Untitled[edit]

This page should be deleted for the time being. There is nearly no information on this device or whether it actually exists. Furthermore, the "official" Verizon site listed on the page is a hoax and is not owned by Verizon Wireless. —Preceding unsigned hljk added by Jgw (talkcontribs) 08:11, 2 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The Passion exists as an HTC device[1] (rumors are split between VZW going with either Nexus One or Passion branding), but the Bravo certainly exists- it uses the same hardware as the Nexus One, only a slightly different form factor (changed hard buttons, optical instead of trackball, uses HTC SenseUI instead of Android's default UI, etc), and was officially announced for Europe. I believe it should be changed to HTC Bravo (HTC's own name for this device) or do something consistent with the HTC Touch Pro/Fuze/Raphael article. Passion is specific to Verizon's CMDA-based variant of this device. It seems that there will be a ton of similar HTC hardware (similar case, snapdragon CPU, OLED WVGA capacitive touchscreen, etc) running Android under many different names- that's not including the variants that run Windows Mobile (Leo/HD2). Even the some of the HTC fanatics at xda-developers are confused by HTC's naming[2]. Corneliusm (talk) 18:43, 11 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The Nexus One is the HTC Dragon, not the Passion. Leaked pictures show the Passion is a very different-looking device from the N1. 75.16.189.30 (talk) 02:37, 15 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have reason to believe that that picture is not what was known as a Passion. --Alvestrand (talk) 05:39, 15 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Verizon has confirmed it is taking the HTC Passion. The article used to have a link to Verizon's page (here), but someone deleted it from the article. So we know it's a real phone. We know it will be on Verizon. The news and technology publications are giving a lot of coverage to the Passion and the Bravo, its other name (Google search) No point deleting the article.--Lester 21:39, 17 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
You got a source for that? PDAdb identifies the Passion as the Bravo, and HTC's own roadmap shows the Bravo as something that looks nothing like the Nexus One. 75.16.189.30 (talk) 01:33, 21 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
By the way, I would support renaming this article HTC Bravo and scrubbing all references to the word "Passion", since there's so much crystal-balling on what the name "Passion" means. HTC's own roadmap confirms there's a device called the Bravo, what the Bravo's basic specs are (including that it's a GSM/HSPA device), and that the Bravo does not resemble the Nexus One externally. 75.16.189.30 (talk) 01:49, 21 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
After doing some more looking around, there's a lot of confusion on what the name "Passion" refers to. It could be the Bravo, the Nexus One, or a Verizon CDMA version of the Nexus One. After this, I'd strongly suggest renaming the article HTC Bravo, as we've at least got a picture of the bravo and confirmation of specs, while we still don't know what the Passion is. 75.16.189.30 (talk) 20:23, 13 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
HTC announced this phone at the World Mobile Congress now. It is officially named HTC Desire (codename HTC Bravo), and is kind of the equivalent of the Nexus One. It is neither the HTC Passion (which I belive was the codename for the Nexus One), nor the HTC Dragon (which was leaked to be released in Q2 in China). 91.1.121.234 (talk) 14:25, 16 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, after reading the MWC news, I'm renaming this to HTC Bravo. I'll make HTC Desire a dab page covering this and the Droid Eris, and I'll turn HTC Passion into a redirect to Nexus One. Btw, I am 75.16.189.30; I just don't log in often anymore. By the way, after reading that Dopod roadmap, I now believe the Dragon will be the TD-SCDMA version of the Bravo. jgpTC 15:13, 16 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

This section is now seriously out-dated and should be removed. Owen 15:01, 1 October 2010 (UTC)

We don't remove sections because they are outdated. People will see that by the datestamps anyway. We could archive it but I fail to see a good reason to. Regards SoWhy 15:09, 1 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Untitled 2[edit]

The Desire has lost all references to 720p "HD" recording.

Mobile Tech World had this to say after an interview with HTC; [[3]]

The only new piece of info I got was about the rumored DivX playback and 720P encoding capabilities of the HTC Desire (aka HTC Bravo). The answer I got was that DivX support will be added in a future update (they didn’t say much about 720P support but from the way it sounded it should be coming in the same update) because they didn’t have time to finalise the feature before launching the handset.

Loads of reviews say this only records in 800x480? Yet the page here says 720p... where else does it say it can record 720p? I would have expected to see some example videos on the likes of youtube etc - but no. 81.6.244.121 (talk) 22:46, 29 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Slashgear seems to have got a 8GB SD Card, the final device has yet to be delivered but 4GB is still possible. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.20.239.130 (talk) 22:51, 21 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

When i bought mine it had a 4GB card bundled with it (shop in Germany, device only without carrier contract) ThatDeathWithTheCold (talk) 08:34, 25 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Screen[edit]

Since this has now shipped, I was wondering if anyone could clarify if the screen is protected by a toughened glass (like the iPhone), or wether is has a more plastic screen (like the Nokia 5800).

Definitely more iPhone-like. I have had all 3 phones, and while the iphone feels more solid this isn't far behind it.150.101.189.145 (talk) 05:54, 26 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Does the Desire have the same PenTile RGBG screen as the Nexus One? --204.56.252.192 (talk) 20:59, 7 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

CDMA,USCELLULAR[edit]

Images[edit]

Have a couple of non-copyvio images that can be added. I believe that replacing the current copyrighted press image in in line with WP:RAT Shritwod (talk) 07:59, 11 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Network Speed[edit]

Can anyone add a clarification as to what the maximum download and upload speed are for this device are using WCDMA and HSDPA? For example on the iPhone page it mentions that the 3GS has 7.2Mbps. What rate is the Desire capable of? Handheldpenguin (talk) 11:49, 8 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Form factor/Type[edit]

I am puzzled as to why the iPhone article lists its 'Type' as a Slate smartphone (|type=Slate smartphone) whereas this article lists the Desire's 'Form factor' as a Candybar smartphone. Reading the Wiki definition for slate Bar_(form)#Slate the Desire clearly also fits the 'slate' form factor as it has very few buttons other than the virtual buttons on the touch screen. For this reason I propose changing the Desire listing to read 'slate', and the iPhone listing to read 'form factor'. Owen :-P 06:29, 4 July 2010 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Djapa84 (talkcontribs)

Yes I would interpret 'candybar' to mean it has a physical keypad below the screen. 136.186.72.46 (talk) 07:28, 16 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Froyo?[edit]

When will HTC make available the Android update to 2.2 for the Desire? 213.112.133.38 (talk) 10:48, 18 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

HTC has said in the third quarter of 2010 but no further details are known at this time. You might want to check relevant forums like Androidforums.com instead though since Wikipedia is not a forum. Regards SWM (SoWhy[on]Mobile) 10:35, 19 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I received the following in an email from HTC on 28JUL10: "Thank you for contacting HTC. We are working closely with Google and our other partners to ensure we have the earliest access to everything we need to provide a complete and solid Sense experience on Froyo. We expect to release all updates in the second half of this year but can't be more specific yet." Owen :-P 14:57, 30 July 2010 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Djapa84 (talkcontribs)

HTC confirmed that Froyo will be released on the Desire in Europe this weekend, see [4]. I'll add it to the article. Regards SoWhy 18:17, 30 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I'm in South Africa and I got my Froyo update, so I guess that "Europe" actually refers to "EMEA", but I can't see any official statement on this anywhere. GraemeDonaldson (talk) 10:10, 2 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Still no Froyo from Telstra Australia and I am getting tired of not being able to install apps on my memory card. C'mon Telstra - you are letting Sth Africa have one up on us and that is no good. Owen 08:55, 1 October 2010 (UTC)

AMOLED Screen?[edit]

Due to supply issues, HTC has started using Sony LCD screens instead of Samsung AMOLED screens [5] [6]. I'm not entirely sure if they're doing it in the US, but they definitely are in Canada. So, the question is, should the article just list the original specification (AMOLED), the new one for production ("Super LCD"), or both? (Personally, my suggestion would be both) 209.90.135.227 (talk) 02:46, 10 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Just one more link, because it doesn't make it sound like it's just a Telus thing: [7]. 209.90.135.227 (talk) 04:48, 10 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

"Powered by"?[edit]

To me it sounds a bit strange to say that a device is 'powered' by a particular cpu. It sounds like advertisement-speak, as in "Powered by Windows (TM)". I changed it to something more neutral. 188.126.207.212 (talk) 05:52, 12 August 2010 (UTC) I agree. The Desire is powered by a Lithium Ion battery. The processor uses power, so lets not use marketing speak. Djapa Owen 10:04, 7 March 2011 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Djapa84 (talkcontribs) [reply]

Infobox image[edit]

Which image should be used in the infobox? SoWhy 07:07, 13 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Comment: I think we should use File:Htc-desire-2.jpg for the infobox but at least one user vehemently disagrees and removes it to replace it with File:HTC Desire.jpg. I think the image without the hand holding the phone should be preferable to the other one since it does not obscure the edges of the phone in question and also simply looks more appealing. Obviously, not everyone agrees, so I wanted to start a discussion here in order to achieve consensus. Regards SoWhy 06:57, 13 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I created File:Htc-desire-2.jpg and File:Htc-desire-1.jpg for use in Wikipedia, so they could be re-licensed for use under Creative Commons. As is the convention for this type of device, I show a Wikipedia page for the homescreen rather than anything that might violate copyright. The image was shot in as close to studio conditions as I can manage and then cleaned up. Naturally, I'm a bit biased towards the image, but I do think that it meets all the criteria. There's no problem with having a gallery with lots of different CC licenced images though. Shritwod (talk) 22:16, 13 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm. This is actually a tricky one. I was the one who first set the picture to File:Htc-desire-2.jpg (before that, it was a fair-use image that had the same filename as the colourful one now being considered).
Both images certainly have their merits:
  • File:Htc-desire-2.jpg looks more professional and encyclopedic.
  • File:HTC Desire.jpg is more generally attractive. It captivates the reader a bit more. It also gives at least a slight impression of size.
Encyclopedic is good. On the other hand, the goal is to make articles that are good for the reader. I don't think the colourful one really has the edges obscured, and it really does look nicer. The problem is the reflection in the colourful one. If it didn't have that reflection, I'd say it was the one to go with. However, it does have that slightly distracting reflection. So, I think I'd suggest File:Htc-desire-2.jpg. 209.90.134.51 (talk) 04:58, 14 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Note: We are only talking about the infobox now. The other image will be left in the gallery, no matter the outcome of this discussion (unless consensus is to remove one image completely), so for example the purpose of seeing how big the phone is could still be served by having File:HTC Desire.jpg in the gallery. Regards SoWhy 09:02, 14 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think we should have a discussion about whether the image is "appealing" or "nicer". It's too subjective.
My opinion is to go back to the original copyrighted image. This serves both purposes of encyclopediac and professional. Also having the image File:Htc-desire-2.jpg at an awkward angle and not showing the Sense UI defeats the informational purpose. Showing the Sense UI would not violate copyright otherwise we would have no images of the device at all.
However, to help a consensus, if Shritwod or User:209.90.134.51 could re-take the a vertical image of the device with Sense UI (perhaps with as a composite to show the back as well if possible) then I will have no objections.--Darth007 (talk) 16:21, 14 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Please remember that per NFCC 1, regardless of quality, that we never allow non-free images of subjects of which free images exist. Just a few months ago, he snuck the non-free image back in. ViperSnake151  Talk  15:40, 7 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Overheating issues[edit]

I have been having problems with my desire overheating and shutting down. When it does so it keeps trying to re-boot and failing because it is not getting a chance to cool down until the battery is pulled out. I have looked at various forums (xda developers etc) and found a number of others having the same problem. Do people think this is worth adding to the page here? I would certainly think twice because I live in a warm climate (the problem only happens above about 25 degrees C). Djapa Owen 10:10, 7 March 2011 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Djapa84 (talkcontribs)

I have mine since June and I have not experienced such problems, even with more than 30°C outside (although the battery is empty faster). Possibly you have overclocked the device or it's a result of a custom ROM you installed? Adding it here requires some reliable sources to confirm it and I have not found any. Regards SoWhy 10:43, 7 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I assure you that if I had installed a custom ROM or overclocked it I would have said so as that would be very relevant. It is the standard TELSTRA unit with the factory OTA upgrade to Froyo. The problem existed before and after the upgrade so is not a result of that. I am not sure about reliable sources but here are a few links:

http://androidforums.com/desire-support-troubleshooting/184577-desire-overheating-restarting.html http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=676402&highlight=overheat http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=675810&highlight=reboot http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KLl9Q5ur9Oc http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LkWmsZ36Gh0 Djapa Owen 13:21, 7 March 2011 (UTC)

I question the reliability of some of those links. For instance, in the second one, the author goes out of his/her way to state that the phone is unmodded, but in his/her signature it clearly states that the phone is running Cyanogen 7.
I've had a Desire for almost a year and the summers regularly get into the mid-30s or more where I live. Never had the slightest heating problem, and my phone has never rebooted (except when upgrading to Froyo, of course). If you want to include something like that in the page it definitely needs a reliable citation that clearly shows these incidents aren't isolated.Acidtoyman (talk) 08:15, 9 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Android 2.3 / Gingerbread update[edit]

There's currently a citation needed tag attached to the mention of the future availability of an Android 2.3 update for the Desire. The availability is mentioned here and here, but I'm a bit of an editing noob, so I'm not sure if either of these are valid sources for citation. Comments? GraemeDonaldson (talk) 11:57, 10 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

There is nothing about it on the HTC website, and until they or a carrier give some sort of timeline anything else is basically speculation isn't it? Djapa Owen 12:34, 10 March 2011 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Djapa84 (talkcontribs)
Couldn't a person put "yada yada is rumoured/speculated to be released yada yada"? You'd have citations for the speculations.Acidtoyman (talk) 05:42, 11 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

"Jesusphone"? Can someone please explain this?[edit]

https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/w/index.php?title=Jesusphone&redirect=no — Preceding unsigned comment added by 109.100.174.136 (talk) 00:30, 25 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Looks like some iPhone-basher did that. A Google search returns hits calling the iPhone the "Jesusphone", although another search for "jesusphone htc" gets hits for people claiming HTC's phones will become the "true" Jesusphone. Clearly the term currently refers to the iPhone, though. CüRlyTüRkeyTalkContribs 00:56, 25 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It appears that it was redirected from the iPhone to the Desire a few days ago. It's plainly obvious from a Google search that the "Jesusphone" term relates to the iPhone, so I reverted it. Shritwod (talk) 07:36, 25 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Carriers[edit]

The "Carriers" section seems a ridiculous concept to me - is the idea to list every single carrier in the world that carries this cellphone? If so, this list is going to end up ridiculously long. What are the criteria for a carrier to be listed here? Geqo (talk) 06:35, 16 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Known Issue of deleting all text messages - beware I have just found out the hard way that this phone has a habit of clearing your inbox and the issue has been known about by HTC for some time - they recommend installing a SMSbackup program but you only find out about this once its too late, maybe this could be included here.... — Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.101.241.166 (talk) 18:30, 23 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Availability[edit]

Like the Carriers comment above, the Availability section is quite outdated now as this model is superceded and so none of those carriers would sell it any more. As for the ludicousity of putting in avalability in the lower left corner of south west Kentucky, that was just plain silly from the start. I suggest we delete the whole availability section as it is wasting space in a good article on a groundbreaking smartphone. Any objections?
