Radio adaptation of war of the worlds causing public panic

[edit]

Did the radio adaptation of War of the Worlds actually cause a public panic? According to subsection intelligent 'martians' of subsection 'In Culture' of the article on Mars, there was a public panic caused by the radio play. I remember one time hearing someone on the radio say that this is actually a myth.24.207.71.235 (talk) 00:29, 7 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The War of the Worlds (radio drama) covers this extensively. I removed that sentence from Mars. -- BenRG (talk) 01:17, 7 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
It's certainly not a myth, but it has become somewhat exaggerated. Folks who missed the announcement(s) that it was just a play, were more likely to freak out. One example: The banner headline for the Asbury Park Evening News for Oct 31, 1938: "[Jersey] Shore Shares in Panic Caused by Radio Hoax." ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots03:35, 7 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Please read the article, especially The War of the Worlds (radio drama)#Extent and The War of the Worlds (radio drama)#Newspaper coverage and response, before citing contemporary newspapers as evidence. -- BenRG (talk) 05:11, 7 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, the perception of the extent of the panic is now considered to be exaggerated. There is an account on page 2 of Welles essentially apologizing for causing "some apprehension" due to "a misunderstanding." It doesn't read like he thinks there was truly mass hysteria. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots06:25, 7 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
For anyone who is interested the PBS documentary covers the event from a number of angles. The info that many people had tuned - there was channel surfing for radio :-) - to the drama after it had started since they had been listening to another program was fun to learn. MarnetteD|Talk 18:35, 7 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
That was a major issue, and as I recall from that show (or elsewhere) there was a suspicion that the show's producers were counting on people turning in late - although there were other announcements during the show. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots19:07, 7 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
As explained in The War of the Worlds (radio drama)#Causes, there was never any evidence that people switched en masse from The Chase and Sanborn Hour to War of the Worlds. "Many Americans assumed" it at the time, and it became part of the mythology of the broadcast, and it's still repeated by reporters who think their story is about other people's gullibility when it's actually about their own. -- BenRG (talk) 20:54, 7 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
At the very least, anyone who thought Martians were really coming had either missed the very beginning or hadn't paid attention to it. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots21:42, 7 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Well the article suggests many thought it was either a German invasion or a natural disaster not an alien invasion. Nil Einne (talk) 13:56, 10 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

One Tree Hill - Happy Ending or Cliffhanger

[edit]

Did each season of One Tree Hill ended with a happy ending or a cliffhanger? 86.169.72.176 (talk) 21:02, 7 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

You have several options for finding out the answer yourself 1) you could watch the shows yourself, or 2) You could read the Wikipedia summaries of each season or 3) You can read IMDB summaries for the show. --Jayron32 23:32, 8 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Extra Websites?

[edit]

Besides Wikipedia, is there other Appropriate Websites to ask Questions about any Film?(76.20.88.33 (talk) 21:21, 7 May 2016 (UTC)).[reply]

Probably the biggest Q&A site out there is Stack Exchange, in this case specifically http://movies.stackexchange.com. Make sure you take the tour first to see how things work there. Rojomoke (talk) 22:03, 7 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. Just search Google for something like <movie discussion forum> or some such terms. IMDb's message boards, located here, are pretty popular. Rotten Tomatoes probably has discussion boards as well. Dismas|(talk) 22:04, 7 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

What does mean "congreso federacion colombofila" in english?--Ip80.123 (talk) 22:00, 7 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

According to Google Translate, it means "federacion Congress Colombofila". Dismas|(talk) 22:02, 7 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
It looks like "colombofila" means "pigeon fanciers", but you'd probably do better asking this at the Language Desk Rojomoke (talk) 22:07, 7 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
That's what it is.[1]Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots22:16, 7 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Movie Quiz Questions

[edit]

Hoping you can provide the answers to the following: > Which eponymous character is set to return to the big screen this July (2016) after a 9 yr hiatus? > In a 1995 movie 2 lead actors played a police officer and a villain, and in 2007 the same 2 actors played reversed roles in another movie. Actors and both movies? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 202.36.254.250 (talk) 23:44, 7 May 2016 (UTC) XXXX[reply]

Is answer to question 2? Denzel Washington / Russell Crowe - Virtuosity (1995) / American Gangster (2007) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 202.36.254.250 (talk) 02:22, 8 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I've linked the two titles for you so that you can confirm for yourself. And if we answer either of these questions, do we get half the prize? Dismas|(talk) 03:55, 8 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
And for Q1, check out imdb's list of movies coming out in July. Hint, he's recovered from his amnesia. Rojomoke (talk) 04:55, 8 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
You might say he's Bourne again. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots06:53, 8 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
