Windows Phone 8.1 (codenamed "Blue") is Microsoft's next major update to Windows Phone. Documentation for the SDK also confirms that all current Windows Phone 8 devices will get the 8.1 upgrade. Windows Phone 8.1 apps will not run on WP8 devices, but older apps made for Windows Phone 7 and Windows Phone 8 will run on WP8.1 smartphones.<ref name="reddit.com"/>

On April 14, 2014, Microsoft released Windows Phone 8.1 through its developer preview program which, although contrary to the name, is accessible to any user. On May 14, 2014, a first update to the Preview for Developers followed. On June 2, 2014 and on June 12, 2014 have been released other two updates to fix some minor bugs and to enable the compatibility of Windows Phone 8.1 to other devices.
