Scope of this task force?

Please see the discussion here. Kirill Lokshin 15:54, 20 July 2006 (UTC)

I have given my inputs there -- Lost 16:36, 20 July 2006 (UTC)

Assume "pre-independence south Asia" includes Nepal/ Gurkhas and Burma/ Myanmar. This ok? Folks at 137 19:05, 28 September 2006 (UTC)

I'd avoid pulling pre-19th century Burma into this task force, because it does have a rather distinct history from that of India; but after it gets annexed to British India it would presumably be naturally included here (and would intersect with the British task force as well). Kirill Lokshin 19:23, 28 September 2006 (UTC)

In my tagging and assessing frenzy, I've come across a dozen articles on modern day Sri Lanka, i.e. Sri Lanka Artillery. Are these articles within the scope of this task force or shall I leave them untagged? - Canglesea (talk) 17:05, 3 December 2008 (UTC)

Clash

Will we not be clashing with the Wikipedia:WikiProject History of India ? I.ve come across their tags on articles relating to this project. Tristan benedict 10:28, 21 July 2006 (UTC)

Military history is a rather narrower topic than overall history, so I don't think there will be any real complaints. We haven't had issues with these sorts of task forces before, even in cases where there was already a "History of Something" project in existence. Kirill Lokshin 12:06, 21 July 2006 (UTC)
Infact this is a child project of the above mentioned project and that is mentioned on the HOI project page -- Lost 17:04, 21 July 2006 (UTC)

tagged a lot of articles

get some attention--D-Boy 05:58, 24 July 2006 (UTC)

The current image used for the task force in the project banner is perhaps a bit difficult to recognize at the small size used for images there, so I was wondering if could be used instead? Or would using the modern flag raise cause problems that I'm not aware of? Kirill Lokshin 18:01, 24 July 2006 (UTC)

I'm fine with it. Only reason I put the lion one on is because all the other countries had cooler ones that weren't flags.--D-Boy 05:45, 25 July 2006 (UTC)
You could use --D-Boy 07:30, 25 July 2006 (UTC)
Okay, that seems like a good one. Kirill Lokshin 12:53, 25 July 2006 (UTC)

Why is there a pic of pak soldiers praying? Is it needed?--D-Boy 00:32, 3 August 2006 (UTC)

It's also on the Mountain warfare article. How does praying relate to this kind of warfare?--D-Boy 07:30, 3 August 2006 (UTC)
I'd guess it's the "we have a free-license picture, and should therefore add it to as many articles as possible" approach. ;-) Kirill Lokshin 11:15, 3 August 2006 (UTC)

Suggestions

A few things seemed a bit out of place, especially given the nature of major topics like ,65, and '71. These topics need to be redrafted in encyclopedic language, the topics appear as though they have been written by an Indian army colonel. The factual accuracy withstanding, the language is NPOV material. That and someone should mention the battles mentioned in the Category:Battles of the Indo-Pakistan Wars section in the individual wars. Freedom skies 19:19, 6 August 2006 (UTC)

Category:Battles of India was originally intended to be limited to articles about the modern state, with previous states in the area having their own categories. It seems to have become a catch-all for everything that occured in the region, though, which isn't really a very correct way of doing things. Maybe someone with a good knowledge of the various prior states could sort this out, creating some new sub-categories of Category:Battles by country as appropriate? New userbox for task force

I created a new userbox for the task force. You would need to put {{Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/Outreach/User WPMILHIST Indian military history task force}} for it to appear -- Lost(talk) 06:42, 26 August 2006 (UTC)

The above article was brought to my attention as being very POV[1]. Could someone work to make it a bit better please. I will also try to do so. Thanks -- Lost(talk) 07:09, 14 September 2006 (UTC)

I am sure we can add more info and make it more neutral iafguru 13:51, 14 September 2006 (UTC)

How can this be a naval victory if the article only says that marines and infantry fought in a town? Wandalstouring 11:54, 23 October 2006 (UTC)

Project directory

Hello. The WikiProject Council has recently updated the Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Directory. This new directory includes a variety of categories and subcategories which will, with luck, potentially draw new members to the projects who are interested in those specific subjects. Please review the directory and make any changes to the entries for your project that you see fit. There is also a directory of portals, at User:B2T2/Portal, listing all the existing portals. Feel free to add any of them to the portals or comments section of your entries in the directory. The three columns regarding assessment, peer review, and collaboration are included in the directory for both the use of the projects themselves and for that of others. Having such departments will allow a project to more quickly and easily identify its most important articles and its articles in greatest need of improvement. If you have not already done so, please consider whether your project would benefit from having departments which deal in these matters. It is my hope that all the changes to the directory can be finished by the first of next month. Please feel free to make any changes you see fit to the entries for your project before then. If you should have any questions regarding this matter, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you. B2T2 21:35, 25 October 2006 (UTC)

Maps

I'm interested in making free svg maps. Please drop me a note on my talk page if you need any. =Nichalp «Talk»= 09:21, 26 November 2006 (UTC)

We definitely need them, especially for the 1971 War articles --AW 18:09, 4 December 2006 (UTC)

Army Regiments

I have updated information on some of the Army regiments using Bharat-Rakshak as my source. I have updated information on all the Gorkha regiments in the Indian Army and have moved the pages so as to reflect their current regimental names. I have kept the information in all the Gorkha regiments, especially information about their operations prior to independence. I primarily added infoboxes, regimental insignias and as much information about their operations after independence using information from BR. I noticed that there is some information on the 5GR pertaining to their operations in 1945, 1965 and 1971. I will try to create new pages for these battles and link it back to the 5GR.

I have also updated information on the Rajput Regiment(needed to be cleaned up as it was an essay) and enhanced the Punjab Regiment pages. Rakeshsharma 03:03, 5 December 2006 (UTC)

Very nice work! Kirill Lokshin 03:10, 5 December 2006 (UTC)

New article on Ghazni

Someone started an article recently on the Battle of Ghazni. It looks like it needs some work connecting it to the proper war, conflict, campaign, etc. I don't know enough about the subject thus am posting this here. Cla68 03:00, 8 December 2006 (UTC)

talk of some new stubs. add your input.--D-Boy 12:25, 24 December 2006 (UTC)

Battles involving the Rajputs

Have added this category but am unable to edit the page:

http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Category:Battles_involving_the_Rajputs&action=edit

Can someone do it by adding the following battles:

Battles of Taraori

Battle of Haldighati

Battle of Khanua

Maharaja Jaswant Singh(Battle of Dharmat)

General Zorawar Singh (Battle of Tibet?)

As and when the famous battle where the Rajputs defeated the Arab invaders is created on wiki it should be placed here. The various sieges of the Rajput forts can also be considered as battles and can be listed here.

Gallantry Award Recipients pages

The pages for recipients of Gallantry awards like PVC, MVC and others, as well as war heroes needs to be cleaned up in my opinion. They read like obituaries and citations. This does not help in giving information. A better way would be to provide a small introduction and overview of their life, like in most biographies, and keep a separate section for the citation itself. A good example would be the pages for Easy Company members, for eg. Richard Winters. This I think is a good template to follow for the PVC winners pages as well. Sniperz11 07:19, 24 July 2007 (UTC)

A-Class review for Battle of Panipat (1761) now open

The A-Class review for Battle of Panipat (1761) is now open; all editors are invited to participate, and any input there would be appreciated! Thanks! Kirill 01:48, 9 August 2007 (UTC)

I do have knowledge and adequate references about the battle and would like to help as soon as possible. Just working on the mode of editing. ThanksKesangh (talk) 06:46, 20 November 2008 (UTC)

How about adding the battle image to the taxobox. Did'nt work on my computer preview, dont know why? AshLin (talk) 15:04, 20 November 2008 (UTC)

Further directions for the WikiProject

Hi,

We need to take on the following as separate wiki category/stub/etc , Battle and Theatre Honours, names of honours and awards both pre- and post independence and names of award winners of the highest awards. Since I didn't have time to do a search for this, please disregard if this is already done.

DRDO Lab pages

I am creating the lab pages for the individual DRDO laboratories. I'd love help and any suggestions in this regard. I have created a sandbox page for the labs at User:Sniperz11/Sandbox 3 where I've created infoboxes for the individual DRDO labs.

I've created general format for the lab pages to follow, which is also on the sandbox page. I've also created a template for the labs at Template:DRDO Laboratories. The template links to the individual lab pages, or at least to those pages that exist. I request you to help out in creating more pages... the more the merrier. Thanks. Afghanistan?

Does this task force include Afghanistan in its scope. If not, does anyone know whether it's included elsewhere? Folks at 137 (talk) 19:04, 27 December 2007 (UTC)

I don't think it's included anywhere at the moment. There was some discussion previously about setting up a Central Asia-type task force, but that never went anywhere. Kirill 21:16, 27 December 2007 (UTC)

User:Sarvagnya has started a discussion about Bharat Rakshak (site) and its reliability as a source (WP:RS) at Noticeboard for India-related topics. I request interested editors to contribute, since a majority of Indian Defence related articles use Bharat Rakshak as a primary source of information. T/@Sniperz11 editssign 02:33, 7 February 2008 (UTC)

Use Bharat Rakshak as a reference sparingly as a matter of principle. Prefer written text references to Bharat Rakshak if you have a choice. AshLin (talk) 07:51, 27 October 2008 (UTC)

Divisions of Pakistan

Since there is not yet a Pakistan task force, just quickly raising something here. All assistance would be welcome, especially with sources, with a draft in my userspace User:Buckshot06/List of divisions and brigades of the Pakistan Army. Thanks, Buckshot06(prof) 12:09, 27 June 2008 (UTC)

Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

  • The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
  • The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
  • A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.

Please leave a message with us if you have any queries regarding the introduction of the revised scheme. This scheme should allow the team to start producing offline selections for your project and the wider community within the next year. Thanks for using the Wikipedia 1.0 scheme! Wikipedia 0.7 articles have been selected for Indian military history

Wikipedia 0.7 is a collection of English Wikipedia articles due to be released on DVD, and available for free download, later this year. The Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team has made an automated selection of articles for Version 0.7.

We would like to ask you to review the articles selected from this project. These were chosen from the articles with this project's talk page tag, based on the rated importance and quality. If there are any specific articles that should be removed, please let us know at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.7. You can also nominate additional articles for release, following the procedure at Wikipedia:Release Version Nominations.

A list of selected articles with cleanup tags, sorted by project, is available. The list is automatically updated each hour when it is loaded. Please try to fix any urgent problems in the selected articles. A team of copyeditors has agreed to help with copyediting requests, although you should try to fix simple issues on your own if possible.

We would also appreciate your help in identifying the version of each article that you think we should use, to help avoid vandalism or POV issues. These versions can be recorded at this project's subpage of User:SelectionBot/0.7. We are planning to release the selection for the holiday season, so we ask you to select the revisions before October 20. At that time, we will use an automatic process to identify which version of each article to release, if no version has been manually selected. Thanks!
