Early life and education
[edit]Tommy Cash was born Tomas Tammemets in Tallinn, Estonia. He is reportedly of mixed ethnic Estonian, Kazakh, Russian and Ukrainian ancestry.[2][3] Cash has described himself as Estonian first and foremost, then "Eastern European in his soul", and "Scandinavian in a CV".[4] Cash was raised in the working-class Kopli subdistrict of Tallinn.[5][6][7]
In his youth, Cash was reportedly a graffiti artist.[7][8] He has said that his drug use led him to be "ejected" from schooling.[5] He never graduated from secondary school, despite sitting for exams, and later took up painting and dancing instead of formal education.[5]
In the dance scene, Cash is a known freestyle dancer with a very distinct style, using elements of popping, krumping, and breakdancing.[7]

Other ventures
[edit]Fashion Week Stunts
[edit]Tommy Cash hit the front rows of the fashion show during Fashion Weeks in Paris, and Milan, with his performance art, since 2022.[88] "He is a visual feast sitting front row at fashion shows", wrote Enfnts Terribles magazine.[89] Jake Gilbert of Highsnobiety magazine wrote, "The artist and musician is a perpetual outsider all-star, forever dominating the fashion week discourse with some of the most insane outfits you've ever seen in public".[90] His first performance was at the Rick Owens' fashion show on 23 June 2022, during Paris Fashion Week Men's 2022. That time Tomas wore a nude thong attended, overgrown wig and fake toenails.[91][92] Late, he exercised in the middle of an Amiri catwalk, and became a baby, complete with a person pushing his stroller at the Marine Serre's show.[93] In Fall 2022, Tommy was seen knitting at the Loewe Spring/Summer 2023 fashion show,[93] carried a human backpack during the Rick Owens' parade,[94] and cosplayed a paparazzi at the Balenciaga runway show in Milan.[95]
For me and my team these performances are like anti-fashion, you know? We are not embracing being dressed like brand pros. It’s like a Dali approach.
—Tommy Cash during his interview with Berliner Zeitung, in December 2022.[96]
On 22 February 2023, at the Diesel Fall/Winter 2023/24 show in Milan, Tammemets dressed as a cleaning lady ("babushka") with a bucket and a mop in hand.[97] During Paris Fashion Week 2023, Tommy dressed as Anna Wintour at the special event by Isamaya Lips.[98] On 2 March 2023, for the Paco Rabanne fashion show, Cash filled his face with piercings.[99] Next day, rapper wore a prosthetic vagina and claded in tight "Sue Me" tanktop at Rick Owens' fashion show.[100][101] Jake Silbert of Highsnobiety magazine noted, "his masterpiece is (fortunately?) too realistic to be allowed in Instagram or Tik Tok videos". On 7 March 2023, Tommy Cash arrived half-asleep, wearing a pristine bedspread and several pillows on his back, at the Y/Project fashion show.[102] In slippers and blue pajamas, he took his seat front row alongside with American rapper Tyga and Canadian singer Avril Lavigne.[103]
In June 2023, Tomas dressed as a contemporary version of French mime artist Marcel Marceau, promoting the new collaboration "Crocs x MSCHF", during the Rick Owens' runway show in Paris.[104][105] Alexandre Marain of Vogue France, described that outfit as "somewhat creepy". At Marine Serre's Spring 2024 show, Tommy appeared wearing a Cousin Itt-style head-to-toe blonde hair suit.[106] Then Cash attended the Jean Paul GaultierxJulien Dossena haute couture show in a nude muscular suit.[107] Also he went to the Doublet show dressed as a dining table replete with sea food, glasses and candles.[108] Later, Highsnobiety magazine wrote, "One might say that Cash came to serve".[109] In July 2023, Steff Yotka of Ssence wrote, "But what about Tommy Cash’s brazen costume play, which some regarded as Insta fodder, but to me seems like the mark of a true fashion freak in the best sense".[110]
In Fall 2023, at Diesel’s Spring/Summer 2024 show in Milan, Cash arrived to the event dressed as a homeless person.[111][112] Elliot Hoste of Dazed, opined: "Cash’s homeless cosplay wasn’t clever, it was dumb and offensive".[111] According to Cash himself, he didn’t wear the outfit to cause a stir, he wanted to raise awareness.[113] In the front row of the Boss 2023 fashion show, Tommy Cash dressed in an ultra technological features outfit that inspired by a cyborg-human Inspector Gadget.[114]
On 25 January 2024, Tommy appeared carrying a sky-high stack of designer boxes and shopping bags at the Maison Margiela Artisanal Couture Spring 2024 show.[115][116] As part of Paris Fashion Week 2024, at the Vetements Womenswear Fall/Winter 2024/25 show, he dressed in a inflatable latex outfit, created by Indian designer Harri,[117][118] and cosplayed as a treasure hunter with the metal detector at Enfants Riches Déprimés fashion show on 3 March 2024.

Design
[edit]Early in his career, Tomas made clear his interest in fashion and desire to work in the clothing design industry. Regarding this, he said, "It’s amazing to do different stuff while we’re also working on music. At the end of the day, when you have something physical, it’s different. It’s like an art piece almost…".[125] In 2018, Cash released a clothing line that subversively imitates American styles with European elements and in-jokes.[126] Rick Owens has teamed up with Tammemets for a limited-edition hoodie collaboration, in late 2019.[127]
Loafa, the bread-shaped sofa (2021)
[edit]In the beginning of 2021, Tommy Cash has put out feelers for a collaboration with IKEA, presenting the bread-shaped sofa paired with a carpet designed by Canadian artist Gab Bois.[128][129][130] Called "Loafa", it’s basically their interpretation of Mario Bellini’s 1970's Camaleonda sofa with brioche buns.[131][132] "IKEA told me if we get 10,000 comments under this post they will release the Loafa…coming to your nearest IKEA söön", said Cash in Instagram. Lately, IKEA representative confirmed that there has been no official collaboration with the rapper, and they also do not see the project as feasible.[133][134]

"When I said to adidas that I want to make the longest shoe in the world as our collab, they were like, Wtf, Tommy. But five months later here we are," the rapper wrote on Instagram.[137] Brad Nash of GQ Australia, stating: "Tommy Cash's adidas collab is the best, most ridiculous sh*t we've seen all year",[138] Daniel Rogers of Dazed opined: "Now, if we’re talking COVID restrictions, these sneakers have surely got every social distancing regulation covered. Unfortunately though, us peasants will have to continue to rub up against each other as this gargantuan pair is a one-off, made solely for Cash".[139] Although the extra-long Superstars are a bespoke piece, the rapper's collaboration with Adidas also spawned a more wearable pair of mismatched trainers – one black, one white and both normally sized. A limited number of this pared-back version, which features Tommy's signature laser-engraved on the heel and a yin and yang print on the insole, was made available to the public via a raffle.[140]
