Kolayat is a town in the Bikaner district of the Indian state of Rajasthan. It is also the headquarters of the eponymous tehsil.[1] The town is 51 kilometres (32 mi) from Bikaner on National Highway 15 to Jaisalmer.
History
[edit]Kolayat is an historical centre of pilgrimage where the Vedic sage, Kapila is believed by some to have shed his body under a Peepul tree. Kolayat has a number of marble temples, sandstone pavilions and 52 ghats (bathing places) built around a large artificial lake.
A temple dedicated to Kapila is the venue for an annual fair held in the month of Kartik (October - November). During full moon of this month thousands of devotees of the Sankhya philosophy gather to take a dip in Kapil Sarovar. Devotees believe the lake has the power to wash away their sins. A livestock fair, mainly for the trading of camels is part of the festivities. [2]
Mineral Exploration Corporation Limited (MECL) had an office at Kolayat, functioning until 1997.[citation needed] It was wound up after the end of mineral exploration activities in the surrounding areas.
Demographics
[edit]As of 2001[update] India census,[3] Kolayat had a population of 7,346, of which 3,963 were male and 3,383 female.[4]

Kolayat is a city in Bikaner district of Rajasthan state of India. It is also the headquarters of the tehsil of the same name. [1] This city is 6 km south of National Highway 11 from Bikaner, it is the largest assembly constituency of Bikaner, Bikaner is 45 km to its east, Phalodi is 120 km to the west, Nokha is 75 km to the south and the international border is 110 km to the north. Places of attraction in Kolayat area
Gajner Palace » This Gajner Palace is a major center of attraction for tourists due to being located on the banks of the lake. This Gajner Palace is spread over a vast area of about 6000 crores. The architecture of this palace is inspired by Jain and Mughal architecture and this palace also has a mixture of Rajasthani architecture.
The windows, sculptures and sandstone workmanship in this palace make it even more worth seeing. Dungar Niwas, Champa Niwas, Gulab Niwas and Mandir Chowk are the main attractions in this palace. Dungar Niwas located here includes 1308
which were used to host the British people during the British period. Mandir Chowk is the last wing of this palace, which has a centuries-old banyan tree and an ancient temple and a reception room.
During the British period, 32 executive rooms were also built in Gulab Niwas located in this palace for railway officials. Tourists can also enjoy cycling, lawn tennis, bird watching and wildlife safari in this palace.

Dharamshala» Dharamshala of all castes is built in Shri Kolayat, in which proper arrangements are made for the pilgrims coming from outside, which includes Rajput, Jat, Kumawat, Kumhar, Nayak, Meghwal, Od, Rana, Sen, Bishnoi, etc.
Jageri Temple» Jageri Hanumanji's temple is situated in Madh, 3 km away from Shri Kolayat. There is also a small cowshed and lake here and a garden.
Gurudwara Sahib» Guru Nanak Sahib's visit: Guru Nanak Sahib came to Kolayat towards the south during his second Udaasi. Here Guru ji had preached to some Jain people. They were called Dhundhiya. Guru Sahib preached to the Dhundhiya people at various places during his journey and this place is included in them. Dhundhiya people have an unhygienic habit of not bathing and keeping their mouth covered because they think that by bathing, creatures die due to body heat and this would be a great sin. But Guru Ji instructed them that one should be pure in heart, mind and soul but living in an unhygienic manner is not a pious act. It gives rise to various diseases and it is not safe for other human beings also. After this discourse all the Dhundhiya Jains stopped. Guru Ji came here from Bikaner and continued his journey to other parts of Rajasthan.
Chhatris of Jhajhu » The regional history contained in the inscriptions of Mudia script located in Chhatris of Jhajhu was made known. That two inscriptions installed in Jhajhu village reflect the time of Vikram Samvat approximately 1270 and 1342 which proves that Jhajhu was established even before Bikaner.

The in-laws of Rajasthan's folk deity Baba Ramdevji are in Amarkot, Pakistan. Now Naital Rani's parental home and folk deity Baba Ramdevji's in-laws' home will be built in Siyaana village of Kolayat tehsil of Bikaner district. Naital Rani's parental home will be built on two bighas of land. About seven crore rupees will be spent on this. It will be completed in four years and will be famous as a pilgrimage place.
