Neutral point of view

[edit]

It is a difficult line to walk because the WEF is controversial topic. But try to do the best you can to maintain an encyclopaedic tone. Most of what you have added has (just) stayed dispassionate but I had to revert your text on covid-19 because, by juxtaposing events, you invited the reader to assume bad faith. Please look at your text again in this light.

You may, and indeed should, report such inferences where they have been made by a wp: reliable source (so not a politician or shock jock).

Be careful of wp: soapbox: your edits taken cumulatively read like a political campaign rather than intended to give a neutral balanced perspective. --John Maynard Friedman (talk) 13:53, 20 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Citing sources

[edit]

You don't have to do this, but it will make your edits look more skilled if you do: give prettier references.

  • The simplest is one like this: <ref>[http://example.com/readallaboutit Read all about it!]</ref> produces a citation that displays as: Read all about it!. Not a lot better but some.
  • You can get into to full all singing all dancing version at wp:citing sources but for now I suggest you limit yourself to
    • {{cite web}} which is quite basic
    • {{cite news}} mainly for newspapers but used for TV news too.
    • {{cite book}} this one is worth the effort to learn but stop when you get to Harvard references, come back to them in a couple of years as I don't want to give you heart failure. It took me weeks to get the hang of it.
    • {{cite journal}} as it says on the tin.
    • {{cite press release}} ditto, bit warns readers to add many pinches of salt

Or you can just be lazy and let WP:REFILL do the work. The bot is quite good but can be goofy.--John Maynard Friedman (talk) 20:41, 24 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Many thanks for the helpful input. These points are good to know. --PeterAndBrian (talk) 07:53, 25 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
[edit]

Re your edit note to your last update to WEF, a few of points:

  • wp: Wikipedia is not censored but is subject to US law, which has almost no restrictions on what can be reported about legal cases.
  • You are personally responsible for what you write: you are not immune from prosecution by legal authorities where you live, if you break local law.
    • In the UK, for example, it is a criminal offence (Contempt of Court) to write prejudicial material about a criminal case once a suspect has been charged. So no names, for example. I am not a lawyer but I have never heard of s similar restriction on reports of civil cases (such as the WEF v The Times one you mentioned).
  • wp: Wikipedia is not a newspaper. It is generally inappropriate to write about ongoing cases. Wait until they have finished and then wait a while longer to report the analysis of a reliable source.

But after all that, your edit looks fine to me and indeed the section would be poorer without it. --John Maynard Friedman (talk) 08:11, 26 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for this - I will leave the edit as it is and will not add direct references/links to the three articles for the time being. --PeterAndBrian (talk) 08:40, 26 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Username

[edit]

Is this account operated by multiple people? — Jeraphine Gryphon (talk) 00:08, 30 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Some reading: Wikipedia:Username_policy#Usernames_implying_shared_use and Wikipedia:Changing username. — Jeraphine Gryphon (talk) 00:11, 30 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, the account is just operated by one person (myself). Why the specific question? --PeterAndBrian (talk) 07:40, 30 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
See the links I posted. Your username is against policy so you'll want to change it. And it's good that you just assured you're just one person since sharing accounts isn't allowed. — Jeraphine Gryphon (talk) 00:13, 1 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Your account has been blocked from editing Wikipedia because your username, PeterAndBrian, does not meet our username policy. Your username is the principal reason for the block. You are welcome to continue editing after you have selected a new username that meets the username policy guidelines, which are summarized below.
Per the username policy, a username should represent an individual and should not: represent a group or organization; be promotional; be misleading (such as indicating possession of special user rights or being a ”Bot" account (unless approved for such purposes)); be offensive or otherwise disruptive. However, a username that contains the name of a organization and also identifies you individually, such as "Sara Smith at XYZ Company", "Mark at WidgetsUSA", or “FoobarFan87" is allowed, though, among others, the guidance on conflict of interest and the policy of paid-contribution disclosure are relevant.
You are encouraged to choose a new account name that meets our policy guidelines and create the account yourself. Alternatively, if you wish for your existing contributions to carry over under a new name, then you may request a change in username by:
  1. Adding {{unblock-un|your new username here}} below. You should be able to do this even though you are blocked. If not, you may wish to contact the blocking administrator by clicking on "Email this user" from their talk page.
  2. At an administrator's discretion, you may be unblocked for 24 hours to file a change of name request.
  3. Please note that you may only request a name that is not already in use. Therefore, please check the list here to see if a name is taken prior to requesting a change of name.
Appeals: If, after reading the guide to appealing blocks you believe you were blocked in error, then you may appeal this block by adding {{unblock|Your reason here}} below this notice,. -- Amanda (aka DQ) 12:25, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
