New to Wikipedia and almost immediately blocked

[edit]

Hi @Joe Roe: @Hut 8.5: I’m new to Wikipedia and have likely moved too quickly on creating a draft for the recently deleted SAFE Network which I had seen some interesting drama unfolding for. I joined to contribute to all free open-source software projects that relate to decentralization and P2P projects, as that is my major interest, made a few edits but was flummoxed by the fact that the SAFE Network page was taken down. I looked into edit history etc and saw that there were many sock puppet accounts being blocked but hadn’t suspected I would somehow be linked to them just because I was drafting up a new page. I’ve reached out to Yunshui about repealing my accounts recent block and am looking forward to a response but again am confused on how I’m getting mixed up in this so I thought it might be helpful to have more eyes on this odd behavior from any perspective. Hope that’s not an inappropriate or odd request. Thanks in advance. NickKoteskey 01:28, 2 January 2019 (UTC)}}[reply]

Request reason:

Greetings @Yunshui: my name is Nick Koteskey and yes I am brand new to Wikipedia. I just recently joined and am trying to learn the ropes around here. So far I’ve made a few minor edits to some tech pages and project pages that I understand and since I was aware of the SAFE Network page being taken down I decided to start working on a draft in my sandbox. I am also aware of the banning of sock puppet accounts that had originally published the SAFE Network page (resulting in the pages removal) and I can assure I am not a Sockpuppet but am a genuine new user who is trying to “be bold” as I’ve read in some of the tutorial material. Btw if it wasn’t for the user friendly Visual Editor, I don’t think I could possibly contribute anything to Wikipedia. If there is anything I can do to help answer any questions or reobtain the opportunity to collaborate and contribute, I would be extremely gracious. Could you also let me know what lead you to believe I’m a Sockpuppet?? I’m looking forward to hearing from you and hopefully resolve this block. Hoping to actually contribute. Decline reason:

Wikipedia is currently plagued with cryptocurrency promotions, and this looks like just another one (and in this case it's one that's not even past its alpha test stage). We also have a number of different accounts with a curious interest in the SAFE Network one, and it is not plausible that they are all completely individual and disinterested people. Request reason:

@Boing! said Zebedee: @Yunshui: @Fuelbottle: @Joe Roe: I see that you all have been included in previous discussions so hope you don’t mind the Ping. Responding to Boing!_said_Zebedee’s decline of my unblocking: That is understandable and I’m sure makes your folks job much harder but not so interested in just the SAFE Network to not want to be unblocked, which hasn’t been addressed. I’ve done nothing wrong from a new Wikipedia users perspective. I joined, read some tutorials, made minor edits to pages I knew I’d be helpful at, had knowledge and saw something missing so started drafting in my sandbox as a learning experience. My intent is completely honest and legitimate and now I’m Blocked because of others actions? Anyways. Hopefully this doesn’t end up making me seem biased but I am educated on the subejct as I had disclosed on my user page (which also also seems to have been edited?) about multiple projects, including the SAFE Network. Here’s the thing. Why is IPFS (Inter Planetary File System) which has a cryptocurrency ‘Filecoin’ (which is nothing but a cryptocurrency and has it’s own Wikipedia page!) and stores/decentralize’s data in a very similar way to the SAFE Network, allowed on Wikipedia for the average person to learn about? They are both cryptocurrency AND blockchain, which as I understand have special sanctions, and for good reason. Why is Freenet, which has a very technically in depth and mature page allowed and yet the SAFE Network which is in the same vein, also a FOSS (free and open-source software) and that picks up where Freenet left off, not allowed? The SAFE Network has been around since 2006 (before bitcoin and cryptocurrency) and has been spoken of on BBC Radio numerous times (https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0b2r9bg), in multiplle online publications (not just online blogs or crypto sites) such as TechCrunch (https://techcrunch.com/2018/06/02/not-just-another-decentralized-web-whitepaper/), and the Guardian (https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2018/feb/01/punk-rock-internet-diy-rebels-working-replace-tech-giants-snoopers-charter). It’s even been seen in pop culture recently such as HBO’s series Silicon Valley (https://spectrum.ieee.org/view-from-the-valley/telecom/internet/where-is-hbo-silicon-valleys-real-pied-piper-look-in-troon-scotland) and some of the Maidsafe crew including the founder David Irvine served as technical directors for the show and attended the Decentralized Web Summit 2018 where Mike Judge literally said “we looked into Maidsafe a lot for season 5 (https://twitter.com/JAMSplayer/status/1027179472976596996?s=20)”, then the SAFE Network logo appeared in this years Raulph Breaks The Internet at the turning point of the movie (https://discourse-cdn-sjc1.com/business5/uploads/safenetwork/efd5058c7d6ca12794b85f64c9d340ac201dccfc). The fact it is in Alpha is a bit of a cop out imo but I do understand the hesitation. Either way much of it’s technology is well proven and are adaptations of existing and successful open-source libraries but modified for privacy and security, which are arguably useful tools to know about not to mention it’s modest place in history. I know this stuff because I’m interested and in the trenches so to speak and I personally think I’m A valuable resource because of it. I also don’t see how a project that has been around so long and in current pop culture can be dismissed as not having genuine interest when it’s not your typical fly by night crypto scam/ICO/flavor of the week that participates in all the flashy crap most often do. This is about education on the tech and objective history. To deny that to Wikipedia readers is exactly against what Wikipedia is going for I thought? Again, thank you for the opportunity to make an appeal to this block and hopefully hearing an otherwise average guy in northern Michigan USA that loves tech, out. Looking forward to a response that address my concerns and getting this block resolved. NickKoteskey 16:29, 30 December 2018 (UTC)

Decline reason:

I am declining your unblock request because it does not address the reason for your block, or because it is inadequate for other reasons. To be unblocked, you must convince the reviewing administrator(s) that

  • the block is not necessary to prevent damage or disruption to Wikipedia, or
  • the block is no longer necessary because you
    1. understand what you have been blocked for,
    2. will not continue to cause damage or disruption, and
    3. will make useful contributions instead.

Please read the guide to appealing blocks for more information. -- Dlohcierekim (talk) 22:08, 30 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Request unblock

Request reason:

@Dlohcierekim: I know why I was blocked except the reason is untrue and wrong. I won’t admit to wrongdoing that I am not guilty of. I am not some alias, nor a sock puppet, nor a sock puppeteer. I am an honest person and was excited to join Wikipedia to contribute. That said, * I do understand the reason why I was blocked * I will not cause damage or disruptions * I will make useful contributions That has been my intent since joining. I apologize for any confusion. I thought I had read that mods or admins were supposed to answer questions related to blocking etc but I have not received any in any of my requests. This is disheartening and a bit degrading to tell the truth. The lack of explanation on my queries is also slightly concerning from my POV but I am but a mere noob here. Perhaps you all are too busy to consider fully someone else’s situation, which is likely your situation, you’re all just very busy modding. Just as an aside I was originally looking to request someone else create a page for the SAFE Network because of the situation but being new couldn’t figure it out. I’ll drop the SAFE Network effort myself but I stick by my points in my previous unblocking request and I hope not every person who approaches it will be treated as such, especially since it had been approved in the first place. This will likely be my last request and I genuinely hope you reconsider. Still no response! Unbelievable. NickKoteskey 04:53, 14 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Decline reason:

Procedural decline only. This unblock request has been open for more than two weeks but has not proven sufficiently convincing for any reviewing administrator to take action. You are welcome to request a new block review if you substantially reword your request. Yamla (talk) 12:17, 6 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
