Both Newspapers.com and The Wikipedia Library would prefer that articles citing Newspapers.com link to clippings. Clippings allow Newspapers.com subscriber-editors to identify particular articles, extract them from the original full sheet newspaper and share them through unique URLs. Thus readers who click on a Newspapers.com Clipping link will be able to access that particular article, and the full page of the paper if they come from the clipping, without needing to subscribe to Newspapers.com. Clippings can be deleted by the user who created the clipping, but otherwise remain permanently open access, even when user accounts expire. The Wikipedia Library

Newspapers.com

Newspapers.com is a newspaper database in the family of companies associated with Ancestry.com. Their database includes more than 73 million pages from 3,000-plus newspapers, mostly local United States papers with some Canadian and elsewhere. (Lists: http://www.newspapers.com/papers/ and http://www.newspapers.com/browse/). It is particularly suited for Wikipedia content about the 18th, 19th and the first 34 of the 20th century in the United States and global topics affecting the United States. The collection includes some major newspapers for limited periods (i.e., 50 years of the New York Times), but mostly consists of regional papers from the 1700s onward. Very few titles go beyond the late 1980s. Free accounts through the Wikipedia Library do not include access to Newspapers.com Publisher Extra content.

As part of a pilot program with Wikipedia Library, they generously offered the use of 100 accounts to their database of American newspapers. Due to the success of the program and the large number of requests from users, they have since increased the number of accounts available to 400.

Using the Open Access "Clipping" function

For more information about how to use clippings, follow this link.

  2. ArmstrongJulian (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) After a hiatus I'm returning to content creation on Wikipedia, I usually focus on basketball articles related to Italy, I've worked on a number of American players from the 1970's (for example Chuck Jura, Warren Isaac) with newspapers.com containing a number of sources (often the only ones available) to help flesh out the articles. 3. Maile66 (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) I do a lot of article reviews, and more and more I find nominators are using this service. It would help me to see what they are using as a source, as well as help me in my content creation. — Maile (talk) 23:11, 14 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

HazelAB There is a problem. I can click on my account, so it shows me I'm signed in. I can change my account settings. It lets me search. Then it tells me I don't have a subscription to view the results. It wants me to click on "Free Trial offer" instead. — Maile (talk) 18:58, 21 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Maile66: It is a two-step process. Now that you have registered at Newspapers.com and filled in the Google form I will contact Customer Support at Newspapers.com and they will upgrade your account to full access. This should happen quickly but may take a few days. Once your account has been upgraded, you will have access for one year. By the way NewspaperArchive.com has similar registration system so there will be a short wait for that one too. HazelAB (talk) 19:12, 21 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
    Thank you. I guess I jumped ahead there. — Maile (talk) 19:13, 21 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  4. Leschnei (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) I have been doing a lot of copyediting and trying to add sources to unreferenced articles. Several searches have linked to Newspapers.com, so it would be very useful to have access. Leschnei (talk) 23:41, 26 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
