Stub tags

[edit]

Hi. Regarding this edit of yours. Just letting you know that stub template tags should be transcluded.

Do not copy/paste the contents of the stub template itself into articles. In this case your edit included the addition the stub templates' respective categories to the article, causing miscategorization of the article and also causing the categories to be included this week's Wikipedia:Database reports/Template categories containing articles.

Instead, for a biology-related stub, add {{Biology-stub}} as explained at Template:Biology-stub and it will produce the same message and it will automatically add the article to Category:Biology stubs.

I have fixed the problem here, while also using the most specific stub template available, which is also best-practice. Thanks for your time and for all you do. Cheers! --DB1729talk 01:37, 7 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, ok, sorry. So I just memorize the syntax and add it?
Shadestar474 (talk) 01:49, 7 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
P.S, how do I find the most specific template? I knew that that was best practice, but I didn’t know how to find it.Shadestar474 (talk) 01:49, 7 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
So I just memorize the syntax and add it?
Once you've found the template you want to use, just follow the instructions on the template's page. Typically there will a Usage section where it says something like: "Typing {{...-stub}} produces the message shown at the beginning, and adds the article to the following category:" But yes, if you can just remember to wrap the name of the template in double curly brackets {{}} you will find that very useful, because in fact, that's the syntax for all templates.
how do I find the most specific template? I knew that that was best practice, but I didn’t know how to find it.
Generally how I do it is to start at Category:Stub message templates and click the relevant subcategory and keep narrowing it down until I get to a stub template that best suits the article, or until the tree doesn't get any more specific. However, in this case, I just so happened to click on the existing content category Category:EC 1.14.13 and it had the stub template category included as a subcat, which in turn had a link to Template:1.14.13-enzyme-stub. (Don't count on being able to find it through a content category like that very often though.)
Does this help? --DB1729talk 02:39, 7 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, thank you so much! I’ll try my best to do that next time. Shadestar474 (talk) 03:17, 7 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

Pronouns?

[edit]

Your signature seems to indicate that when I talk about you I should say "They dropped by to pick up the book, so I gave it to he". Am I missing a joke? TooManyFingers (he/him · talk) 01:24, 2 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Typically if someone uses multiple sets of pronouns, they write it as something like he/they or they/she instead of they/him. I’m not entirely sure why we do it that way, but no, “They dropped by to pick up the book, so I gave it to him” would be correct. Apologies for the confusion! Shadestar474 (they/he) (talk) 01:27, 2 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks ... Does it mean to use they/them or he/him, or to always use a plural subject but a singular object? I'm not trying to be obtuse, I just don't understand how it works. If you'd rather I just read about it somewhere, I'll do that. TooManyFingers (he/him · talk) 01:40, 2 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
It means that I tend to prefer they/them pronouns (since ‘they’ comes first), but you can feel free to use a few he/him pronouns if you want, as well. It’s no bother, by the way; it’s nice to know people care enough to learn this stuff, and I’m happy to talk about it. :) Shadestar474 (they/he) (talk) 01:42, 2 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! That's easy enough, it just proves that we haven't yet settled on a single consistent way of representing this thing. TooManyFingers (he/him · talk) 01:49, 2 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Exactly! Glad we’re on the same page. Thanks for asking, Shadestar474 (they/he) (talk) 01:50, 2 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]

+rollback

[edit]

Hi Shadestar474,

After reviewing your request, I have added your account to the rollback group. Keep in mind these things when using rollback:

  • Getting rollback is no more momentous than installing Twinkle.
  • Users should be informed (or warned) after their edits have been reverted. If warnings repeatedly don't help, WP:ANI is the default place to go. In cases of very clear ongoing intentional damage to the encyclopedia, WP:AIV can be used.
  • Reverting someone's edits may confuse or upset them. Whenever other users message you on your talk page, please take the time to respond to their concerns; accountability is important. For most users who message you, the tone and quality of your answer will permanently influence their opinion about Wikipedia in general.
  • Because the plain default rollback link does not provide any explanatory edit summary, it must not be used to revert good faith contributions, even if these contributions are disruptive. Take the time to write a proper summary whenever you're dealing with a lack of neutrality or verifiability; a short explanation like "[[WP:NPOV|not neutral]]" or "[[WP:INTREF|Please provide a citation]]" is helpful.
  • Rollback may never be used to edit war, which you'll notice to be surprisingly tempting in genuine content disputes. Please especially keep the three-revert rule in mind. If you see others edit warring, please file a report at WP:ANEW. The most helpful essay I've ever seen is WP:DISCFAIL; it is especially important for those who review content regularly.
  • If you encounter private information or threats of physical harm during your patrols, please quickly use Special:EmailUser/Oversight or Special:EmailUser/Emergency; ideally bookmark these pages now. See WP:OS and WP:EMERGENCY for details. If you're regularly patrolling recent changes, you will need both contacts sooner or later, and you'll be happy about the bookmarks.

To try rollback for the first time, you may like to make an edit to WP:Sandbox, and another one, and another one, and then revert the row with one click. I'm sure you'll do great with rollback, but feel free to leave me a message on my talk page if you run into trouble or have any questions about rollback. Thank you for your time and work in cleaning up Wikipedia. Happy editing!

Best regards,
~ ToBeFree (talk) 07:50, 11 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! I’ll be sure to keep all of that in mind.

Hello, @~2026-35101-6! The reason I reverted your edits was because it did not have a citation to a source. The rule on Wikipedia in pretty much all cases is that you need a citation for whatever you’re saying, to ensure that what you’re saying is the definitive, empirical truth. I appreciate you taking the time to ask your question, though! A lot of new editors don’t.
(Also, as a tip, you’re generally supposed to place your new comment at the bottom of a talk page to preserve the chronological order. I’ve fixed it, but it’d be handy if you could do that from now on; you just have to click ‘New section’. Thank you!)

Its fine. Its not the first nor likely to be the last of someone doing this exact same thing. Admittedly, it isn't quite a rule; its an understanding I have developed from Wikipedia:Perennial proposals#Use a bot to welcome new users. If the community wanted to provide welcomes to every new user, a bot would be the best way to go about it, not people with anti vandalism scripts. The fact that we don't have a bot to do that shows that there is consensus against having a bot to do that. 45dogs (they/them) (talk page) (contributions) 07:23, 20 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
