Fixing articles

[edit]

After fixing an article should i remove the message saying it needs to be fixed? ChromiumOverload (Talk 📨) 02:00, 9 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@ChromiumOverload: If you believe you have addressed the problems, you may remove the message. If another user disagrees they can reinstate it. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 02:20, 9 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

"Search and replace" computes inadequate number of replacements! (done)

[edit]

When I replaced the expression "county court" with "County Court" here (use this exact version!) via the editor's "Search and replace" option, it said that 13 replacements were made, although in fact only 3.5 (!) replacements were made. How come?--Hildeoc (talk) 02:04, 9 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

You didn't enable "Match case" so 9 "County Court" were also replaced, in this case with the identical "County Court" but it still counts as a replacement. PrimeHunter (talk) 03:35, 9 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks a lot! Best wishes--Hildeoc (talk) 07:30, 9 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Year in Country (national historical timeline) articles

[edit]

There is a category of articles in the encyclopaedia in the general form [Year] in [country], for example 2022 in Ireland.

All kinds of random trivial junk can wind up in these list articles with no apparent rules documented or any style guide discoverable to describe how these articles should be maintained and what constitutes a sufficiently notable event to qualify for entry in such lists.

In the example mentioned, 2022 in Ireland, already this year we have a story of some non-notable people being injured in a car accident, and another story documenting the drowning of a non-notable somebody in a banal swimming accident.

Clearly, this hypergranular, parochial, and historically insignificant level of detail is not what articles under the encyclopaedia category of History should be about.

My question is, where is the project page or discussion page or manual of style or any venue whatsoever where this sort of thing can be discussed? I have been unable to find any venue within the encyclopedia where such concerns, or other concerns or guidelines regarding such articles, can be explored or discussed. Thank you. O'Dea (talk) 02:49, 9 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@O'Dea: The articles are within the scope of Wikipedia:WikiProject Years with discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Years. Wikipedia:Timeline standards has some guidance but is mainly about general years like 2022 and not country-specific articles. PrimeHunter (talk) 03:52, 9 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Search within an article

[edit]

As some articles are very comprehensive, how do I search for the terms I'm interested in? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.13.128.91 (talk) 03:29, 9 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia doesn't have that feature but most browsers and devices do. What are you using? PrimeHunter (talk) 03:38, 9 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Pressing CTRL+F or CMD+F and entering your search term in the pop-up box works in most cases.--Shantavira|feed me 09:40, 9 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I use Firefox on a couple of PCs; I use Safari on a Mac. In each case, there is a "Find" feature. On Firefox, I go to Edit, and Find in Page is one of the options. On Safari, I also go to Edit. There, the Find option presents several sub options, one of which is to find on page. In either case, a little box appears, and you type whatever you're looking for into that box.
