Henry Schade

[edit]

Hi, thanks for the kind words! I have no personal connection with Schade - it's been a while, but I think I probably got started from the DANFS reference to USS Rabaul (CVE-121) being christened by Alice Schade, and assembled the bits from poking around online. You can tell it dates from my early WP days, I don't actually cite any of the sources! I know one of them was the Gibbs Medal bio. In any case, feel free to augment the article with any cite-able material - is your book published? It would be an ideal reference. Stan 14:48, 31 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Robert Keeton

[edit]

No, I don't have a personal link to Robert Keeton (although I wish I had). It's great that you know some information about Liscome Bay; if you can source the info, I would like to have it in the article. Are you a journalist? Warmest regards --Neutralitytalk 05:04, 7 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks

[edit]

Just wanted to thank you for your kind comments about my article USCGC Icarus (WPC-110). When my first few (previous) ships articles were reviewed, I got a lot of feedback about formatting, standards, etc - helpful and necessary, but not as satisfying as your 'well done'. Maybe I am getting the hang of things :) Maralia 03:30, 21 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Civility warning

[edit]

You have repeatedly made threatening and uncivil attacks on other Wikipedia editors on the Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Ships page. This is in clear and blatant violation of our civility policy and our no personal attacks policy.

You are welcome to contribute to Wikipedia. You are not welcome to continue abusing or threatening other editors here. If you do so any further, you will be blocked for a brief period of time and warned again.

This behavior is unacceptable for contributors here. If you chose to behave in a mature and responsible manner, and continue constructively editing, then you'll be welcome here. You're free to disagree and argue with other editors - just don't attack or insult them. If it would be unacceptable behavior at work, it's unacceptable behavior here.

If you are not willing to meet our personal conduct policies, then please stop editing on your own. If you reject them and force us to block you then the situation will simply be regrettable on all sides.

Thank you. Georgewilliamherbert 22:57, 24 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This is your last warning.
If you continue to make personal attacks on other people, you will be blocked for disruption. Comment on content, not on other contributors or people.

I suggest you mete out your grave warnings in equal measure. This is a direct result of unsolicited email harrassment perpetrated by your own TomTheHand. By condemning me you condone your Wiki Administrators attacking users in private using email so as to avoid the embarrassment of revealing their own childish behavior in a public forum. As for me, I had the character to stand up, and do so in public, and defend myself from his attacks. If punitive action is to come my way while excusing the causal acts of your Administrator, who might I contact with a more formal complaint? Xl five lx 23:14, 24 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

If you have been harrassed in Wikipedia email-link emails you can bring it to the attention of any administrator, including me, or a member of the Arbitration Committee.
We cannot warn or act based on claims of email harrassment; someone would need to see the emails in question. Please don't post them to WP publically, that's considered a privacy violation of the sender's privacy, but you can forward them for review.
We can and must act based on what you do here in public. Even if you were being harrassed in email, what you did on-wiki violates our policies. You are not allowed to violate our policies if someone attacks you outside Wikipedia. Two wrongs are not right, and if you commit the second wrong where we see it, in violation of Wikipedia policies, then you will be prevented from further on-wiki abuse.
If you want to forward evidence of email harrassment I'll review it impartially. I don't have any prior working relationship with Tom that I can recall, so there's no conflict of interest there. If you want to send it to another admin instead, that's your right as well. Georgewilliamherbert 23:23, 24 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Appreciate the prompt reply. Your comment If you want to forward evidence of email harrassment I'll review it impartially. I don't have any prior working relationship with Tom that I can recall, so there's no conflict of interest there. is interesting. I will indeed see how much of, if not all, the emails are still on my mail client. Itr is a bit ironic you claim to have had no previous contact with Tom yet it is you he must have run to resulting in your warning. If you could address this seemingly single contradiction, I would prefer to remain with you. Thanks. Xl five lx 23:33, 24 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

He posted to the Wikipedia Administrators' Noticeboard for Incidents asking for impartial admin review.
I am notionally a WP:SHIPS participant (my undergrad degree was in Naval Architecture, though I shifted career paths into IT and Aerospace Engineering). But I'm not really active there (can't recall the last thing I did other than helping start the Mideaval Cannons ship armaments article, and active work a year ago on Metacentric height and Double hull and Strength of ships. Georgewilliamherbert 23:39, 24 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. I will be in touch soon. I apologize but I made a commitment over a month ago to Stan Shebs to work on a particular article he roughed out years ago with little to go on and no sources. I have been engaged in that since we last spoke and not nearly even one-third done. Xl five lx 00:52, 25 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

George, your bachelors in Naval Architecture wouldn't have come by way of the now defunct program at UC Berkeley by any chance, would it? I'm writing about the very man that founded that program as we speak. Xl five lx 01:26, 25 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, it did. And it's not defunct, they just rolled it into the ME program... the professors are at least partly still there (and my undergrad advisor, Prof Webster, got promoted upstairs as Vice Provost of Academic Planning until he retired in 2003). Prof. Alaa Mansour is still bending structures up, Prof. Yeung is still there, etc. Prof Paulling retired, but he's still doing some stuff with the national academy, I hear. Prof Wehausen passed away a couple of years ago, but I didn't know him very well, he had retired to Emeritus a few years before I got there. Georgewilliamherbert 02:13, 25 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

OK. So you can vouch for the inaccuracy of this very old 2003 edit, yes? Would you kindly do a very brief fix for us that can stand up to scrutiny? Thank you very much. The 'he' is Packy Schade.

"In 1958 he organized a Department of Naval Architecture at Berkeley, serving as its first chair. (The department later added offshore engineering, but was always small, and finally disbanded in 1998)." Xl five lx 04:17, 25 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It wasn't disbanded, it was merged into a specialty in the Mechanical Engineering department. There were a total of 20 undergrads and about 12-14 grad students the years I was there, so "small" is definitely accurate. Good prof to student ratio, though, we had Webster, Paulling, Yeung, Mansour...
I am not a citable reliable source, but maybe I can find one. Georgewilliamherbert 04:26, 25 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I know you've already been here for awhile, and parts of the template are geared for editors with less experience than you, but since you requested wikification, I thought the menu might still provide some useful links. I think the single most important piece of wiki wizardry for you can be found in the "Quick summary" section of WP:CITE. Paradoctor (talk) 00:09, 10 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
