Unambiguous advertising. One small bit saying what it is, and a lot telling people how to get it. Sorry, but that's not what Wikipedia is for. This is an encyclopaedia, not a directory. You have to show that the subject is of note (see WP:CORP and/or WP:WEB and prove it with references (WP:RS. You cannot use your own site to show notability, nor any blogs, forums or wikis, or places like PRWire or AboutUs. If you can do this, contact a regular editor or admin and ask for an opinion. Sparlock

No, Sparlock is not a toy. It doesn't exist. It is a metafictional plot device in a cartoon. The article is ostensibly a commentary about the Watch Tower Society. To clarify, the only exposure the fictional character has had has been on web forums after unauthorised exposure of the character on youtube, and a subsequent meme that has not had coverage in reliable sources. Perhaps. But the DVD isn't about Sparlock. As far as the subject of the DVD goes, the fictional toy is nothing more than an ancillary plot device. The purported significance of the fictional toy itself is purely the result of an internet meme, and certainly unintended by the producers of the film.--Jeffro77 (talk) 08:08, 5 July 2012 (UTC)

Looked back through a month of my deletions (about 500) and didn't see it. If you post here while signed in, I can find it in your deleted contributions (assuming you were the author). Being well written doesn't come into speedy deletion. The main reasons I delete are advertising and/or lack of shown significance. That's by our definitions, by the way. Thanks. Sorry, I can't see notability. I can see a highly promotional piece about someone who is marketing some software (which has no references to show that that is notable either). Please read WP:SPAM about advertising, WP:NPOV about neutral point of view, WP:BIO about biographies (and if applicable, WP:AUTOBIO as well), and WP:RS about the reliable independent sources needed to prove any claims of notability. As it stood, the whole article looked as if it had come straight from a PR department or other advertising place. Peridon (talk) 10:01, 5 July 2012 (UTC)

Joke and Dagger

Have a look at http://www.spymuseumstore.org/10447.html and at the bibliography on the Spy vs Spy page. Apart from which, Joke and Dagger was the Department name used by Mad for these strips. They used to put a 'department name' at the top of regular features. I used to have a small collection of Mad books, which along with being a Goon Show fan could explain some things... Deletion of YouthTrade page

Hi I'm Brianna Aloisio a new user and I am really confused as to how to start a page on the nonprofit project I work for called YouthTrade. I tried starting a page but it was deleted because I did not go about it in the right way. I've read the guidelines and tutorials but still can't seem to understand and now I don't know if it's even letting me start and redo the YouthTrade page. Please help! Many thanks,

OK. First, please understand that not every organisation gets a page here. Then read WP:COI which is about conflict of interest (more clearly, it is about editing concerning you and yours - subjects you are closely involved with). Follow up with WP:RS which is about reliable independent sources. Without these, your article would stand no chance. These are needed to back up claims to notability - if no-one knows about the organisation, or no-one has bothered to discuss it or review it, then it's not time yet for an article here. A lot of people want to use Wikipedia as a springboard to launch their project and get it noticed, but that's not the way it works. When something is of note (by our standards), we'll record it. The work of getting it noticed is yours. RS does not include blogs, forums, press releases (including places like PRWire), Facebook etc, websites at blogspot or wordpress, or wikis (to mention just some of the no-go ones). When/if you think you can make it, create the new article (taking care not to promote and using neutral wording WP:NPOV) at User:Brianna Aloisio/DRAFT and then ask someone for advice. (Just click that red link and you'll have somewhere in your userspace to work.) It should be safe there from patrollers, except for attack, advertising or copyright violation (note that if something is published somewhere else, even if you wrote it, it can't be used here; brief quotes that are acknowledged are OK, but if wanting to use outside material look at WP:COPYVIO first. At the moment it's only a sketch - but some things need sorting. You should lose the TM things - we don't use them, or RM or anything similar. You need to look again at WP:RS - only the Boston one is any good for showing notability. The organisation's own site can't show notability, nor can anything titled 'our mission'. Don't rush things. Read other articles and look how they're built up. (If they look rubbishy, they probably are. Look for tidy ones without tags at the top complaining about problems.) Then, when you've worked out what's wrong with yours, come back and tell me. Or talk to User:MelanieN - she's friendly and helpful, and good at sorting problems. So you can prove the wealth and the marriage, then? Biographical material must be referenced, you know, and so must be autobiographical stuff (and autobio is not recommended anyway). Please sign posts with four ~ things (and don't start lines with spaces - it upsets the formatting). The text is not suitable for use here as it is promotional in tone and gives no references to support any claim of notability. Whether or not the text was first published here, it is not encyclopaedic. If it is, as it seems to me, claiming that IvanthegreatLaw originated hiphop, then references must be produced to prove this. Your own claim is not enough. OK on reverbnation or LinkedIn or Facebook, but not on Wikipedia. Newbie Question for Peridon

Whew! Please pardon me if I've formatted my question incorrectly - I'm new to the Wiki world.

Peridon: I created the recently deleted Enizagam (literary journal) article, and would like to rewrite it so that it isn't tagged as an advertisement. (I'm not affiliated with Enizagam; nor have I ever been.) I included blurbs about the school that publishes the journal - which is near my house - by respected authors including Robert Olen Butler. Is that why the article was deleted? Any tips that you can provide will be well-received!

It was deleted because it looked like an advert. Far too many glowing quotes from people. Made it look like a sales pitch. Secondly, the references - one was to blogspot which isn't reliable, and the other was to the magazine's website, which isn't independent. Look at WP:RS for info on what are considered reliable etc. (Not blogs, forums, wikis including us, own sites - all no good. Mentions (or no mentions) are not much use. Has to be something fairly solidly about the thing without sounding like a fading minor TV star endorsing soap powder, or a real estate agent trying to beat the termites.) I can't think of a policy for magazines, so look at WP:GNG. I will accept that you're not connected - which is a rare thing for someone as cynical as me. (It's amazing how many totally unconnected bystanders write perfect PR articles about products they, of course, have no connection with, except that they've used one...) You will have to show notability possibly more than for a commercial mag - because of the school involvement. School mags aren't usually notable. Not even the one I was first published in (or the non-literary one I edited for three years). If you can link to some writers that have articles here, all to the good - but not if they have just been interviewed. Has anyone notable been published in it? Has it been reviewed anywhere in reliable print or accessible and reliable online format? That's what you need. You call it "a national publication" - you should explain this and source it. Try again at User:Penlady19/MagDraft, but avoid anything spammy sounding - or even glowing. Neutral Point Of View WP:NPOV is needed. I'd keep the Daniel Handler quote - but you must source it. The mag site can be used as an external link, BTW, but it cannot show notability. I wish the staff and contributors luck - I always encourage young (and older) people to write or perform. (I do either at the drop of a hat or the prospect of a jingle of coins...) If I'm not around, ask User:MelanieN or User:Yopienso for advice. They're friendly, as are most of us when not being told how we should be running this place... (Not referring to you.) Peridon (talk) 20:15, 19 July 2012 (UTC)

Question I can't answer

Hi, Peridon! You referred to me the new user Brianna Aloisio and I have been helping her get her article into shape. (IMO there IS enough independent coverage that it will probably pass the notability test.) I am puzzled by something. The article isn't generating a Contents list, even though she now has properly formatted section titles. Then I noticed the same thing is true on her talk page. I wondered if she has something weird in her preference settings that prevents her material from generating a Contents list, but I couldn't find such an option under Preferences. Just learning Wikipedia - page deleted

Hello. I am the Membership Director for GPA and I was instructed to go on to Wikipedia and update the information about our company. We have recently (2010) changed our name from the American Association of Grant Professionals (AAGP) to the Grant Professionals Association (GPA). It looked like our page had not been updated since a few years ago, so I went on here and updated the page. I am not familiar with Wikipedia and do not understand why the page was deleted by you last night. We are an association that is based on a code of ethics. It was not intended to advertise our association. You deleted the page with the reason: (G11: Unambiguous advertising or promotion). Can you please explain as well as instruct me how to get my page back? We will be happy to edit the information to be read more like an encyclopedia and not a sales pitch. Again, we are truly sorry and respect your decision but are happy to comply and edit.

OK. Probably, you are not the best person to be doing this editing. Not an insult. We have a policy WP:COI about conflict of interest - editing about you and yours. It's not directly forbidden, but it is not recommended. I realise that when you refer to 'our page' that you probably mean 'the page about our company', but would remind you that pages are not 'owned' just in case. As to advertising, "If you are not already a member, we invite you to join us as we work to shape the future of our field" is one of the things that we call advertising here. The use of 'we' is a killer. A list of membership levels WITH THE FEES PAYABLE made things worse (just as bad as a price list...). Coupled with this is another problem. There is no indication whatever of the notability of the organisation (please see WP:CORP which applies to charities and non-profits as much as to multi-nationals). There were also no references in independent reliable sources WP:RS. So, your homework is to read our policies (including the obvious WP:SPAM and the less obvious WP:NPOV - neutral point of view, then to look for references outside your site(s) and connected profile hosts etc. I would recommend a change of name as well, as it appears to represent the organisation. The place for this is WP:CHU and scroll down to Simple. If you think you can meet the requirements, create a new article at User:GPAmember/DRAFT (create the page now and it will automatically change when the name change occurs). Then ask for advice. Almost any regular editor or admin will be willing to give an opinion. Over to you... Peridon (talk) 22:23, 24 July 2012 (UTC)
In other words, the article has to be written in a Completely neutral point of view, and must be encyclopedic (written as an encyclopedia article). What you wrote makes it sound like it was taken fresh off the website. Robby The Penguin (talk) (contribs) 22:35, 24 July 2012 (UTC)
