Cochrane results at Type 1 diabetes[edit]

Hi there Physiolosopher and welcome to Wikipedia! I'm sorry to come with bad news, but I've reverted your addition of the blurb on the results of this 2012 Cochrane systematic review to the Management section of Type 1 diabetes. I explained my reasoning in the edit summary, but I'll repeat briefly here that for the fast-changing field of medicine (and especially faster-changing subfield like medical devices!) we try to use the most recent reviews possible, as these will most accurately reflect the current medical mainstream. Many medicine editors here use a rule-of-thumb: try to find reviews from within the last five years. That guideline is enshrined at WP:MEDDATE, part of the page Wikipedia:Identifying reliable sources (medicine) (again, not some deep law written in stone -- exceptions occur -- just a guideline to help editors find reliable sources). Time flies, and that review is already ten years old. The other sources in the section are much more recent and will doubtless already be taking the Cochrane source into account to shape their recommendations.

On a related note, a peek at your editing history suggests your edits consist exclusively of adding blurbs on Cochrane reviews to articles. Do you work for or have some relationship with Cochrane? This is an open project and we invite contributions from anyone willing and able to help. However, the expectation here is that editors will disclose if they have a relationship to the topic they're writing about. That transparency helps other editors to more clearly assess your work, and helps to build trust among the editors. More on the community's expectation for editors who edit on topics they have some relationship to is at Wikipedia:Conflict of interest.

All that said, I hope this early bit of friction won't dissuade you from continuing to contribute. Wikipedia is an enormous project, and we truly need all the help we can get. If you have any questions or concerns, you're more than welcome to ask here, at WT:MED (where you'll find most of your fellow medicine-interested editors!), or WP:TEAHOUSE (where experienced editors hang around to answer questions from newer users). Hi Ajpolino.
Thank you for you reply and for reviewing my contributions. I need to properly update my profile but I've no issue disclosing that I am a volunteer for the Cochrane Campbell global ageing partnership and editor on the CCGAP wikipedia project. The reason I've mainly been adding conclusions from Cochrane reviews is because the aim of the CCGAP wikipedia project is to add the following list of reviews to the relevant Wikipedia pages to improve the quality of health-related information people have access to: Wikipedia:WikiProject Medicine/Cochrane/Cochrane Review List
I do agree that some of the reviews may be outdated and have highlighted this with the project leads. I will focus on only adding the reviews that were published in the last 5 years.
Don't worry, I haven't been dissuaded as I understand the need for critical appraisal of information, particularly in an easily accessible page such as Wikipedia. Misinformation can have severe consequences. It makes me happy that my contributions haven't gone unnoticed.
Please do let me know if there is anything else I can do to improve my contributions.

WikiProject Medicine[edit]

A WP:WikiProject is a group of editors who like to work together on articles. If you're interested in improving health-related articles, you're welcome to join us at Wikipedia:WikiProject Medicine. It's a good place to ask questions or to help each other out.

You're also welcome to join the informal, low-key contest about adding citations to articles: https://outreachdashboard.wmflabs.org/courses/Wikipedia/WikiProject_Medicine_reference_campaign_2023?enroll=qyoufwds (All you have to do is sign up at that link, and then edit normally. Everything else is automated.) WhatamIdoing (talk) 20:05, 15 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
