Books
[edit]No need to discuss this by email. I simply do not see what your problem is. I have restored User:Swamixyz/Books/Astronomy. "User:Swamixyz/Books/Astronomy" is the page name it is simply a location for the instructions about the page. You could move it anywhere else and it would not change the book contents. The book title is defined by the == heading within the page. More details at {{saved book}}. So what don't you understand? — RHaworth (talk · contribs) 19:24, 23 October 2014 (UTC)
- Hello again RHaworth, You have asked what I don't understand. You have somewhat indirectly answered some of my questions above. However, please read the following and I suspect you will better understand the part(s) that I'm unclear on. a) Under "Create a book", "Start Book Creator", "Show book" you arrive at the page "Manage your book". This page allows you to title and subtitle your book, download it, save it, or send it to a printer. On the same page, lower right, is a box titled "Save and share your book" which includes an entry field titled "Choose a storage location for your book". Directly below this command, on my Manage your book page are 2 little dots, one of which you must click on/choose or the "Save" button remains greyed out. Question: What specifically do I type into the box labeled "Choose a storage location for your book"? | I tried a few different word combinations, which then activates the Save button and appends those words to User:Swamixyz on my user page. Eventually, I discovered that each time I had saved it added another page name. You and others have helped delete the 6 unwanted page links from a total of 7. | b) The book title and subtitle failed to appear anywhere on all 7 "saves". | c) Is it possible to have only your book name follow User:Swamixyz without the prefix /Books? This is what I was originally trying to accomplish. OR Due to my lack of understanding of the Wiki hierarchy, am I constrained to saving books under User:Swamixyz/Books? I hope this clearly explains what I'm not understanding about saving and naming your book. You stated that you restored User:Swamixyz/Books/Astronomy. Since that was my subject, that's probably OK if I could find it anywhere!!?? My user page only reflects the link User:Swamixyz/Books. Finally, you also state "The book title is defined by the == heading within the page". I have no idea what that means. I also read the page Template:Saved book as you suggested. It contains a lot of nice programming info but certainly did not answer my questions. Thank you for your patience, I'm a newbie with Book Creator and have really tried to figure this out myself using all different types of "Help" pages. PS: How do I get my whole para to indent? The Indent help page tells you to use 1 colon for the 1st level response. What's the trick I'm missing here? — Swamixyz (talk) 22:01, 24 October 2014 (UTC)
Replies:
- "Chose a storage location". Those "two little dots" are not dots but radio buttons. Yes, there is a distinct bug - the "Save book" button stays greyed. The trick on this one is to click on the other button and back on the one you want!
- Once you have created a book you can move it but this could cause problems because Book Creator is still going to insist on one or other of its two standard name prefixes.
- "If I could find it anywhere!!??". What on earth are you talking about? Did I not give you a link to the page? It could be on your user page but you would have to put it there. Because I restored your edits, you could find the page via your contributions history. And even if I had not restored your edits, you could find it via the list of your subpages.
- "The == heading within the page". Your book definition can also be edited the same as any Wikipedia page thus. Look at the wikitext. Do you see == twice? Do you understand now?
- "What's the trick I'm missing" - don't put the colon between " !
Anything else that I have not covered? — RHaworth (talk · contribs) 17:57, 25 October 2014 (UTC)
Book Creator function
[edit]I'd be grateful if you could either a) answer my questions, or b) point me in the right direction to get help. The Teahouse is probably not the most appropriate area to pose these questions. Ever since I discovered the Create a Book feature I've had a lot of problems with it.
- How do you delete a book page that has no content? I made a mistake and then it creates another page with the mistaken title. But how do you completely clear the empty book user page?
- Is it possible to see all your unfinished books listed somewhere?
- If you have several books in process, how do you look them up? I don't see a way to locate your books.
- Is it possible to preview the book before downloading or printing?
- Are you able to format the text of your book (font etc.)?
- Can you access another users main page by typing User:xxx somewhere? Where would you type in a user's name?
Thanks much, Bill Swamixyz (talk) 01:07, 27 March 2015 (UTC)

[edit]1. To delete any page in your userspace, add {{db-user}}
to the top of the page and wait. Deletion is done by an human being but should happen within a few hours.
2 & 3. These questions make me very sad. I asked you but yesterday: do you know how to read your own contributions history or use Special:PrefixIndex/? When you have found your contribs history you will find PrefIndex at the "Subpages" link at the bottom of it. Please let me know that you have found both.
4. Why do you need to preview? Do you have a slow internet connection? In book manager I see a button labelled "Preview with PediaPress".
5 & 6. You have already had adequate answers to these two at the help desk.

[edit]Thank you for addressing my issues so promptly, or should I be saying "ouch" from that little spanking:) I understand you guys are tired of answering newbie questions but it's difficult to know where to begin because Wikipedia's Help/FAQ is so comprehensive and cross-referenced. Anyway, on to business: Re: My items 2 & 3. You said to let you know when I have found my contributions history and PrefixIndex. OK, found contributions history, clicked "Subpages" at the bottom and was brought to a page titled "All pages with prefix". At the bottom my saved books were listed. OK,so that's what you must go through to see a list of your books? Am I following you? I assume you also use this page to input various other directory paths you may be searching for? You also find yourself at "All pages with prefix" if you click PrefixIndex (or Special:PrefixIndex) on the page Wikipedia Talk. Re: My item 4. I don't really need to preview, I thought it would be nice to see how your book looks. No, I do not have a slow internet connection. Yes, you are correct, there is a button labeled "Preview with PediaPress. It is grayed out so I must have overlooked it. Things I still do not understand: a. When I clicked "View History" on my user page,it produced one page with only 2 of last years revisions reflected.(which is incorrect) b. While reviewing all my open tabs, every page reflects -0- pages under "Book Creator"/"Show Book" while I'm logged in and have Book Creator enabled. Normally, that box shows the number of articles you have in your book. Actually, there are 2 books saved with articles in them and they show up on the "All pages with prefix" page. Why would this be? I had a total of 4 books. Two of them were deleted per my request and the remaining 2 are still saved. I think you may have a bug in this system. It was not correctly reading and reporting the number of pages saved. When will the deleted pages be removed from my page? c. Finally, when I click "Talk" from my user page or the page "Help Desk Revision history", you go straight to the Teahouse. Is that how that's supposed to work now? Apologize for the length, thanks Roger! Swamixyz (talk) 00:28, 29 March 2015 (UTC)

[edit]a) You claim to have found your contributions history but this question makes me doubt it. Are you confusing your contributions history with the edit history of your user page. I assure you that for the latter you have made just two edits. What other edits do you think you have done to it?
b) I don't really know enough about book creator to answer the first part of your question. The second part is almost as confusing. You have two books - "all pages with prefix" shows two books - what is the problem?
c) I simply cannot reproduce these alleged problems.
Do you know of Wikipedian meetups where you live? You could probably benefit greatly from sitting down with an experienced editor. — RHaworth (talk · contribs) 19:15, 30 March 2015 (UTC)
