Wikipedia WikiProjects[edit]

The following templates are for members and participants in various Wikipedia WikiProjects. Simply add this userbox to your user page to indicate your affiliation. Of course, if you aren't participating, you probably shouldn't display the userbox.

Wikibooks WikiProject Bartending and Wikipedia WikiProject Bartending[edit]

WikiProject Bartending supports both the Bartending Guide on the English Wikibooks and all bartending-related encyclopedic material on the English Wikipedia. Place the appropriate userboxes on your Wikipedia user page. You should use the Wikibooks userboxes on your Wikibooks user page. Please also add your name to both of the lists of active participants on English Wikibooks and on English Wikipedia.
This user is a WikiBooks participant in the WikiProject Bartending.

Trans-wiki usage of my userboxes[edit]

Since there are already hundreds, if not thousands, of userboxes that describe gender, heritage, values, beliefs, orientations, physical traits, addictions, and views on nearly any topic, I am not likely to create any of that type of userbox, and I am very unlikely to make such a box even upon request.

My main interest in creating new userboxes are for WikiProjects and sister Wikis. I now try to make userboxes I create as cross-wiki compatible as possible. Theoretically, you should be able to pick up one of my userboxes here, copy it to your favorite wiki, and it has a good chance of working as-is.

I have noticed that most WikiMedia Foundation sites only have the Template:Userbox installed, and several of those are older versions or custom versions that do not support the same attributes as the ones do here. To help with that, I now install three templates on every wiki where I setup a user page. The templates are: {{{{ns:user}}:Willscrlt/UBX/Userbox}}, {{{{ns:user}}:Willscrlt/UBX/Userbox-r}}, and {{{{ns:user}}:Willscrlt/UBX/Userbox-2}}. The "{{ns:user}}" simply means "User" or whatever the local user namespace is on the other wiki based on its language.

If I do not have an account on your favorite wiki, you are welcome to copy the contents of these templates to your own account. You could even save it in the main template namespace. For example, you might add my Userbox-2 to a wiki that only has Userbox and name it Template:Userbox-2 — if local wiki policies permit you to do so. Otherwise, you should probably install it in your own user space as I have done. Change the username on the local machine to your username (it would be kind of silly to point it to my name if I don't have an account there).

Most of my newer userboxes include a version number and link to my version of the userbox. I do ask that you keep that information intact for troubleshooting and support. If a template "breaks" it will be helpful to be able to compare it to the same version. I also consider it to be adequate attribution compliance for GFDL, Creative Commons, or other licensing requirements. Note: If you trans-wiki this outside of the WikiMedia Foundation sites, you will need to change the link to my user boxes to read something like this:
//en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Willscrlt/UBX

Because of the fairly esoteric trans-wiki syntax, these templates will not be as easy for other editors to edit unless they have a good understanding of templates, variables, magic words, parser functions, and the parser functions extension. That doesn't mean that the userboxes are difficult to use—quite the contrary. It just means that if someone tries to tweak one of the master Userbox templates a bit, the templates are likely to break. Also, I can't guarantee that they will work on every wiki out there. I constantly find situations where the templates have to be tweaked a bit to improve compatibility. That is why the version numbers increase. If a current userbox works for you, there's probably no reason to upgrade it to the latest version. I probably just fixed something that only shows up on a few wikis.

Feel free to leave me a comment or question about my userboxes. If you have an interesting idea for a new userbox, you may talk to me about it there, too.
