Chinese culture perception of genetic mutations

Down syndrome is a genetic mutation which instead of having 23 chromosomes at the stage of meiosis, there is an additional chromosome, making a total of 449 chromsones, instead of the usual 46 chromosomes. Because of this genetic mutation, the child is likely to have doggy eyelids, have salivation issues and have intelligence problems. In Chinese culture which is basically a conformist culture, intelligence is very much appreciated and exorted as a virtue. Because this child has a lower IQ, the parents whenever they bring this child out will always lower their head down in shame. The mother would believe that she might be not doing the right thing during her pregnancy. So, she personally feel responsible for this abnormality. The father would feel that the son brings him shame because he is not able to glorify the family name. The Prime Minister of Singapore has a son who is born with albinism. Being the offspring of a Chinese gentleman, the family initially found it difficult to bring Loong’s son out in the open. Albinos usually are born with normal intelligence.But their retinas are red in colour.
