It would be really helpful if you would follow things like the use of en dash between years, and comma placement relative to birth years etc., rather than inserting errors for others to clean up. Dicklyon (talk) 02:42, 6 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, as Dicklyon said above, please use an en dash between years (e.g., 1949–2017), not a hyphen (e.g., not 1949-2017). Thanks, Biogeographist (talk) 20:53, 7 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I've reverted you at your most recent edits to get your attention on this. Please ask here if you need help on what we mean or how to enter en dashes. Dicklyon (talk) 15:21, 8 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Please stop your disruptive editing.

If you continue to disrupt Wikipedia, as you did at List of Indian journalists, you may be blocked from editing. Your refusal to talk back, and continuation of wrong-style edits, is disruptive. Dicklyon (talk) 23:40, 11 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Attention sought[edit]

Hi. I have blocked you in order to get your attention to the multiple outstanding notices above. Please acknowledge. El_C 23:53, 11 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, unblocked with apologies. Conflated with another IP. El_C 00:03, 12 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Still, please acknowledge by editing here. You're not making progress as long as I'm reverting all your edits. Dicklyon (talk) 00:10, 12 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Dashes[edit]

The issue that caused the discussion about you on WP:AN/I seems to be that you are using a hyphen in date ranges (1999-2000), rather than a longer en dash (1999–2000), which is the preferred dash for dates on Wikipedia. I don't know what kind of computer you're on, so if it isn't obvious to you how to produce en dashes, perhaps you could google it for your system. That would help. Many thanks, SarahSV (talk) 00:13, 12 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The actual issue seems to be that IP editors on mobile get zero notification of talk page comments. So he's clueless that I'm reverting his edits and trying to discuss. Dicklyon (talk) 00:39, 12 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Progress[edit]

I see here you're using dashes now. Good on you! Dicklyon (talk) 01:16, 12 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Nope, that was a fluke. Bad to the bad old ways. Dicklyon (talk) 17:15, 12 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

You know, dashes or not, the edits I see being made by this IP are net-positive, so I don't want to discourage them. Most readers won't notice the difference. Is there some fairly straightforward way to run a fix to get the correct character (AWB or the like)? TJRC (talk) 03:03, 13 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Well, they're showing no sign of being discouraged! I don't have any easy way to fix them, though AWB could help. Tony1 runs a dash-fixing script that might also help; not sure what he uses for article lists to run it on. Dicklyon (talk) 19:23, 13 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@TJRC and Dicklyon: When I see many instances of this (or a similar) problem on one page, I copy all the wikitext into a text editor and batch change all the instances with regular expressions, then paste the wikitext back into the web editor. Biogeographist (talk) 19:28, 13 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I've done that, too. For these dashes, I'd probably use the built-in editor's "replace all" to replace all -19 with –19 and -20 with –20, then look at the changes and did if it caught anything it shouldn't. Then I'd replace "- " with "– " or something like that and repeat. Then look at remaining hyphens. Takes time. I'm not sure I could make a regular expression that would make it possible without inspecting all the changes. Dicklyon (talk) 19:36, 13 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
If the problem is just in date ranges of the style 1900–2000, a regular expression that works in my text editor is: ([0-9]{4})-([0-9]{4}) to \1–\2. (This may not work in all versions of regex.) I do a rapid one-by-one find-and-replace with this regex, and there are rarely exceptions. Biogeographist (talk) 19:53, 13 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
There are also sometimes 2-digit end dates and open intervals. I realize it's doable, but hardly worth my time if the guy won't even say where he's getting the numbers. Dicklyon (talk) 21:35, 13 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Adding birth dates to lists of people[edit]

I appreciate your hard work adding birth and death dates to lists of people, but your edits are unsourced. When you copy stuff from one Wikipedia article and add it to another Wikipedia article, you are assuming the article you are copying is correct, and so often it isn't. That is why using Wikipedia as a source is not permitted. Thanks. Magnolia677 (talk) 22:19, 6 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

You even added unsourced birthdates for people who had red links. Magnolia677 (talk) 22:31, 6 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Please respond to these issues I've brought up. Thank you. Magnolia677 (talk) 14:00, 7 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Magnolia677: See Dicklyon's comment above in § Dashes. It explains why this user isn't responding to anyone here. Biogeographist (talk) 20:50, 7 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Biogeographist: This editor has probably added thousands of dates to various lists by cutting and pasting them from one article to the next. Many dates that were copied were unsourced on the original biographies. Spreading unsourced content from one article to another is not a good way to build an encyclopedia. Magnolia677 (talk) 20:59, 7 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I gave up on reverting all this editor's edits, but I still think that's a good idea, at least until he discovers what a talk page is. Dicklyon (talk) 00:15, 8 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I blocked the user for 48h and provided the link here in the block notice.--Ymblanter (talk) 19:15, 15 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

They are continuing to change dates and/or add dates to articles, as in List of Latin American artists, List of English women artists, List of Native American artists, Women Artists of Bangladesh. This is going to be a nightmare to check all those dates and unravel any errors unless it stops. Netherzone (talk) 15:03, 18 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I now blocked for a month. Whereas in a normal situation I would have chosen 72h, ir at most a week, I am afraid that they are currently net negative, and if they want to continue editing Wikipedia they need to find their talk page and understand what the problem with their editing is.--Ymblanter (talk) 15:34, 18 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

March 2022[edit]

Hello, I'm Adakiko. I noticed that you made an edit to a biography of a living person, Marie Farge, but you didn't support your changes with a citation to a reliable source. Wikipedia has a strict policy concerning how we write about living people, so please help us keep such articles accurate. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. Adakiko (talk) 04:45, 12 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
