NIMS University (formerly National Institute of Medical Sciences) is a self-financed medical and technical university located in Jaipur, Rajasthan, India.[2][3][4] It is recognized by University Grants Commission (UGC), established under the NIMS University Act 2008 by the government of India.[5] The university was founded by Prof. (Dr.) Balvir S. Tomar.[6] NIMS Medical College was ranked as the 5th emerging college in India by the India Today 2016 Nielsen Survey.[7]

History

Nims Group was founded in 2001 by Prof. (Dr.) Balvir S. Tomar, an alumnus of Harvard University and King's College London.[citation needed] The National Institute of Medical Sciences was founded as a venture of the Nims Group in 2002.[citation needed] Nims Group began additional ventures, including, Nims Dental College, Nims School of Nursing, Nims College of Pramedical Technology, Nims School of Physiotherapy &Occupational Therapy, Nims Institute of Pharmacy, Nims Institute of Management & Commerce, Nims Institute of Engineering and Technology ,Nims School of Design & Faishon Technology, Nims International School of Hotel Management, Nims School of Humanities & Social Sciences, Nims International Institute of Tourism & Aviation management, Nims Institute of Journalism & Mass Communication, Nims School of Law, Nims International School, national news channel News India 24*7, and Nims-Fluxlite LED Manufacturing Plant.[citation needed]

The various Nims Group schools were reorganized as Nims University under the Nims University Rajasthan, Jaipur Act, 2008, enacted by the Government of Rajasthan and recognized by the UGC.[expand acronym] The university is recognized by MCI, DCI, PCI, INC, BCI, and COA.[expand acronym][citation needed]

In 2014, satellite channel News India 24*7 was founded under Nims Group to provide current affairs information to the student body.[citation needed]

Nims university attracts students from across India and Overseas (e.g., Nigeria, South and North Sudan, Libya, Yamen, Iran, Iraq, Eretria, Djibouti, Congo, Somalia, Benin, Syria, Nepal, Bangladesh, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique).[citation needed]

Nims University won the Best Self-Financed University Award 2013 and CCI Technology Education Excellence Award 2014.[citation needed] Nims University was recognized as the best skill-development institute by the Government of India and ASSOCHAM.[expand acronym][citation needed] Nims University has received awards for Best Skill Development for two consecutive years, in 2015 and 2016.[citation needed] In 2017, Nims University was again awarded as Best Private University jointly by the Centre Education Growth and Research (CEGR). Clinics

Nims University's student medical clinics draw patients from a 250-kilometre radius (160 mi) of the university, providing free health care and treatment, and in certain cases free lodging, food and transportation.[citation needed] For efficiency, medical camps have been held in some villages.[citation needed]

NIMS Hospital, a super-specialty tertiary-care hospital, has sophisticated diagnostic and therapeutic facilities to provide treatment.[citation needed] The hospital's outpatient department attracts more than a thousand patients daily. Nims Hospital has been developed as a Nims super-specialty hospital with modern facilities for liver and kidney transplants, angiography, angioplasty, bypass surgery, valve-replacement surgery, laparoscopic stone removal, prostate surgery, dialysis, kidney transplant, knee/hip replacement, spinal surgery, neurosurgery, cornea transplant, lens replacement, infertility treatment, and in vitro fertilisation (IVF).[citation needed]

Six new super-specialty departments – Cardiology, Urology, Nephrology, IVF, NeuroSciences and Ophthalmology – have been added, with advanced facilities. The highlight of this super-specialty hospital is providing advanced tertiary-level treatment at a very low cost, lower than that of government hospitals.[citation needed][clarification needed]

The first successful liver transplant in Rajasthan was recently[when?] performed in the Nims Super-specialty Hospital.[citation needed]
