User talk:Visviva/Archive4
thought you should know, i removed the current news section from the portal, because nobody was maintaining it. please feel free to restore it, or perhaps integrate wikinews content, if possible? thanks. Appleby 19:02, 22 June 2006 (UTC)
- welcome back :-) your expertise in the ways of wikipedia were sorely missed. for example, i'm not sure how to effectively maintain the nominations at Portal talk:Korea. similar problem at the discussion board, where the comments are not chronological. i noticed there used to be a system of archiving by sections, but seems too obscure, labor intensive & unlikely to be continued by others. the alternative would be to simply delete old comments, since they're available in the page history, but that seems rather too crude. any suggestions for a quick & effective way to keep the talk pages clean, in a way that any half-interested idiot like me can continue the maintenance without such a steep learning curve? thanks.Appleby 23:04, 20 July 2006 (UTC)
- V: I also noticed that you were back. Hopefully, you will stay for a while ;) Tortfeasor 22:13, 23 July 2006 (UTC)
Hangul pronunciation
[edit]Hello Visviva, do you think something like the tables located here is useful anywhere on Wikipedia at all? I sort of typed up the table in my textbook (which originally wrote all the pronunciations in IPA instead of Hangul) for fun, but then it is not apparent to me that it belongs to any article at all. Besides, no one ever looks at a table like this to learn Korean pronunciation. -- KittySaturn 17:29, 24 July 2006 (UTC)
Hwang Sok Yong
[edit]Being in Germany for a short time, I noticed an article in Der Speigel about Korea and the Frankfurt book fair, which included a 2-page discussion of hwang sok yong. I don't know any-thing else about him and don't even know whehter he is H S-y or Y H-s. The article (Der Spiegel 42/2005, pp. 165-166 is "Der Ueberlebenskuenstler" by Rainer Traub. It says he is 61, "gehoert zu den herausragenden Vertretern der Literatur seines landes." It says he was arrested for his particpation in a NK artists' meeting in Pjeongyang. He spent five years in prison. Works include "Der ferne Garten" "Die Geschchte des herrn Han" and his 1985 novel "Der Schatten der Waffen" about the Vietnam War, where he served starting in 1966. Traub writes that the book "verursachten im damaligen Suedkorea - de facto ein Protektorat der USA - ein Schock." (The book sent a shock-wave through ROK). Since the author was at that time already a major figure in Korean literature, this was especiallz strong ("tief"). His ten-volume "Chang Kilsan" saga, completed in 1984, made him very popular (sales of 4.5 million books).
Maybe You or some-one else can go from here. (I don't have time now). Kdammers 13:43, 26 July 2006 (UTC)
Hello again... about administrative divisions...
[edit]Hello again Visviva... I have this user called "Circeus" who wants to make the South Korea and North Korea templates look the same as those of other countries' (a huge number of which he changed to make them consistent, I would like to add). This was his edit [1] (compare previous version [2]). I changed it back after a while, seeing that makes it inconsistent with all the other administrative division templates that you seem to have created, not to mention the mistakes he inserted. However, now this user offers to help "making sure anotehr range of template is made consistent,if youpoint me to them", which I am a bit reluctant to let happen. Do you think it's a good idea to have him change all the Korea templates to the style he wants? In particular, he reversed the order of the divison names. I posted about it a while ago on the notice board when he first made the change, but I didn't get any response. -- KittySaturn 02:40, 29 July 2006 (UTC)
Question
[edit]Visviva: If you have time I would appreciate your input on a question I have. I was thinking of combining all of the UNESCO desiganated "things" in Korea into one template. Right now the South Korean World Heritage Sites are on a single template. I made a second template for the tentative World Heritage Sites as well [3]. I was thinking that by combing all of these UNESCO deignated thing would be a good way for readers to be able to better access the more obscure UNESCO designated things like Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangibles (Jongmyo Jeryeak for example) and the Memory of the World designess (like Hangul). Also, then it could have a North Korea section for the Goguryeo sites in DPRK/PRC.
So I guess it would look like the Alcohol template [4] with these topics: ROK World Heritage (list), DPRK World Heritage (list), Tentative World Heritage (list), Masterpieces of Oral and etc. (list), and Memory of the World (list). Thanks! Tortfeasor 09:01, 2 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit]Hey Visvia! Thanks for the notice.
Here are the new images I had uploaded. These I presume are GFDL because they are from amateur photographers without any copyright, and are posted either in forum www.skyscrapercity.com or website www.cityglance.org. Is there anything wrong with them still?

Giving your opinion
[edit]If you are interested, perhaps you can give the Korean side of how Koreans generally view Tsushima in correspondace to their Korean naming conventions to how Koreans refer to Tsushima--then and now, which I have difficulty in explaining to my stance why content of Korean naming conventions section should not be removed (see Tsushima Island's history. After Ypacaraí removed the Korean naming conventions section on the article, I have managed to engage with Endroit to probe into the reasons.
However, the discussion has alrady come to a standstill, before the discussion could even end, the status of the application of the policies and guidelines are being doubted by me, and ignored by Endroit about my questions, and labelled a troll when I used sources which Endroit find offensive, the objective of which is to prove my point (I have no intent of offending anyone, though). Thus I personally find the consensus unfair and a discriminating power if we can't even settle the way if policies and guidelines are applied--he has yet to claify a few more questions on applications of policies and guidelines. Having arrived to this stage, I approach to you for a wider audience in order to allow me to decide better.
Anyway, do feel free to check out at Talk:Tsushima Island, especially at the latest messages, and User Talk:Endroit has been rejecting my requests to hear his replies, evidenced from him removing my request messages I have posted at his talk page. I hope that your help could truly work out to a feasible resolution soon. Since July, I have been digging for reasons extensively to arrive at a resolution, with a bit of help previously derived from Deiaemeth. Cheers! Mr Tan 13:14, 20 August 2006 (UTC)

Rhododendron
[edit]Hi Visviva - "leaving natl symbols for now, but presumably it is only *one* species that is a natl symbol, not all of them" - I'd not be at all sure on that; the countries involved have a high diversity of Rhododendron species, and it may well be the genus as a whole that is designated. It would need to be checked with the relevant government websites. Not sure it was a good idea to create a Cat:Rhododendron, it will presumably be needed eventually, but for the moment, Cat:Ericaceae is far from full (only 90-odd articles; cats can hold 200 before getting crowded), and keeping them together in one cat makes checking 'recent changes' for vandalism etc a lot easier. - MPF 15:17, 16 September 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for that. What's gamju? I suppose I should make a page for that and add it to Korean wine? Badagnani 03:26, 5 October 2006 (UTC)
Oh, I see we've already got it mentioned in there. I added more on ihwaju which is supposed to be a thicker, traditional variety of makeolli, and also yuju which is made from horse milk. The new sources I've added mention more of the innumerable variations of Korean wines. It could take forever to document these things properly. The next thing is to get the wine "families" listed correctly in the Korean wine article. Badagnani 03:42, 5 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit]Hello, I'm not sure where to leave messages. Anyway, thanks for the tips you sent me! I'm still getting used to making pages on Wikipedia, so I've just been trying to imitate the styles I've seen elsewhere. Thanks for cleaning up some of the pages. And yes, I live in Gangjin. Galbijim
[edit]I notice we're active in a lot of the same areas. I also write and edit articles on www.galbijim.com It's a wiki site about living/working in South Korea. Their first goal is 10,000 articles, and right now they've got about 5,200. If you've got any free time, c'mon over and lend a hand! They're interested in all areas of living/working, but they also want information regarding tourist sites and living in smaller, less well-known parts of the country. Right now, too, a lot of time is spent backfilling, trying to add information to fix the "red links." So, come check it out! Thanks SolitaryThrush 14:36, 7 October 2006 (UTC)

Thanks
[edit]Thank you for the welcome. I see you almost single-handedly created the articles on Three Kingdom kings. That must have been a lot of work! By the way, what sources did you use? I'm using mostly the Empas "KoreanDB" and some Daum Encyclopedia. One confusing thing is the "Go" or "Hae" family name that's sometimes mentioned and sometimes not. It's not clear when the family name is recorded and when it's presumed. I'm also not really sure of the distinction between "personal name" "birth name" and "a-myeong". For example, Dongcheon has both a personal name (Uwigeo/Wigung) and an "a-myeong" (Gyoche). Any ideas?
I just read a comment on the Dongmyeongseong article discussion, saying Dongmyeongseong is the "posthumous name" not the "temple name". I think he might be right, so all of these tables need to be fixed. Do you know how?
Template experimentation tip
[edit]I noticed that you were experimenting with the Koreanname template. Since a change to this template affects hundreds or thousands of articles, I wanted you to be aware of the Template:Template_sandbox. There are several sandboxes available. You can try things and even test them on a real article (most easily in another window or tab) by using the preview feature. This gives you a chance to try things and only post the change when you know it will work. Canadiana 14:58, 11 October 2006 (UTC)
Need help
[edit]Hi, there's been some problem in creating a nice Chinese template comparable to the Koreanname one. Could you help to add the possibility of an image in the Chinesename one? I'd be eternally grateful. Badagnani 08:51, 16 October 2006 (UTC)
OK, I've figured out how to add an image. Now I want to do two more things: add the possibility of a photo caption (in small black letters, like the taxobox -- in fact, I don't think the Koreanname template allows for this either). Also, I'd like to make the hanzi in little boxes the way the hangul and hanja are in the Korean box. But it's so complicated! Badagnani 09:55, 16 October 2006 (UTC)
OK, I've figured out the grid and the image caption. Badagnani 10:20, 16 October 2006 (UTC)
All right, I've figured everything out but need one last bit of advice. Is it possible to remove only the grid line between the photo and the caption? See Baijiu -- the caption is separated from the photo but it's not that way in the taxoboxes, as in Euryale ferox. Thanks. Badagnani 10:28, 16 October 2006 (UTC)
Thank you for your kindness. The reason I came up with the Korean-influenced box was that there's a very dedicated Chinese editor adding a visually unattractive "floating" box (see the bright blue box at Keelung) and I tried to come up with a substitute. Badagnani 13:31, 16 October 2006 (UTC)
One more thing: the carriage return makes it look like there's too much space between the photo and the caption. Might there be any way to reduce the space between the photo and the caption? Badagnani 13:37, 16 October 2006 (UTC)
It looks about the same, if you look at Baijiu. I sort of like the taxobox, such as Euryale ferox, where the text is sandwiched closely between the photo and another colored band. I wonder if the Chinesename template might do well visually with another colored band to set off the photo and caption from the hanzi and pinyin. What do you think? I don't think the Korean one has another colored band, as in Sujeonggwa, and it's quite aesthetically pleasing. Badagnani 13:49, 16 October 2006 (UTC)
Thank you--I've transferred the code and I think it looks rather snazzy and aesthetically pleasing now. Baijiu has the bar because it has a picture and Ants climbing a tree doesn't. I think this is going to work well. Badagnani 14:23, 16 October 2006 (UTC)
One thing I've noticed: at the very top of the template, above the colored bar, there's something hiding beneath that looks strange. Can that be fixed? Badagnani 14:25, 16 October 2006 (UTC)
Korean translation
[edit]OK, you convinced me on the IFD about the North Korea image. Could you tell me what it says at the bottom of the screen in Korean? I think it would be nice to note in English. --Fastfission 15:14, 16 October 2006 (UTC)

Jipyeong-ri
[edit]Hi Visviva, Thanks for your extremely quick help in figuring out "duck wood" and fleshing out Jipyeong-ri. Very impressive! I'm not sure if proper RR would be Jipyeong-ri or Jipyeong-ni, so if I've got it wrong, please feel free to set me straight. Of course phonetically it's assimilated to ni, but I find many more hits on Google for ri. --Reuben 01:46, 20 October 2006 (UTC)
- AFAIU transcriptions of one-syllable administrative suffixes must never reflect sound assimilation, so ri is good. Wikipeditor 09:47, 20 October 2006 (UTC)
- Sorry to clutter up Visviva's talk page, but thanks for the info Wikipeditor. That was apparently not the case in the Romanization used by the UN forces during the Korean War, since texts in that context often refer to Chipyong-ni, etc. --Reuben 18:02, 20 October 2006 (UTC)

External Links
[edit]It is clearly a search result, read again its url. Please also read WP:EL#Links_normally_to_be_avoided, item #10. You can use other English site links. Or don't link it, because it is merely an external link, so it is not a source of the article. Cheers. — Indon (reply) — 12:44, 22 October 2006 (UTC)
Oh, and worse, it is in foreign language (see item #7). — Indon (reply) — 13:12, 22 October 2006 (UTC)
- That is why it is listed in the WP:EL that foreign language should be avoided as external links. Why don't you use it as a source (citation), that the information from the page is translated first? It is preferable.
- Do you know why search result should be avoided for external links? Even if it is only in the URL? Because it is not a permanent URL. It can be changed at anytime without any notice. Thus it will probably link to different page in the future without your consent.
- — Indon (reply) — 13:34, 22 October 2006 (UTC)
I was looking at these articles... and I'm wondering -- how valid exactly are the edits made recently by hairwizard and assorted anons? Gojoseon, a pre-literate proto-confederation extending over all of Korea and Manchuria? And also, the creation of an entirely new "Nangnang nation", with no written records or anything else to corroborate its existence, based solely on one single line in Samguk Sagi? This seems really fishy to me... what do you think? -- ran (talk) 15:16, 24 October 2006 (UTC)
- Unfortunately, I'm not the expert on Korean history, so I'm wary of making too many edits myself. This is why I had the idea of having some sort of concerted effort -- organized perhaps on the Korean notice board, or on Talk:Manchuria. Everyone who's interested in this topic and has helped with reverting nonsense can get involved, especially Korean editors who're knowledgeable and impartial about the subject and who will hopefully be able to communicate with the irredentists in Korean. We'd be able to keep a master list of all vulnerable articles, watch them for suspicious activity, and alert everyone quickly whenever something fishy happens. -- ran (talk) 15:58, 24 October 2006 (UTC)
I'm surprised that wasn't already a shortcut, so I've made it one. Enjoy! — Saxifrage ✎ 17:52, 24 October 2006 (UTC)
Emperors of Goguryeo
[edit]It is said that Gwanggaeto Taewang gave himself the title of Emperor Yeongnak while he was still alive. It is also said that the rulers of Goguryeo claimed themselves to be emperors, meaning that they're independent of all other nations. All I was attempting to do was to posthumously give them that honorable title. It isn't something that i fabricated out of thin air. The title of Emperor was one that the rulers of Goguryeo gave themselves. Those that came before Gwanggaeto Taewang, i am pretty sure that they given the title by their successors. Please approve of this. This has nothing to do with China's Northeast Project. This is merely a respectful descendant giving his ancestors their rightly deserved and claimed title. If u refuse to do so, then at least give me reasons as to why. ur "concensus of the historians" explanation just did not satisfy me. --Kprideboi 19:45, 24 October 2006 (UTC)
Alright. I suppose King is good enough. So ur in Korea at the moment? What for? Yo, u dont kno how lucky u r. I can only dream of being there. hahahaha. What part are u in? Seoul? Inchon? i think i'll guess Seoul. yeah, well it was nice talkin to u about that. I'll add the posthumous title thing somewhere in the Goguryeo article when i have time for it. haha. What about Taewang? can the first titles be removed and Taewang be put in its place? i'm watching a Korean drama called Yeon Gaesommun, about the Goguryeo hero. And it starts from the time of Yeongyang Taewang. The historical narrator who pops up from time-to-time refers to Goguryeo's rulers as Taewang as the respective title. can u consider that for a moment? Taewang and Daewang are like Khan and Khaghan. They're also respective titles that i'm sure are accurate and included in some sayings of Korean historians. This is the traditional title of the Goguryeo kings, and it even pops up in a Sageuk drama. Sageuk is historical. ur in Korea so u should know that.. hahaha. The thing is, i just want the world to know that my country has a history too, and wikipedia is probably the best place to do it, isn't it? BUT i want to stay accurate while doing this. I'm almost certain that Taewang is the right title, and not a posthumous thing. please consider this much.--Kprideboi 15:30, 25 October 2006 (UTC)
Hi, do you know if there are there hanja for jjigae? I'm thinking that the infobox should say "Hanja: none" when this is the case so future editors don't have to hunt around for them when they've been left out (or when they're extremely obscure and nobody knows what they are because even contemporary dictionaries don't list them). Thanks! Badagnani 22:47, 24 October 2006 (UTC)
Yes, I know about that controversy. It's sad, because insistence on non-use (perhaps due to a reluctance to admit Chinese influence) cuts a people off from the history of their words and language. The situation is even worse in Vietnam, where only a handful can read the ancient texts. So, do you know if jjigae has any hanja? Badagnani 03:17, 25 October 2006 (UTC)
Choi Kyu-ha
[edit]I just looked him up on Cheongwadae and his name is indeed spelled as Choi Kyu-ha there [5]. In addition, "Choi Kyu-ha" gets 265,000 Google hits, "Choi Kyu-hah" gets 128,000, while "Choe Gyuha" gets only 459. On Google news, "Choi Kyu-hah" gets 83 news items, while "Choi Kyu-ha" gets 2, and "Choe Gyuha" gets nothing. However, I cannot move this page by normal methods at this time due to the existing redirects, so we'll probably have to go through WP:RM. Scobell302 19:11, 25 October 2006 (UTC)

These back-to-forth disputes have turned into squabbles over how to read ancient texts like 史記, 漢書, 後漢書, 三國史記, etc., which were all written in Classical Chinese and are therefore maddeningly ambiguous anyways. (Not to mention that what we're doing smacks heavily of Original Research.) I think what we really need are authoritative academic sources. Do you think you might be able find some? -- ran (talk) 18:26, 28 October 2006 (UTC)

Monarch list templates
[edit]Hi again, Visviva. I just made lists of kings for each of the Three Kingdoms, to make it easier browse through the articles and see them in context. I tried to learn from other lists like these, but I need your help with the second Silla list: Template:Silla monarchs 2. I would like the numbering start at 30, but I don't know how to do this. Please make any other changes to make these better.
Since I will be adding the lists to the monarch articles, do you think we still need the "Preceeded by"/"Succeeded by"? I thought these were hard to notice at the bottom, inconsistent, and confusing to edit. Thanks for your help. Goguryeo 16:49, 27 October 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for your help with the Three Kingdoms monarchs lists. I personally think it would be more intuitive to see a vertical numbered list, rather than a horizontal block at the bottom. Can you make the fonts smaller, and/or the margins smaller so that the box is thinner? Goguryeo 22:09, 31 October 2006 (UTC)

I have a question
[edit]Hi. How are you. I see your comment in Samjoseon, and you said I must show the mainstream results. How can the mainstream results are defined? Actually, there is a research result by scholar even though they are no engaged in college institute. Arent they a main stream researcher? --Hairwizard91 13:57, 30 October 2006 (UTC)
- By the way, I am sorry the previous time. I thought that you were Korean. Sorry again. --Hairwizard91 13:57, 30 October 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for your explanation. I understand your explanation. The nangnang state is actually accepted by many historians. But three gojoseon was firstly suggested by Cheho Sin, and it is neither rejected nor accepted by historians because there is only one controversary history book (as you know hwandangogi). Chaeho Sin had suggested the three gojoseon before the hwandan gogi is published to the people, and the work of Chaeho Sin are shared by Hwandangogi.
- The reason why three gojoseon is not reject is that the history 200 BC - 10 AD cannot be explained without three gojoseon such as gija joseon, wiman joseon, chinese commandery (includes lelang commandery), buyeo, mahan, and nangnang state. They are all interconnected with three gojoseon. However, three gojoseon is hard to be studied because of lack of records, and acheological study is block by China. I hope three gojoseon will remain as even myth in Wiki. --Hairwizard91 14:31, 30 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit]Dear Visviva, Korean usually build a house such that all of houses should be toward to South. So, most of korean people think that the front is south, and then they named the mountain in front of them as South Mountain. I couldnt fine any reference, but I may be correct. --Drpepper000 14:44, 31 October 2006 (UTC).

Wikipedia Documentary Film
[edit]Hello Visviva-
My name is Nic Hill and I'm directing a documentary film about Wikipedia. I am following Jimmy Wales around the world and documenting the movement. I'm traveling to India with Jimmy in late February but I'll be in Seoul from feb 17th to feb 19th. I was wondering if you would be interested in meeting up when we come to town? or if you know any Korean Wikipedian living in Seoul who might be interested... Any language is ok. So far we have filmed at Wikimania 2006 (USA), Tokyo, and Hong Kong.
Please take a look at our movie trailer... http://www.underdogpictures.com/wikidoc/wikienter.htm
Thank you for your time. Please contact me if you are interested in being a part of this documentary film.
