Francis Obiora Adeniran is an English professional footballer who plays as a striker for German superclub Bayern Munich and the England national team. Francis is widely regarded as one of the best attacking players in the world.

Early Life

[edit]

Adeniran was born in Lagos, Nigeria to a Scottish father and a Nigerian mother. Adeniran moved to Burnley in 1993 and joined the Burnley academy as a six year old in 1997, and trained there until 2009, when he was promoted to the first team.

Club Career

[edit]

Burnley (2009-2010 season)

[edit]

Adeniran was selected many times by Aitor Karanka as a substitute dating back to October 2008 - but was handed his debut in October 2009 in an EFL Cup match against Manchester City, originally wearing the no. 18 shirt, coming on as a 79th minute substitute for Scott Arfield, Burnley lost the match 4-1. On 2 December 2009, Adeniran scored his first and second goals for Burnley in a 3-2 Premier League victory against Aston Villa, becoming the first teenager to score a brace from the bench in the Premier League era. Adeniran made many more substitute appearances for Burnley, but was finally handed the start in March 2010, deployed in the no. 10 role in a tough match against leaders Chelsea. Adeniran proved his worth, scoring two free-kicks and teeing up Sam Vokes for a dramatic equaliser, as the Clarets held the Blues 3-3 at Stamford Bridge. Adeniran did not score any more goals that season, but finished as Burnley's 8th top scorer that year with 6 goals.

2010-2011: Breakout season

[edit]

The 2010-2011 season was Adeniran's breakout season, and most successful at Burnley, scoring a hat-trick in the first league match of the season against Hull City. Adeniran soon became a very lethal striker for Burnley, and ended the season as the Premier League's top scorer with 23 goals, as Burnley qualified for the UEFA Europa League for the first time in their history.

2011-2012: Continental Glory &Inter move

[edit]

Adeniran made his season debut on 15 August 2011, scoring both goals in a 2-1 victory against Stoke City. Adeniran opened his European account in his European debut against Ajax Amsterdam, setting up both goals as Burnley prevailed 2-0 in Amsterdam. Adeniran scored for 8 consecutive matches after that, as Burnley qualified for the knockout stages. Burnley lost the first leg of their quarterfinal match against Inter Milan 4-0, but Adeniran stunned the world with a world-class performance, scoring a hat-trick and setting up two for Sam Vokes as Burnley advanced, 6-4 on aggregate, to the semifinals, which they lost against Ajax 5-2, on aggregate. Adeniran ended the Premier League season as Burnley's 4th top scorer with 7 goals. On 27 July 2012, Burnley announced that they had sold Adeniran to Inter for a reported fee of around £17.3 million.

Inter Milan: 2012-2013

[edit]

Adeniran was warmly welcomed by the fans, though many critics did not tip him for success in Italy's top division, Serie A. Adeniran proved them wrong by scoring Inter's fastest goal in the league to date, controlling a Wesley Sneijder cross superbly and slotting it past Roma goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, as Inter won 2-0. On 19 May 2013, in the 2013 UEFA Champions League Final, Adeniran scored a 96th minute equaliser, heading home from a Giuseppe Rossi cross, stunning the Paris Saint-Germain defence, and dedicated the goal to his late father, who's birthday was supposed to be on that day. Inter later won 3-2. Adeniran finished the season as the Serie A's top scorer with 38 goals, the most of any player.

2013-2014

[edit]

Adeniran scored his first league goal on matchday 6, bringing an end to a drought, netting the winner in a 2-1 win against Torino. Adeniran finished the season as the Serie A's top scorer and the Coppa d'Italia top scorer, again, with 45 goals, becoming the first player in nearly 5 years to come between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo on the season's top-scorers table in all five leagues, finishing second, only behind Messi.

2014-2015: Inter farewells

[edit]

On 13 September 2014, Bayern Munich president Karl-Heinz Rummenigge announced that they had signed Adeniran for a world-record fee of €116 million, allowing him to stay at Inter for one more season. This affected many Inter fans, as they burned his shirts and it also affected his form, as he finished the season with only 18 goals, but was still Inter's top scorer. On 7 January 2015, Adeniran won the FIFA Ballon d'Or, becoming the first Englishman to win the award since its inception and thus, sending out a message of what's to come.

Bayern Munich

2015-2016: World Record

[edit]

Adeniran made his Bundesliga debut for Bayern in a 5-0 demolition of Hamburg in the Nord-Süd derby, replacing Arjen Robben and scoring the 4th goal. 2015-2016 was a fantastic season for Adeniran and Bayern, who stated on Twitter that he "had learned many new techniques from many experienced players you ain't seen nothing yet". Adeniran, Lewandowski and Douglas Costa combined to become one of the most fearsome attacking trios on the planet, scoring a combined 83 goals in 2015-16, the most of any attacking trio of different ethnicities. Adeniran ended the season in good form, scoring 30 goals, as Bayern did the double and reached the semis of the UEFA Champions League.

2016-17

[edit]

Adeniran scored a hat-trick in the Bundesliga curtain-raiser as Bayern destroyed RB Leipzig 7-0. On 22 November 2016, Adeniran was included in the UEFA Team Of The Year. On 29 November 2016, Adeniran set a new world record, becoming the first player to score three different types of goals - one with his left foot, another with his right foot and the last with his head - in less than 20 minutes, first curling a delicious ball with his dominant left foot into the Leverkusen goal, then tapping in with his right foot from a Xabi Alonso cross, and finally leaping above Lars Bender to score a glancing header, dipping over goalkeeper Bernd Leno as Bayern powered to victory 4-2. On 3 December 2016, Adeniran scored a goal and assisted Thiago Alcantara's late winner in "Der Klassiker" match against Borussia Dortmund, as Bayern increased their lead at the top of the log to 4 points.

International Career

[edit]

Adeniran made his England debut, starting in an 8-0 World Cup Qualifier victory against minnows San Marino and scoring twice. Adeniran scored 8 goals, the most of any Englishman in one World Cup finals - as England triumphed against Switzerland 1-0 at Wembley. Adeniran has amassed 59 caps for England, scoring 40 goals, and currently has the highest goals-per-game ratio of any player.

Personal life

[edit]

Off the pitch, Adeniran is a bubbling personality. He is an influential Twitter user, and as of January 2016, is the Bundesliga's most followed person with 21.4 million followers. Adeniran is a Manchester United supporter, and has been spotted at Old Trafford many times, including their most recent match against Everton., prompting the media to hint at a possible switch in the future, which Adeniran has denied. Asked about his inspiration on the pitch, Adeniran told BBC Sport that he idolizes David Beckham, and was honored to meet him after winning the UEFA Champions League with Inter Milan. Adeniran's signature celebration ranges from a gesture to his fans, casual power slide or a shirt removal, depending on the significance of the goal, such as when he raced to the stands to embrace and kiss his fianceé Ashley Olsen after scoring the equaliser in Inter's Champions League triumph in 2013. Adeniran is an avid player and ambassador of the world's most popular football simulation video games, Football Manager and FIFA.
