Battle for Arrakis[edit]

The Amiga port was also known as Battle for Arrakis at least in Europe. I don't know about Merka. JIP | Talk 09:37, 17 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Battle for Arakis and Building of a Dynasty are NOT simply different names, but substancial improvement steps. Main exemple being you could use your tank to roll on Fremen in one version, while you could not in the other, and the radar operator in one of them initially told you, for example "Ordos unit approching from the north!" for the first two assault waves while the other version never added the orgin of the attackers. 132.204.243.254 (talk) 22:08, 4 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Image rendering in Firefox[edit]

I have no idea why, but the image Image:Dune2intro.png in the intro doesn't render properly in firefox, although it is fine with opera and ie. Anyone got any ideas regarding a solution to this? Jacoplane 07:45, 28 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Deviator Cheat[edit]

Where is all the trivia information about the bugs of the game? The article had a large list of interesting bugs. Why delete interesting information? Lazy form-before-content noobs... to hell if I am ever contributing to this damn wiki again. (7 may 2007, just somebody)

Repair + Carryall[edit]

A hidden (?) feature is to surround your repair facility with a wall. This will make the carryall fly the repaired vehicles back to the battle (usefuly only if you have the superior force, late in the game).

Infinite credits?[edit]

In the past my favourite was the long-term 'starvation' tactic, that is, letting the AI costantly send units into my wall of rocket turrets. Once the stream of units stopped, that meant that the AI has spent everything and so couldn't put up a defense (or repair buildings) when I attacked. So the 'infinite credits' accusation is false.

I replayed it this week, going for a fast, perfectionist strategy that consisted of quickly deploying 4+ harvesters and then carryalls to speed it up even more. Yet after each mission, statistics said that the opponent was able to match my spice income pretty well. Which is kinda surprising because every time there was only one refinery with a single harvester in the opponent's base. Thus it appears that the AI receives more credits for harvested spice than the player does.

It also seems that the AI begins with an already built base, so it doesn't need to invest credits into base construction. --theultramage 11:42, 20 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sega Genesis cheats[edit]

I havent played the game for other platforms, but i know that there are some biult in cheats for the genesis version

You just enter in one of the special cheats into the password box (which is normally used to load games)

Sardaukar captured tech[edit]

I think it should be added that both the Atreides and Harkonnen special units can be constructed from a captured Sardaukar heavy factory.

Also, though I don't know if this breaks the original research rule, I know from experience that the Ordos Deviator turns any unit it hits to ORDOS side, instead of the side of the unit that hit it. This makes capturing Ordos weapons factory to construct the Deviator uttterly useless. (apparently the WW team knew this, as the unit can't be built when capturing the Sardaukar factory)

I don't know if a similar tech mix applies to a captured Sardaukar Light factory, which theoretically could allow the player to build the Ordos-specific Raider Trike.

In which case, the comment I added regarding a deviator deviating itself is wrong. I am convinced I have ended up successfully using a deviator which fell into its own nerve gas while I was Atreides. I was playing DOS version of the original DUNE 2 (not 2000).

Credits rollover bug[edit]

It's apparent that the variable used to hold the player's score display is a single byte, signed integer value. When your credits hit 64K (binary K, not 64,000) the counter rolls over and displays garbage data. If the value were unsigned (for positive numbers only), it could hold/display a number up to 256K. This is due to a signed integer using one bit soley to indicate positive or negative.

SEGA version[edit]

I've tried playing the SEGA version on an emulator and it's very difficult due to the much lower maximum number of units permitted on each map. I have trouble having enough units built to both defend my base and attack the enemy base. When the player wins on each map, a flight of Carryalls flies up the screen in an inverted chevron formation.

HP Calculator version?[edit]

I once found a ROM image supposedly for 'Dune II' for a Hewlett Packard HP 48 or HP 49 calculator. I got the image file to load into an HP calculator emulator, but there was no instructions included with the ROM file so I could never figureout how to run/launch/execute the game program.

Deviated unit in repair facility[edit]

A few days ago, I added the following line to chapter on AI:

  • If you put a deviated unit in a repair facility, the deviated effect never wears off, so the unit stays yours.

However, now I notice this is not so much an AI bug as a bug in the game itself. If anyone knows a better place where to put this, please let me know or fix it yourself.

Unfair Criticism[edit]

It doesn't seem unfair at all to any of you that Dune 2 pretty much pioneered RTS games as they are today and is a 15 year old game with no proper predecessor. The criticisms are so ridiculously stupid, I don't remember anyone criticising it at the time for much of the crap that's mentioned in the article at all. Anyone?

Interface (Grouping Units)[edit]

The article currently reads that you could not group units. This is untrue. To group units, you would pick one to be the lead unit, and then tell your other units to move to the lead unit. First?[edit]

The article currently says that Dune II:

"was the first to use the mouse to move units, allowing players to fluidly interact with their troops"

I've played The Ancient Art of War at Sea (1987, or 5 years older than Dune II, according to their respective Wikipedia articles), and it definitely allowed using the mouse to move units.

Fan Mods - Super Dune 2 and Super Dune 2 Classic[edit]

What about Super Dune 2? Do you think this mod should find it's way into this article?
