Adoption

[edit]

Hey there, I would like to offer to adopt you. Just leave me a message here (or at my talk page) if you want to accept my offer. Have a nice day :-) So#Why review me! 14:56, 6 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! I would like to gratefully accept you offer of adoption. I am very green here; it took me a good few days to even realize I had a message. Thank you. paradoxes (talk) 01:08, 12 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
No problem, that's why I offered to help you after all :-)
First lesson then, something you can see on this page: If you use a new line (line break), the Wiki-software will just ignore it and it will be shown as above. To force a break, you have to either add a <br/>-HTML-tag to where you want the line break or hit the Return-key (or Enter-key) twice to start a new paragraph. When in discussion with other users, like on this talk page, you should indent your reply by adding a ":" in front of the reply (and in front of every new break you make within this reply) or if you reply to a reply, you add "::" (like I did in this case). You should try and edit your reply to reflect this :-)
Also, to see how much you know, let's see if you are able to change the userbox for adoption on your user page. Your goal is to replace it with {{adoptee|SoWhy}} to show all the Wiki-world how nice I am...that you are still learning. :-)
So much for know, I look forward to coaching you, please feel free to leave me a message any time on my talk page or send me an e-mail if you need anything. SoWhy review me! 08:20, 12 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
So far, so good. Is it better to talk to another user on their talk page or on your own (assuming that is where the conversation originated)?
Also, could you give me a rundown of things that are considered to be really bad form when using Wikipedia? I don't mean things that have malicious intent, but something that a user might do accidentally without realizing they have committed a foul. I don't want to step on anyone's toes! Thank you. paradoxes (talk) 14:39, 12 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hah, nice, almost correct with the indent! Best if you just remember this: Every time you reply, you use one ":" more than the person you reply to has used. So if I wrote the first thing, you use one ":", I will then use two ":" ("::") and you will use ":::" when you reply to my reply to your reply. And if you reply to yourself, like I just did with this reply, you use a ":" more than the last time, too. Sounds confusing? I guess so, but it's really simple. It's like using the TAB-key in a Word-Document, every time you do, it indents one more step. And as with Word, you have to stop sometime...so if the person you want to reply to already used ":::::::" for example, you can "de-indent" and just use ":". Hope I have not completely confused you now^^
Usage on talk pages depends on the user in question. I like to have it all at one space and I use the {{talkback}} template to notify people that I responded at my talk page instead of responding at theirs. I would advise you to do the same if you think you can do it. But first look if the user in question has not specified his wishes.
Don't be too afraid of screwing things up. Yes, you should be civil but apart from that, we all learn from mistakes. You cannot go and learn all policies now but I think you could just read up the basics at WP:5 and WP:SR which tell you the most important things to heed. If you have more specific questions or questions about those, please just ask :-)
On a side note, if you have some time, you might want to read WP:ES. The little text field above the "save page" button is quite useful to tell everyone what you changed on the article, thus allowing us to understand it more easily (you might be confused by others tho who are using abbreviations like "re" (like I do^^) - you can read those on WP:ESL if you get confused reading a page's history) . Have fun! SoWhy review me! 14:55, 12 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding adoption

[edit]

Are you still planning to be active on the English Wikipedia? If not or if I get no reply, I will have to end the adoption to be able to support new adoptees. Regards SoWhy 12:20, 30 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Survey

[edit]

Hi Paradoxes!

I have put together a survey for female editors of Wikipedia (and related projects) in order to explore, in greater detail, women's experiences and roles within the Wikimedia movement. It'd be wonderful if you could participate!

It's an independent survey, done by me, as a fellow volunteer Wikimedian. It is not being done on behalf of the Wikimedia Foundation. I hope you'll participate!

Just click this link to participate in this survey, via Google!

Any questions or concerns, feel free to email me or stop by my user talk page. Also, feel free to share this any other female Wikimedians you may know. It is in English, but any language Wikimedia participants are encouraged to participate. I appreciate your contributions - to the survey and to Wikipedia! Thank you!
