Are most of the subcategories here a good idea?[edit]

Plays about apartheid‎, that makes sense. But the others?

Are for example African-American plays‎ or Jewish American plays‎ by necessity about race and ethnicity? IMO, no.

Compare similar cats Category:Books about race and ethnicity and Category:Films about race and ethnicity. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 15:12, 8 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Agree, no. And, frankly I find just the idea totally weird that it must be a priori so. The authors in the subcategories write about a full universe of topics, which may include "race" and ethnicity-related themes—or not.
Unless one considers art that is written by minority artists or which portrays life in minority settings to be per se about "race and ethnicity", which is a pretty condescending thing to do. –Austronesier (talk) 15:46, 8 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The problem here seem to be in subcategories like Category:Jewish American plays or Category:African-American plays. Does a play have a race or ethnicity? No. The playwright does, not the play. Category:Jewish American plays really should be called Category:Plays by Jewish American authors. You could also separately have Category:Plays about Jewish Americans. And only the later should roll up into Category:Plays about race and ethnicity. The situation we have now results in Bullets Over Broadway (musical), which doesn't seem to have anything to do with Jews, rolling up into Category:Jewish American plays and then into Category:Plays about race and ethnicity. Thanks for the replies, I removed the subcats. I'll start a Cfd about Category:Works about race and ethnicity. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 20:13, 11 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
