Yasmin Finney (born 30 August 2003)[1] is an English actress and internet personality. She appeared on GLAAD's second annual 20 Under 20 list.[2] She is known for her role as Elle Argent in the Netflix series Heartstopper, which she has played since 2022. In May 2022, it was announced she would join the cast of Doctor Who in 2023. She will be in the upcoming film Mars.

Early life

Finney was born in 2003 and grew up in Manchester.[2][3] She was brought up by a single mother.[4] She participated in a number of local theatre productions growing up,[5] including in the University of Manchester's Sackville Theatre,[6] The Royal Exchange Theater and The Aylesbury Waterside Theater.[7][non-primary source needed] She went to college to study performing arts.[8]

Career

Finney initially gained prominence through her videos on TikTok about her experiences as a Black British transgender teenager.[citation needed] At the age of 17 in April 2021, Finney was cast as Kelsa in the Billy Porter film Anything's Possible and Elle Argent in the Netflix series Heartstopper, the latter of which premiered in 2022.[9][10] She had to pull out of Anything's Possible due to COVID-19 travel restrictions impacting her ability to get a United States work visa, leading her to be replaced by Eva Reign.[11]

On 16 May 2022, it was announced that Finney would join the cast of Doctor Who for the 60th anniversary in 2023.[12] Her character, Rose, who is planned to be transgender,[13] is set to be the Doctor's latest companion.[14]

In August 2022, it was announced that Finney would star in the upcoming short film Mars as the character Charlie Acaster. The film will premiere in October at the London Film Festival.[15]

Personal life

Finney is a trans woman.[3]
