Mermaids in Africa[edit]

Mermaids are creatures with the an upper body of a woman and a tail of a fish. They live in oceans, dams and rivers. Although mermaids are thought not to exist, a few of them have been seen in africa.

Sightings[edit]

Daniel Cupido and his friends reported having spotted the legendary "mermaid" known as the Kaaiman,in the Buffelsjag dam. It is white in colour and has long black hair and red eyes. [1] Some where reported by workers on th Gokwe and Osborn dam.[2]

Evil spirits[edit]

Mermaids are belived to be associated with evil spirits.many are believed to be used in witchcraft and some people worship them.They are said to be responisble for drowning,harrasing and abducting people who came close to the water points.They are said to sing to people and gods and enhand them ,distracting them from their work.They are also said to carry humans down to their underwater kingdoms. In Hans Christian Andersen’s 'The Little Mermaid', it is said that they forget that humans cannot breathe underwater, while others say they drown men out of spite [3].

Traditional healers appease mermaid[edit]

Traditional healers have brewed beer to rid the mermaids in the Zimbabwean dams that were scaring off workers in Zimbabwe.The workers on the Gokwe dam complaint of their machines breaking under mysterous circumstances,blaming the mermaids.[4]

Dead mermaid body found[edit]

A mysterous dead body of a mermaid is said to be found in Zimbabwe at Lake Mutirikwi (Kyle) Dam in Masvingo.[5].
