Western Region (Serbia)

Western Region (Serbian: Zapadni region/Западни регион) is a name of statistical region of Serbia formed in 2009. Serbian government will later define exact borders of this region. [1]

Between 1929 and 1941, the Drina Banovina was a province of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia named after the river Drina and consisting of parts of western Serbia and eastern Bosnia. The capital city of the province was Sarajevo, the present-day capital city of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
In 1941 Yugoslav Partisans liberated the large territory of German occupied western Serbia. In this territory they proclaimed the Republic of Užice (Uzička Republika) with Užice city as centre of the Republic. This large free territory was island of freedom in Nazi occupied Europe. Republic of Užice lived a short life. Very soon, German troops occupied this territory again, while the majority of Partisan forces escaped towards Bosnia.
[edit] Former proposals for creation of this region
Before formation of this statistical region in 2009, there was several proposals for creation of new administrative units in this area. Most notable proposals were made by the Democratic Party of Serbia and League For Šumadija (Šumadija Coalition).
