Eponym error[edit]

There has for a long time been confusion about which of the many Bartholins should be credited with what, but the salivary duct is (I think) named not for Rasmus (as this article now states) but (like the vestibular glands) for Caspar the Younger-- this certainly was the view of the 1911 Britannica, and is currently the view of the whonamedit site. Better say nothing than be wrong-- I have deleted the reference.

Alicorn quote[edit]

This chapter from a book published in 1930 says the following:

Thomas Bartholinus certainly exaggerates the influence of the Danish discovery when he implies that it stopped the traffic in narwhal tusks. "Our merchants would have filled whole ships with this pretended horn", says he, "and would have sold it all through Europe as true alicorn, if the deceit had not been detected by experts."

I am inexperienced with history research and would like to know a good tactic about how to go about verifying if that quote is real or not. I am trying to track down the etymology of the word alicorn and find records of who said it and when to make a timeline. Cob (talk) 04:08, 27 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I am guessing, if he made that statement, that it would probably be found in the book De Unicornu Observationes Novae. If not found there then it could possibly be in his correspondence, which is soon to be published including a complete English translation (see here). --Saddhiyama (talk) 14:25, 27 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
