We're about to start a period that's going to be unbearable for those who dislike football, or call it soccer.

The biggest football (soccer to a small number of you) tournament – and the biggest tournament in the world – starts on November 20. Normally, the World Cup would be in June-July but as one journalist would put it: "you could fry an egg on [his] head". But the biggest talking point is off the pitch. Not only Qatar's abysmal human rights record, but also the fact they allegedly got the World Cup after bribing officials.

3	Mohamed Al-Fayed	1,323,833	Of all the characters in season 5 of The Crown, these two seem to have inspired the most interest, perhaps as they are much less well known than the series' other characters. #3 is an Egyptian billionaire (played by Salim Daw), and #4 is his son (played by Khalid Abdalla), who was in a relationship with Diana, Princess of Wales at the time of their deaths in a car crash.

5	Sam Bankman-Fried	1,038,577	After the collapse of the cryptocurrency exchange FTX, its founder and former CEO remains in the news, up from #22 on this list last week. The arena of the Miami Heat will be forced to change their name, and the bets are on if something like this will also happen with the Lakers' one.
6	ICC Men's T20 World Cup	973,287	The Barmy Army rejoiced as England won the final defeating Pakistan fairly comfortably, featuring brilliant bowling from Sam Curran and masterful control from Ben Stokes. Pakistan had hoped for a '92 repeat, but ended up disappointed.
7	Deaths in 2022	939,040	I see it in your eyes, take one look and die The only thing you see, you know it's gonna be The Ace of Spades! The Ace of Spades!
8	Christina Applegate	915,477	A former child star with plenty of comedies to her name, including her breakout role in Married... with Children, Applegate is in due to both her latest work, as Netflix released the final season of Dead to Me, and a recognition to her career in a star in the Hollywood Walk of Fame, whose unveiling was Applegate's first public appearance since she revealed a multiple sclerosis diagnosis last year.

10	Elizabeth Holmes	828,044	Ten months after the fraudster who promised a clinical revolution with Theranos was found guilty, she has been sentenced to 11.25 years in prison. And because there always seem to be complications, Holmes is pregnant.
11	Diana, Princess of Wales	778,144	After the family she approached (#3, #4) comes the Princess of the People herself, played in The Crown by Elizabeth Debicki.
12	Elon Musk	750,332	This guy is either firing or driving Twitter employees away, making the userbase worried.
13	Cristiano Ronaldo	742,476	CR7 gave a shocking interview with Piers Morgan this week about his displeasure with his club Manchester United, in which he said he felt betrayed by "three or four players", said he didn’t respect the manager, criticised the infrastructure at the club, and said there was no evolution since Fergie left. One of #1's games on Thursday, Portugal-Ghana, will make Ronaldo one of the select few who played in five World Cups. If he scores a goal, he'll become the only guy to stuff the nets in five tournaments!
14	Kari Lake	722,382	A right-wing journalist who was the Republican candidate for governor in Arizona, losing to Katie Hobbs. Following an unfortunate trend, she's claiming electoral fraud.
15	Anthony Johnson (fighter)	705,791	The 38-year-old former MMA fighter died last Sunday (on November 13, 2022) from Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis and non-Hodgkin lymphoma, which is a complicated way of saying blood cancer.
16	Krishna (Telugu actor)	685,909	Tollywood lost this prolific actor at the age of 79, leaving behind a filmography of 350 titles.
17	The Crown (season 5)	683,120	Netflix's show about the British monarchs entered the 90s, a fairly bad period that included divorces, scandals, fires, and the like (although the worst part might've been saved for the next season).
18	1899 (TV series)	676,453	Splitting the show on the British Royals and its protagonist is Netflix's next hit German thriller after Dark, following a group of European migrants on their voyage to New York City, in the same year as the title.
19	Elizabeth II	648,637	Imelda Staunton has taken over from Olivia Colman as the portrayer of the recently deceased main character of The Crown.
20	Qatar	633,795	The host of #1. Until the mid-20th century it was one of the world's poorest countries - then it found a massive oil field.
21	Jeffrey Dahmer	632,240	Unlike overly sensitive people, my issue is not with the existence of Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story (I was never going to watch it anyway). Only that everyone who caught in on Netflix went on to make its subject matter the most viewed article of the year so far.
22	Black Panther (film)	619,787	The predecessor to #2, whose star (pictured) filmed while hiding he had terminal cancer. One should not expect the sequel to repeat the runaway success, but then again over a billion dollars and a Best Picture nomination is a very high ceiling!
23	2022 FIFA World Cup squads	600,709	Unlike past tournaments, #1 raised the number of drafted players to 26. #13, his rival Lionel Messi and Andrés Guardado are going to their fifth tournaments (technically Memo Ochoa, seen with Guardado to the left, also qualifies, but he did not play in his first two).
24	Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon	586,608	The sister of #19. Lesley Manville took over the role in #17.
25	Ron DeSantis	580,014	The 44-year-old Florida governor is keeping 76-year-old Donald Trump on his toes. No one knows yet if he will run for President of the United States in 2024.
