Pick #[edit]

Should we look at pick #, and add it in the table? Basketball110 what famous people say 19:38, 23 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

"Unofficial" rookies of the year[edit]

Recently, I came across a reference (see the second paragraph of [1] and the first section of that link titled "1951-52 NBA Co-Rookie of the Year") that mentions some unofficial BAA / NBA rookies of the year that predate Don Meineke. One can find additional references to these unofficial Rookies of the Year (for example) at sites such as [2] and books such as:

  • Schumacher, Michael (2008). Mr. Basketball: George Mikan, the Minneapolis Lakers, and the Birth of the NBA. United States: Univ Of Minnesota Press. p. 274. ISBN 0816656754. {{cite book}}: Invalid |ref=harv (help)

In the interest of completeness, is there any support for including the listing the unofficial rookies of the year (obviously with some indicator that they are not officially sanctioned by the NBA, albeit with some open dispute) in this article? — Myasuda (talk) 13:23, 23 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe including them in a separate section?—Chris!c/t 18:10, 23 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I think it would be worthwhile to mention them somewhere, especially since it appears that a few older NBA annual guides did include them. Zagalejo^^^ 01:19, 24 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I might be able to get my hands on one of those old NBA guides later this week, so I can see for myself. Zagalejo^^^ 01:21, 24 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I have an NBA guide from the 1970s and neither this guide (which I re-checked) nor any of the others I used to own from the 1970s and 1980s (to my recollection) listed rookies of the year prior to Meineke. So the existence of these other rookie of the years was a surprising revelation to me as well . . . and so these earlier rookie awards don't appear to be something that used to be standard and was later dropped. Like the other participants in this discussion, I do support including them somewhere in the article. — Myasuda (talk) 02:00, 24 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I saw it in the 1994 NBA encyclopedia. Just the list with no other prose that I could see (its an 800 page book). I added a ref in the article.—Bagumba (talk) 02:44, 14 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Cool. Thanks for looking into that! Zagalejo^^^ 03:14, 14 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
As a minority viewpoint, I would suggest listing them in text only (not in table) with a brief summary and not giving it WP:UNDUE weight. Its the NBAs award, so I suppose they can choose who they want or dont want to recognize.—Bagumba (talk) 01:23, 24 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Well, it appears from the Baltimore Sun article here (which Zagalejo linked at the WT:NBA page) that the NBA did recognize them originally, but forgot about it at one point. I think we should include them. oknazevad (talk) 05:15, 24 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
And then according to the other source, the NBA has not listed them since the one year in 1995. —Bagumba (talk) 05:47, 24 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with all, list them according to the sources. Anyway, this is interesting and makes me wonders, are there any other "forgotten" awards like this. —

Howie Shannon[edit]

You are invited to join the discussion at Talk:1949 BAA Draft#Howie Shannon. Shannon was unofficial ROY in 1948–49, but sources show he was drafted in 1949. —Bagumba (talk) 07:11, 14 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Contradiction[edit]

This article lists Oscar Robertson as a #1 pick but the article on Territorial Picks says he was territorial. Statalyzer (talk) 09:33, 15 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I fixed it. Robertson was a unique case as he was both the 1st overall pick and a territorial pick.—Chris!c/t 19:44, 15 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Paul Hoffman draft pick[edit]

The addition that Hoffman was drafted with the 42nd pick is dubious. Realgm.com seems to be the only source that lists pick numbers for anything other than the 1st round for the year's draft. Per 1947 BAA draft, it was a joint draft with the NBL, and the 1st round was exclusively for the BAA in exchange for the NBL not exposing some players to the draft. RealGM I think just assumed each round had the same draft order of only BAA teams, and incorrectly reverse-engineered the pick numbers for the subsequent rounds. I'm going to remove this from Hoffman.—Bagumba (talk) 10:46, 16 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • I found the link by basketball-reference.com that says what was probably the proper order of the 1947 BAA Draft. Apparently, he was the 70th pick of the draft that year, and if RealGM is correct with the amount of picks in certain rounds, he was also taken in the 8th round instead of the 5th round. Here's the link, and it's probably for the best to make your own conclusions in that regard. – AGreatPhoenixSunsFan (talk) 17:44, 5 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Missing info on process - When is voting?[edit]

The article should say when is the deadline for voting and when are results announced? Does performance in the playoffs count at all? Or are the votes due before the playoffs begin? JimLuckett (talk) 16:31, 6 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
