File Copyright problem
File Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading File:Heinrich Göring.jpg. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status and its source. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously.

If you did not create this work entirely yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the page from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of the website's terms of use of its content. If the original copyright holder is a party unaffiliated with the website, that author should also be credited. You will also need to state under what licensing terms it was released. Please refer to the image use policy to learn what files you can or cannot upload on Wikipedia. The page on copyright tags may help you to find the correct tag to use for your file.

Please add this information by editing the image description page. If the necessary information is not added within the next days, the image will be deleted. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem.

Please also check any other files you may have uploaded to make sure they are correctly tagged. Here is a list of your uploads. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Mayur (talkEmail) 06:41, 24 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your counsel, mayur. The photograph that I had used here was originally found on German Wikipedia, and it is still there. I downloaded and then uploaded a "new" copy because I sought to improve the resolution of the one used on German Wikipedia. I am now using the precise version of this jpg that is used on German Wikipedia. I cite that location as the source for the photograph. Another reason why I uploaded a copy of the photo was because it was possible that the photograph might be deleted at German Wikipedia; I hoped that by copying the photo here that copy would at least be preserved.

In any event, I have changed the copyright information on the photo.99.54.8.11 (talk) 15:14, 24 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Unexplained deletion of public domain photographs

[edit]

This issue has occurred in three different Wikipedia articles, originating with behavior from the same Wikipedia editor (Alpha Quadrant) each time.

Okahandja Concentration Camp

[edit]

On 03:28, 9 November 2011‎ Alpha Quadrant removed a photograph of the cover of the 1918 British Blue Book, which is in the public domain. (The visual used in this article was contributed by myself. In addition to the photograph being in the public domain, it is my own photograph, from my own copy of the Blue Book.) The rationale for the removal was: (All non-free files used on this page must have a valid and specific rationale for use on this page; please see Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline for more information; one or more files removed due to missing rationale FAQ) Any discussion concerning the Blue Book in this or any other article should be restored, as should this photograph. Citations have been provided.

In addition to the deletion of the link to the Blue Book cover, links to the following photographs, all of which are in the public domain (and so marked), have also been removed:

Erichsen Abused San or Nama child prisoners p. 52.jpg
Erichsen p.59.jpg
Erichsen slave labour p. 83.jpg
Erichsen p.150 (left).jpg
Zimmerer+Zeller Genocide in GSWA p.186.jpg

In addition to the above photographs, the link to the photograph Erichsen Okahandja p. 48.jpg has been removed and the photograph also appears to have been deleted from Wikipedia without notice to me.

Summary

[edit]

Such extensive removal of public domain photographs, as well as my own personally-donated photograph, shows either gross negligence or a highly biased intent. If these edits were made in good faith, they should immediately be undone; else, it would begin to look as if the edits were actually an act of vandalism. (SeeWikipedia:Vandalism: Vandalism is any addition, removal, or change of content in a deliberate attempt to compromise the integrity of Wikipedia.)

Alpha Quadrant, please comment.Virago250 (talk) 05:40, 27 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The images I removed were all tagged as non-free. Per the Non-free content criteria #10c, all non-free images must have a specific fair use rationale for every use of the image. At the time of the removal, the images were tagged with non-free license tags. If the images are indeed in public domain, then they were tagged incorrectly. I do correct obvious incorrectly licensed images. The images I removed were not obvious cases. The actions I took are not vandalism, nor any of the other claims you made. All I did was remove several images tagged as non-free from several articles, as they lacked fair use rationale. You are welcome to have the images restored and correct the issues. If you need any assistance, I would be happy to help. Best wishes, Alpha_Quadrant (talk) 17:54, 28 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
My suggestion would be that if the images are indeed in the public domain, you should upload them to Wikipedia Commons instead of here. Beyond My Ken (talk) 04:46, 30 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Non-free rationale for File:Sarkin p. 225.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Sarkin p. 225.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Welcome to Wikipedia. While everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia, a number of your recent file uploads, such as File:Zimmerer+Zeller Genocide in GSWA p.137.jpg, had missing or false information regarding their source and copyright status. Please note that Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. Images and other media must only be uploaded if their copyright status meets the conditions stated in our image use policy, and if their provenance is clearly documented. If you have questions, feel free to ask at the copyright question page or on my talk page. Thank you. Eeekster (talk) 23:20, 15 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Your request for arbitration

Eg File:Zimmerer+Zeller Genocide in GSWA p.186.jpg. I am concerned that while the image itself may be out of copyright, the accompanying text is recent and therefore in copyright and at the very least needs acknowledgment. GraemeLeggett (talk) 14:23, 17 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I'm away for the weekend, but will resubmit the visual without the accompanying caption when I return. (If you have the software resources and want faster response, I would not be at all offended if you removed the caption on the .jpg and resubmitted it.) Best regards,Virago250 (talk) 17:39, 17 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Done! In fact, while I was at it I improved the contrast of this visual. Thanks again, Virago250 (talk) 06:31, 25 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Nomination of German Ost (East) for deletion

[edit]

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article German Ost (East) is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/German Ost (East) until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on good quality evidence, and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion template from the top of the article. Sparthorse (talk) 16:51, 8 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The article Synchronic/diasynchronic view has been proposed for deletion. The proposed-deletion notice added to the article should explain why.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.
