June 2018[edit]

Information icon Hello, I'm Longhair. I wanted to let you know that one or more of your recent contributions to User:Ruthers1959/sandbox have been undone because they appeared to be promotional. Advertising and using Wikipedia as a "soapbox" are against Wikipedia policy and not permitted; Wikipedia articles should be written objectively, using independent sources, and from a neutral perspective. Take a look at the welcome page to learn more about Wikipedia. Thank you. Longhair\talk 11:13, 8 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Longhair, I'm a novice here and based this page on the format of another musician (Roine Stolt) hoping that would be a good compliant start. I haven't finished and was just playing with ideas which will reference independent material. Can you please restore and give me a chance to finish? ruthers1959 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ruthers1959 (talkcontribs)
Hello. I'm happy to restore your content however you'll need to be aware of the information at WP:PROMO and also WP:COI which expressly forbid promotional editing and further, writing articles about yourself and issues relating to conflicts of interest. Please review this important information as ignoring the guidelines and policies explained will possibly lead to a block down the line. Hope this helps and welcome to Wikipedia. You may also wish to read over the information at WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS in relation to your comment regarding similar articles. If you have any further questions feel free to drop me a note. -- Longhair\talk 11:32, 8 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Longhair that would be great, I'll take a good look at that information. I was under the impression that my content hadn't published to WIKI - was i wrong? Navigating from the sandbox told me I hadn't saved and I couldn't find a save button so tried publish - I guess that pushed it live? Appreciate you help, ruthers1959 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ruthers1959 (talkcontribs)

Not published into the encylopedia as such, but still published at your own personal sandbox. Your information is restored at the link above. I understand I've just handed you quite a lot of information to digest but it's in your own interests to read up and play by the established rules because not every administrator is as understanding :D We deal with quite a lot of spam edits daily and while you may be a notable person that's another topic covered over at WP:NOTABILITY, but in short, writing the article yourself is viewed as a big no no. :D Hope this helps and again, welcome and enjoy your stay. -- Longhair\talk

Managing a conflict of interest[edit]

Information icon Hello, Ruthers1959. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a COI may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. We ask that you:

  • avoid editing or creating articles about yourself, your family, friends, company, organization or competitors;
  • propose changes on the talk pages of affected articles (see the {{request edit}} template);
  • disclose your COI when discussing affected articles (see WP:DISCLOSE);
  • avoid linking to your organization's website in other articles (see WP:SPAM);
  • do your best to comply with Wikipedia's content policies.

In addition, you must disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation (see WP:PAID).

Also please note that editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Thank you. Longhair\talk 11:32, 8 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
