Vedhalam ([Phantom] Error: {{Lang-xx}}: text has italic markup (help)) is an upcoming 2015 Indian Tamil action film written and directed by Siva, and produced by A. M. Rathnam. The film stars Ajith Kumar, Shruti Haasan, Lakshmi Menon, Aniket Chouhan, Kabir Singh and many others in the lead roles. Anirudh Ravichander compose the music and background score.

Development

After the Super Hit sucess of their previous collaboration Veeram (2014), Siva announced that he would direct Ajith again along with Ashwin.[1] A. M. Ratnam was announced as producer collaborating with Ajith for third time after Arrambam (2013) and Yennai Arindhaal (2015). G. V. Prakash Kumar was originally chosen to compose the music however he was replaced by Anirudh.[2]

Casting

Tamannaah and Hansika Motwani were originally considered for the lead pair finally Shruti Haasan was chosen.[3] Lakshmi Menon was selected to play Ajith's sister . Kabir Singh was selected to portray negative role after makers were impressed with his performance in Telugu film Jil (2015).[4] Santhanam and Soori were choosen to play the comedy roles. Later Vidyullekha Raman revealed about her role in the film, she did a small flashback portion in the second half.

Filming

The film was launched in Chennai on 9 April 2015 with a pooja by A. M. Rathnam,Siruthai Siva and other crew members. The shooting of the movie started on 7 May 2015.It may be mentioned here that director Siva intended to can the first schedule of this film in Kolkata as the story is set there but decided to erect sets at the Binny Mills and complete a major portion of the shooting in Chennai.

Soundtrack

The soundtrack composed by Anirudh Ravichander is scheduled to release on the 16th of October 2015 coinciding his birthday.[5] This film is scheduled to release on Diwali 2015.[6] A video from the song shooting from the movie, titled 'Getha Vidatha' has been leaked on YouTube. [7] Shruthi Haasan sings a song for the movie. [8]

Marketing

The film's title and first look poster were reported to be revealed in September 2015, on Ganesh Chaturthi which didn't happen. On 23 September, Ajith's manager Suresh Chandraa officially confirmed via Twitter that the title and the first look will release on that night. The title was rumoured to be "Varam" or "Vedalam". At 12:00 am, the film's first look and title was released which confirmed the title 'Vedalam'. Behindwoods posted a review on the film's first look: "Ajith wears a super cool red kurta with short trimmed hair, a trim stubble, to go with a metal bracelet in one of the hands and a big stud in his left ear. A look that takes us back to his 'Red' days. ".[9] [10]

The title 'Vedalam (["Phantom] Error: {{Lang-xx}}: text has italic markup (help)) was initially registred by Raghava Lawrence and as it was choosen as the title of the film, the team bought the title from Raghava Lawrence. The film's teaser was earlier reported to release on 1st October at 12 pm, which didn't happen. The teaser will be 47 seconds long and could be released on 8th October. [11] [12]

Distribution

MM Media has bought the USA distribution rights of Ajith’s Vedalam which is scheduled to release for this Diwali . Apparently, the distribution house is planning for a grand release in USA and within minutes, all areas got sold out.

Mean time, area wise distribution rights of Vedalam in Tamil Nadu has been locked and reportedly AM Ratnam , the producer of the film has sold it for a low price[13]. Vedalam’s Karnataka distribution rights are with Gokulraj while KG Nair has bought the Kerala rights of the film.

Reportedly, Ayngaran International has bought the rest of the overseas rights.
