The 2011–12 Hereford United season was the club's 91st season, 3rd consecutive year in League Two and 31st overall in the Football League. The season covers the period from 1st July 2011 to 30th June 2012.

Season summary[edit]

Sam James was appointed Hereford United manager on 1st July 2011, replacing previous boss Jamie Pitman. The club's 2010–11 Player of the Season and top goalscorer, Stuart Fleetwood, was sold to Luton Town for an undisclosed fee. Experienced defender Stefan Stam, on loan from Yeovil Town in the previous campaign, moved to Edgar Street permanently upon his release and was made club captain.

The Bulls enjoyed an exceptional league season, smashing the League Two points record, remaining unbeaten at home, and losing just three times all season. Particular highlights included a 6–0 away win at Bristol Rovers in January, a 5–0 thumping of rivals Shrewsbury Town in March, and the 1–0 win at Plymouth Argyle which sealed Hereford's promotion to League One. Summer signing Yoann Arquin was the league's standout player, with a combined total of 56 goals and assists across all competitions, and Hereford were helped by the performances of everpresent goalkeeper Adam Bartlett, much-improved defender János Kovács, creative midfielders Joe Colbeck, Nicky Featherstone and James McQuilkin, and striker Sean Canham.

A remarkable FA Cup run saw Hereford overcome Premier League side Fulham to reach the FA Cup 5th Round for the first time in their history. Rob Purdie etched his name into FA Cup folklore with the only goal in the quarter-final against Liverpool, which booked Hereford's miraculous FA Cup semi-final spot; the Bulls narrowly lost to eventual winners Manchester United. Hereford enjoyed Wembley glory through Delroy Facey, who returned from a three-month injury to find an 120th minute winner in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy Final against Charlton.
