Scam accusations[edit]

Recent anonymous edits have been leveling accusations of fraud at RTG and at Tornquist personally, which I think warrants a measured response:

  • First of all, "scam" means "an attempt to defraud a person or group after first gaining their trust". The accusations are based on the fact that some backers of Dreamfall Chapters (including myself; full disclosure: I am a $750-level backer) have not yet received some of the physical rewards. However, a) the main product of the Kickstarter campaign was the game itself, which has been delivered to all backers digitally in 2016, and b) most backers have since received their physical rewards, judging by independent reports on the forums and in other KS comments. Knowing these facts, RTG's actions can be judged, at most, incompetent in handling backer rewards, but not fraudulent.
  • Secondly, the claim that "June pack" was never mentioned on KS is factually incorrect: it was, in fact, referenced in the very KS update cited as "proof" of a "scam" (specifically: "The deadline has passed but it's not too late: we are planning a follow-up shipment before summer"). The complaint that "physical rewards should have been delivered 6 years before that" doesn't hold any merit, either, since the developers have been transparent in previous updates about the circumstances that brought about this six-year delay. The gross miscalculation of delivery time should likewise be attributed to incompetency in handling rewards, rather than fraud.
  • Thirdly, the "sources" cited to back up accusations of fraud are mostly Kickstarter comments, which, while probably made in good faith, do not meet the reliability guidelines Wikipedia has for references – especially for those pertaining to serious accusations. Furthermore, extrapolating a "scam" narrative from primary sources (some of which may have been self-published) may constitute original research.

Lastly, while I understand from first-hand experience your frustration at not having received the rewards you've paid for, Wikipedia is not your soapbox to vent this frustration. --Koveras (talk) 19:44, 25 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
