Gun lists

[edit]

Hi, Nhoctu. Thank you for working to improve Wikipedia. I note that you have been adding lists of guns to a number of media articles. One of those lists became the center of a dispute at Talk:Shanghai_(2010_film) and I've removed another for the same reasons from Lucky Luke. Other users have removed them for similar reasons from Old Master Q and Halloween II (2009 film). The first problem is that they're too much detail and not enough importance for the article and are prohibited by the undue weight policy (read the discussion at Talk:Shanghai_(2010_film) for a more complete explanation and some quotes). Most or all of the lists which you have added are going to be removed for that reason, but before you get involved in discussions about whether or not to keep them in the articles you need to know about a much more serious problem, however. It is the question of where you're getting these very specific identifications of weapons. All information in Wikipedia must be proven by a reliable source, but with media items the media items themselves can be such a source. Using something like that, however, as a source for itself is considered a primary source and the primary source policy says, very strictly, "Do not analyze, synthesize, interpret, or evaluate material found in a primary source yourself; instead, refer to reliable secondary sources that do so." If you are viewing these films yourself and identifying the guns, that's clearly a violation of that policy. So even if the list is not too detailed for the article, there still may be a very difficult problem to deal with under Wikipedia policy unless you can show that the guns are actually identified by name in the movie or comic book somehow or unless you can show that there is a reliable third party source that identifies them as being in that work.
