Exports[edit]

It is my understanding that the Caprice, not the Statesman is the model used for all overseas exports. As the Caprice is a stand alone model, it is my belief that this article should be re-written to reflect this and the references moved to the Caprice Page. --Simmons001 11:03, 8 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Both the Caprice and Statesman are exported, and their sales numbers mirror closely those seen in Australia. THe Carpice is no more a stand alone model than the Calias is to the Commodore. In fact, the argument exists to merge the two together, and have a seperate heading under the statesman page to outline the Caprice. Decromin 14:22, 15 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Having come back to this page after some absence, i must disagree. A Calais is no more a Commodore, than a Falcon is. It is a Calais. It may have the same body as the Commodore, but has unique trim, badging etc and is called a Holden Calais, not a Holden Commodore Calais. The Caprice and Statesman, again whilst sharing the same body type, are unique models as per docs/brochures etc in the Holden line up. Opinions all? Daewoo Statesman now redirects here.[edit]

I just changed the Daewoo Statesman article to redirect here. The original content of that article is included below just in case there is any information there that can usefully be placed into this article.

Original content:

The Daewoo Statesman is a full-size luxury automobile built by Holden Ltd., General Motors' Australian subsidiary, in Elizabeth, South Australia. It is a modified version of the Holden Statesman, and has been marketed in South Korea by GM Daewoo since the summer of 2005. It is the largest rear-wheel drive sedan offered by General Motors.

The GM Daewoo Statesman was launched in 2005 initially with a new 3.6L V6 Alloytec engine, with the 2.8L to follow. Manufacturing began in 2005, with the same engines, sold through the GM Daewoo network as the Daewoo Statesman.

Photo on Holden Statesman page is a Statesman Caprice[edit]

The photo on the Holden Statesman page shows a WB Statesman Caprice, which was not marketed as a Holden. The inclusion of the photo on this page only serves to muddy the waters between the Holden Statesman (VQ onwards) and the Statesman (HQ to WB). I feel that it should be removed. Series Wrong[edit]

There doesn't seem to be any mention of the earlier series of cars sold by Holden called Caprice and Statesman, based on the Kingswood initially, and then a custom platform until 1983. Theducks 01:38, 4 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Intro[edit]

Ive added the word "commonly" to Caprices are commonly powered by V8 engines rather than V6s, as the V6 was optional in all Caprice models, the V8 however was the usual and standard engine Simmons001 (talk) 10:59, 17 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have edited this statement as its confusing. "Caprices are commonly powered by V8 engines rather than V6s, and are fully specified version of their Statesman siblings." IMHO and as per Holden docs/brochures the Caprice and Statesman are two different models in this era and this statement insinuates that you can option or specify a Statesman to Caprice levels of trim and equipment, which simply isn't the case, i.e. you can't specify the wood trim in the Statesman, nor the 12 speaker stereo, rear seat stereo controls etc etc. Secondly, Caprice's did have options. i.e in the VS S1 there were three. LSD, Sunroof, 185kW Engine Upgrade. Hopefully I've made this a bit clearer. Simmons001 (talk) 07:43, 28 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Holden Statesman → Holden Caprice — The Statesman and Caprice are the same car except that the Statesman is the lower-spec model and Caprice is the higher spec version. Both models were introduced concurrently in 1990, but the Statesman was discontinued in August 2010. "Caprice" is also the international export name for the car under the Chevrolet brand in the Middle East and North America (WP:Common name). These three articles are about the Australian-built models, compare for example Chevrolet Caprice, and the export versions accounted for relatively few sales and were not nearly so notable as the locally sold cars, whose iconic status was and is far greater than their sales indicate. The export versions were not even called Holden, so the proposed names for the series-specific articles are completely wrong. Maybe it was not clear above, but the Statesman no longer exists (it has been discontinued so that only the Holden Caprice is sold now). The Caprice has replaced the Statesman and a new "Caprice V-Series" model occupies the former Caprice role. As far as I am aware, Holden has not advertised the Statesman since the 2003 WK model; only Caprices have featured in advertisements. Prior to the deletion of the Statesman model, the Caprice in Australia "outsold the Statesman almost three-to-one for the past few years". Since Middle East exports commenced in 1999, that market immediately overtook Australia as the largest customer for these long-wheelbase cars, and just before the GFC were five times higher than local sales. Holden in Australia sold 3,076 Statesman/Caprices in 2006, while Chevrolet in the Middle East sold 19,438 Caprices in 2005. That may be true of the older models, but how many WM Statesmans do you see in comparison to the Caprice equivalent? The far lower sales figures of the Statesman models is exactly the reason why that model has been deleted. The same applies for advertising; Statesman advertising was retired early last decade in favour of exclusive coverage for the Caprice (which is purchased by far more private buyers (although that is not saying much) in comparison to the Statesman which had become the "Omega/Executive" of the long-wheelbase range). In five years time when the Statesman will be long gone, the article will be inaccurately titled as the name would only apply to the 1990 through to 2010 models. Internationally, "Caprice" is more common as it is the export name (this will be especially true when U.S. police car sales commence).
Based on WP:Article titles:
  • Recognizability – Both titles are recognised by most people in Australia. The cessation of Statesman advertising since the 2003 WK model may have had some affect at making "Caprice" more recognisable, but this is impossible to justify. The "Statesman" title will not be recognisable for future models as those models will not be known as "Statesman".
  • Naturalness – The "Statesman" title will not be the "natural" title for future models as those models will not be known as "Statesman". "Caprice" is a natural title for all models.
  • Precision – Both "Statesman" and "Caprice" are equally as precise for the 1990 through to 2010 models, but only "Caprice" will be precise for future models.

Motorcade!! and overseas police agencies[edit]

Should info about the Holden Caprice being the car of choice for the PM's motorcade be included and the fact that it is starting to be used as police cars in mid east and NA

Some current generation models ordered but unsold to American police departments have been sold at auction on eBay, complete with all the wiring hookups for police radios and other equipment, extra police package interior and trunk lighting plus other special equipment. Just add police electronics, drill holes for a spotlight and light bar, apply police decals and it's a police car. Bizzybody (talk) 10:45, 8 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

2004 V8 WL auto[edit]

An anon-ip added the "incorrect clause in this sentence. "The V8s received a stronger GM 4L65-E automatic transmission(This is incorrect, the 2004 V8 WL statesman came with the 4l60E (M30 rpo code)), while the Alloytec V6 versions received a new five-speed GM 5L40-E automatic." I reverted it because it is schizophrenic to say one thing and to then contradict ourselves immediately. Does anybody know which is correct? Beware that 2004 might mean calendar year (mid 2004 to mid-2005) or US style model year (mid-2003 to mid-2004).  Stepho  talk  09:45, 17 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
