Self attribution on personnel sections

[edit]

I noticed that you have added your name to several music related articles as an A&R consultant. However, several sources have not indicated this information, which your actions are considered to be original research. Unless you are able to add another reliable source that lists your occupation, please refrain from adding any unsourced information about yourself. — Angryjoe1111 (talk) 07:55, 12 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I note that you've deleted my A&R credit on numerous pages. I will try to contain my frustration, and after 45 years in the music business it feels kind of weird trying to prove I am who I say I am, but here goes...I was Vice President Of A&R at Jive Records, NYC, from 1997 until 2005, after which I departed for Atlantic Records. From 1997 until mid-2002, Jive A&R personnel were not allowed A&R credit on album sleeves. Personal 'Thank you's" from the artists were the only way your name would appear, as mine did on almost every album I worked on. In my capacity at Jive Records I was the responsible A&R executive for the "pop" artists on the label...Britney Spears, the Backstreet Boys, *NSync, Justin Timberlake, Nick Carter, Aaron Carter etc.

As way of proof please see this article from the industry publication Hits Daily Double (scroll down to my name) https://hitsdailydouble.com/news&id=279178&title+WHEELS-&-DEALS:-COMINGS-&-GOINGS Also see this YouTube video of me with Britney in the studio https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cRxANtw4u0Q Lastly, you could review the artist "thank you's" on albums. Here's one from JC Chasez from *NSync's album, Celebrity http://incredible.nu/nsync/jc/jc-celeb.shtml and Justin Timberlake refers to me as "Uncle" Steve on various albums, and I'm credited as Compilation A&R on NSync's Greatest Hits https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greatest_Hits_(NSYNC_album) Unfortunately, I am not conversant with how to add references/sources etc to Wikipedia articles. It took me forever to learn just how to add my credit to a page. In fact I'm not entirely sure I'm even doing this response correctly, tbh. (Sblunt50 (talk) 15:45, 12 June 2020 (UTC))[reply]

I understand your frustration and never doubted that you were lying about your occupation. However, Wikipedia has guidelines that need to be maintained. In regards to your statement that Jive personnel never received credit on album liner notes, I have never come across an employee that has mentioned this before. The links you have provided also fail WP:ELNO and WP:CIRCULAR, as they from a fansite, a site that does not explicitly mention any specific credits, and a Wikipedia source which is not allowed. Generally, I would remove these claims if it was added by an anonymous account. With the claims you listed however, maybe try starting a discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Songs and Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Albums if you feel that no reliable source has acknowledged your contributions. Good luck. — Angryjoe1111 (talk) 18:28, 12 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
You are able to use this source as a citation for any of the titles listed, which would meet the guidelines. — Angryjoe1111 (talk) 18:38, 12 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I said Jive A&R personnel, not Jive personnel in general. That was a Clive Calder company policy that was only removed after he sold Jive on May 12, 2002. You will see that all albums after that do contain A&R credit. HITS Daily Double is not a fansite, it's a music industry publication. Regarding the JC Chasez mention, that is copied from the Celebrity album. I don't know of any "official" website that would list an artist's "thank you's", do you? I was A&R for the records cited, and this is getting a little tedious, tbh. May I respectfully ask you what your standing is in this matter, and why you're policing a perfectly legit credit in this way?{{Sblunt50 (talk) 18:53, 12 June 2020 (UTC)}}[reply]
I am aware of what you said and can differentiate between A&R and personnel. Like I said before, discuss this at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Songs and Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Albums, and be cautious of the three-revert rule and edit warring policies, which can constitute a ban if you re-add any information three times in a 24 hour period. Like what you said above, Wikipedia has guidelines which need to be enforced, which everyone needs to abide by, including myself. From the way you describe me as "policing a perfectly legit credit", the sources you added do not blatantly state which album/single it is credited from despite coming from a reputable source. Listen to my advice and seek discussion in the above two pages I listed before re-inserting your citations when it has concluded, and remain civil during discussions, otherwise this is considered tendentious and will lead you to ANI. Thank you. — Angryjoe1111 (talk) 19:09, 12 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

- I don't know what you're reading into my words, but I am being perfectly civil. I merely, respectfully, asked a simple question. Tbh, I have no idea what half the references you're referring to mean, but joining a chat group, or similar, to discuss Jive's policy on A&R credits etc, is not appealing to me. I think I'd rather just not bother with the credit all. It's rather ironic that an assistant engineer on one song can be credited, but not a legitimate executive creative contributor to the whole album. Who knew it was so hard to get a rightful credit on a Wiki page? I had no idea. Thank you.{{Sblunt50 (talk) 19:30, 12 June 2020 (UTC)}}[reply]
