WWIL-FM (90.5 FM) is a radio station broadcasting a Contemporary Christian format. Licensed to Wilmington, North Carolina, USA, the station serves the Wilmington area. The station is currently owned by Carolina Christian Radio Inc. The station has obtained a construction permit from the FCC for a power increase to 40,000 watts.[1][2]
History
Family Radio Network purchased WWIL in 1993 and, while the station struggled at first, the station was soon doing so well that Jim Stephens planned an FM station.[3]
WWIL-FM signed on in 1995 with 20,000 watts and a Contemporary Christian music format that included Sandi Patti, Michael W. Smith, Wayne Watson and First Call as well as talk show hosts Chuck Colson, D. James Kennedy, Joni Eareckson Tada and Chuck Swindoll.[4]
The station's owners purchased The Dove FM 89.7 and WMYT for $1.2 million (the company also owned WLSG at the time), according to volunteer manager D. Chuck Langley, who had run the stations since the beginning but wanted to focus on his realty and marketing businesses.[5]
