Samuel Inkoom (born June 1, 1989 in Sekondi-Takoradi) is a Ghanaian professional footballer, who currently plays as a defender for Ukrainian club FC Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk in the Ukrainian Premier League and the Ghana national team.
Career
Club
Inkoom began his career with Sekondi Hasaacas, here stayed 2007 in the Premiership All Star team[2] and moved on 1 January 2008 to Asante Kotoko and was linked in summer 2008 with a move to Barcelona FC.[3]
On 26 April 2009 he moved for $700,000 [4] from Kumasi Asante Kotoko to FC Basel in the Swiss Super League[5] on a three-year contract.[6] He made his Basel debut in a 2–0 defeat to FC St. Gallen on July 12, 2009, at the AFG Arena.[7] He was a key member of their double trophy winning team in 2010 . On 23 January 2011 he moved for $10,000,000 to FC Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk. On 30 October 2011 in a league game against FC Karpaty Lviv, Inkoom received a yellow card for taking his shirt off while leaving the pitch to be substituted by Evgeniy Shakhov. This was Inkoom's second yellow card of the game and he received a red card and Shakhov could not come on.[8] His side were able to hold out for the 2-0 away win though.[9]
- On 2 November 2011, Inkoom had expressed his desire to leave FC Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk during the 2012 January transfer window to safeguard his career and confessed that his regrets leaving his former club FC Basel.
"It's cold," the young Ghanaian told Goal.com. "Things are not easy for me here in Ukraine. Some ugly things have happened.
"I had problems with our coach, Juande Ramos. He would not let me leave to join the Ghana national team. And that was even when we were only in the pre-season and Ghana were in qualifiers for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations.
"The coach threatened to sign another winger-defender if I were to go. But even so, I had to play for Ghana. This is my home, no one can forbid me [from playing for the Black Stars]".
International
The right defender is a former member of the Black Satellites, he played with the team at 2009 African Youth Championship in Rwanda,[11] he was with the Black Starlets the Championship Winner.[12] Inkoom played his first game for the senior side Black Stars on 20 November 2008 against Tunisia.[13] He got his first chance with Ghana's squad for the South Africa 2010 qualifier against Benin on 28 March which they won 1–0. Inkoom formerly was member of the Black Starlets,[14] he was in the extended squad for the 2005 FIFA U-17 World Championship in Peru,[15] he was not nominated for the tournament. After that, Inkoom aided Ghana in winning the 2009 FIFA U-20 World Cup by holding Brazil to a 0–0 score for 120' and then when the game went into a penalty shootout, Inkoom took the second one for Ghana and scored giving Ghana the victory.
Inkoom made his World Cup debut on 26 June 2010, starting on the right wing against the United States in a Last-16 knockout game, which Ghana won 2–1 in extra time.
