Reminder[edit]

Thanks for that - will do. Have you had a chance to get a look at the wikiproject page today? I've given it a dust off. I've also convassed everyone who's a wikipedian architect to sign up so we will hopefully see some more activity there. I've also created the framework for a planning and urban studies subportal - I've been writing a bit about planning in the uk and there's quite a few that might be interested in that. PS congratulations regarding your nomination for adminship - looks like it's going to be a conclusive affirmation from the wikipedia community, nice one mate. --Mcginnly 22:42, 16 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject:Urban studies and planning[edit]

It does seem bare at the moment. We might be able to find more support and input from the people at WP:CITY. Do you have a link to the planning portal? DVD+ R/W 23:08, 16 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • No - I wasn't aware there was a planning portal - If you find one please let me know.--Mcginnly 23:12, 16 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I didn't create this article, but I was a little bit alarmed at how fast you jumped on deleting it. Maybe wait a minute...I was just starting to put up a hangon when you took it down. It was created as an attack, but I had removed the attacking part and made it a stub about a reputable (I think) company.

Oh yeah, congrats on getting admin. --Alphachimp talk 04:43, 17 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Dear DVD R W/Archive2,
Thank you very much for your support on my recent RfA. I am pleased to announce that it passed with a tally of 72/11/1, and I am now an administrator. I'll be taking things slowly at first and getting used to the tools, but please let me know if there are any admin jobs I can do to help you, now or in the future. —Cuiviénen 02:24, 18 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Please block User:Phillipwelch@hotmail.com (block) and User:Nemesis88@wikipedia.org (block) because e-mails are inappropriate content for a username. Thanks! --Bigtop (customer service - thank you for your cooperation.) 05:33, 18 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

WP:U states, "Using your e-mail address as your username is not a good idea". Though usernames with e-mail addresses are listed under inappropriate user names, I don't think they are prohibited, just advised against. I need other opinions or policy before blocking these users, who don't seem to be causing trouble. DVD+ R/W 05:45, 18 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, asshole. Why did you delete my article stub on the Earth sandwich? A simple Google search would have shown that I wasn't just making it up. I actually learned about it from the New York Times's website. Next time take a bit more care before deleting someone's work, okay? --Plainsong 19:11, 18 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well, sorry you seem upset. It had been deleted before, and when I deleted it it had been tagged for deletion by someone else. Others had considered this to be patent nonsense as well, so don't just take this out on me, make it a better article. DVD+ R/W 19:29, 18 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • I'm particularly upset that the entry was deleted without either your: a) contacting me (if you look at my contribuition history, I'm clearly not a vandal) or b) opening up your deletion decision to at least some public comment. However, I didn't know that it had been deleted earlier (there was no notice of such prior action when I created the article), so I can understand why you just went ahead and deleted it. Next time, I hope you'll be just a little more careful. For now, apology accepted.

Considering that people actually went to the trouble to place pieces of bread on opposite sides of the planet, though, it's hard to see it as "patent nonsense"...at least look at it as the kind of Internet meme that's usually covered on this website.

In response to some administrator's comment left on my talk page, I don't consider my comment on here abusive. I regularly use words like "asshole" to convey my frustration. Please be tolerant of my own cultural norms and don't try to impose yours on me. If I had threatened to Fedex a tarantula to DVD guy, or left repeated messages with "foul language" on his talkpage, then I would consider such a warning deserved. But to rush off to formally warn me of abuse after only trying to express my frustration over my article's being wrongfully deleted--I wouldn't say that creates a welcoming atmosphere here at Wikipedia.

Still, I'm sorry if you were hurt by my comment. (Yes, this is one of those half-assed apologies with a conditional phrase attached. That's the best you're gonna get from me.)--Plainsong 20:30, 18 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I do not know you, but I am the admin who placed the warning on User talk:Plainsong, after I happened upon his/her comment here. On the basis of his/her insincere apology and notification that (s)he regularly demeans others, I've placed him/her on a block for a cooling off period for his/her frustration. We don't need loose cannons on Wikipedia, and I'm sorry you had to be the object of his/her attack. Pollinator 21:00, 18 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re. Edit count[edit]

Oh, don't worry, hun - the edit counter simply displays all the usernames that begin with the letter string you're typing, that's all. You can try it by searching for different names. Those things you read there are other usernames - aparently, someone saw fit to create these accounts... whatever his motives were (tho I have an idea! ;) Anyway, thank you so much for warning me, dear - and congrats on your adminship! You truly deserve it! (btw, someday you'll have to tell me why you chose your own username - it's quite... original! ;) Big hug, Phædriel tell me - 22:11, 24 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I see, It is different usernames. I thought they hacked the edit counter. About my username, I started wikipedia as David Rowe, part of my given name, but changed it to DVD R W because it is very close to the name for the discs, though without the vowels. I am not that concerned with hiding my identity, but like to have a pen name for this project. I think of it as a combination of my name and the discs, like DVD(David) R(read) W(write) or just the name without the vowels, D(a)V(i)D R(o)W(e). I don't know if spelling it out like this makes it sound stupid, but that is how I think of it. DVD+ R/W 22:24, 24 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Now that's ingenious :) But you never clarified whether you are +RW or -RW! (j/k) Have a great weekend, dear David! Hugz, Phædriel tell me - 22:30, 24 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wolkenbügel[edit]

It seems it's due to you that "Wolkenbügel" is neuter on the page Deconstructivism. Unless there has been a grammatical change within the last 80 years, the gender of "Bügel", hence "Wolkenbügel", is masculine, and the building is called "Der Wolkenbügel", not "Das Wolkenbügel". Since the photomontage shows two buildings, a more appropriate title might be "Die Wolkenbügel" (the nominative plural article is the same for all genders). Can you provide any references? I suppose you didn't guess the gender. Ncik 00:54, 28 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I got it from El Lissitzky. Go ahead with corrections as you see fit. DVD+ R/W 01:02, 28 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Deconstructivism - after the storm[edit]

During yesterday's (entirely unexpected for me) turbulent edits of the decon article it seems your paragraph on criticality and comparisons between critical regionalism and deconstructivism got edited out by User:Sdedeo. I rather liked that paragraph, perhaps we can make it less jargonistic. How about:-

Critical responses[edit]

Since the publication of Kenneth Frampton's Modern Architecture, a critical history (first edition 1980) there has been a keen consciousness of the role of criticism. Whilst referencing Derrida as a philosophical influence, deconstructivism can also be seen as having as much a basis in critical theory as the other major off-shoot of postmodernism, critical regionalism. The two aspects of critical theory, urgency and analysis, are found in deconstructivism. There is a tendency to re-examine and critique other works or precedents in deconstructivism, and also a tendency to set esthetic issues in the foreground. An example of this is the Wexner Center. The Wexner Center brings vital architectural topics such as function and precedent to prominence and displays their urgency in architectural discourse, in an analytical and critical way (need to say by what means - an example). The difference between criticality in deconstructivism and in critical regionalism, is that critical regionalism reduces the level of complexity involved and maintains a clearer analysis while attempting to reconcile modernist architecture with local differences, in effect a modernist "vernacular" (very long sentence). Critical regionalism displays a lack of self-criticism and a utopianism of place. Deconstructivism maintains a level of self-criticism, as well as external criticism and tends towards maintaining a level of complexity.[citation needed]

Some architects identified with the movement, notably Frank Gehry who often takes an anti-philosophical stance,[1] have actively rejected the classification of their work as deconstructivist. Others remain critical as much of their own work as that of precedents and contemporaries.

--Mcginnly 15:06, 29 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Edit as you see fit. DVD+ R/W 20:42, 29 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I've put the above back into the article. I would be greatful if you could proof read it and perhaps add the citation. many thanks. --Mcginnly 14:11, 4 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
As far as a proof read it looks pretty good to me. More refs would be good, but I unfortunately don't have any, except maybe for the the first line. I would move the last breakaway line, however, back onto the end of the paragraph as it says something about deconstructivist self-criticism, maybe enough if you ask me. I started a disscuison on the dinosaur talk page about if the article should have temporary semi-protection do to the recent vandalism. I thought it would be good idea to contact an adim.--Scott3 02:21, 12 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No problem. Shadow1 22:20, 13 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I noticed that you commented about the obvious sockpuppetry on this page (it was restored after 6 months). I've taken the case to Wikipedia:Suspected sock puppets/Sponkerde, listing the first editor as the sock master. I figured that, since you had the same suspicions as me, you might want to comment in the discussion. Regards, Alphachimp talk 01:46, 16 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

They're actually aliases of the North Carolina Vandal, who is blocked on sight. I didn't realize that at first. There's actually a special template for indefinetely banned NCV socks (there are >= 200!). I've reported it to WP:AIV. Alphachimp talk 02:09, 16 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Template redlinks[edit]

DVD, Have you seen any guidelines about adding redlinks to Templates? This user has started his Wikipedia experience with valid redlinks added to "list" articles, but also added these redlinks to templates. Continued after polite request to stop by another user. Re: User_talk:167.206.190.114. Thank you, dogears (talk)

Hi Dogears, nice to hear from you. To cut quickly to your question, I know of no guidelines specifically about redlinks on templates. There is Wikipedia:Red link, for their general usage. If they are not pertinent, they should be removed. If they are valid, the article can always be started, maybe with a stub or brief start. It seems like the latter is the case with User:167.206.190.114's template additions. user:Zero Gravitas makes a good point that nav templates help users through existing articles, and that they shouldn't contain red links, and Zero Gravitas has filled in one of the links to the Alaska template with an article. The Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Bronx, templates are another matter. If the Neighborhoods seem like they will eventually be filled in, it might be best to leave them or have a go at starting the articles. Or they can be removed, and always added again later when the articles are there. Hope this helps, Regards, DVD+ R/W 03:32, 20 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

CotW, thank you![edit]

Hello, DVD R W, thank you very much for your support to the nomination of Spanish architecture, and for your contributions to the article. I am glad to say that, finished the process for nomination, the article has achieved the CotW. However, due to your suport and other editors´, the article is growing quickly. I don´t know how to update the new CotW: Could you do it for me? Thank you again, --Garcilaso 09:47, 24 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've updated the CoTW. One concern is Wikipedia:Community Portal/COTW, which typically reproduces the article's lead, and since the lead is currently very short for the article, I added your nomination statement. Though the nomination statement is an excellent summary, once we have more of a lead, see WP:LEAD, we can substitute it. DVD+ R/W 19:06, 24 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Martin Luther Vandalism[edit]

Hi! A vandal attacked the Martin Luther page in exactly the same fashion as the one you blocked. It is User talk:200.3.154.88. This user has just two warns at the moment, but I'm very suspicious of the exact same vandalism appearing just after a block. Thought you'd like to know. --CTSWyneken(talk) 16:23, 25 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Who made the illustration and what does Chuis mean? I like it even though I don't know. DVD+ R/W 03:20, 27 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
"Chuis" is french slang for "I am." It's a contraction of "Je suis." It's a doodle I scanned....I figure I might as well give myself an interesting face on wikipedia ;). The ikiroid (talk·desk·Advise me) 03:36, 27 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Are there other similar terms for the conjugations tu es, il/elle/on est, vous etez, nous sommes, or ils sont? DVD+ R/W 03:47, 27 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, "tu es" is contracted into "t'es," "il est" is often pronounced "iyest," and the vocative form of the pronoun is put before them. So in spoken french they say "toi, t'es" for "tu es," "Moi, chuis" for "je suis," "Lui, iyest" for "il est" and "Leur, i(l)sont" for "ils sont." The "nous" isn't used very much, spoken french (as well as informal written french) uses "on" instead of "nous" for "we." The "vous" form is kept the same because of liason (it's pronounced "vou zetez," so there isn't much to contract).
It's quite an interesting phenomenon in language, if you like reading about how contractions and slang change grammar I'd suggest "The Unfolding of Language" by Guy Deutscher........he argues how these forms may eventually be considered a new conjugation (i.e. "Moi chuis" the "chuis" may become regarded as an irregular verb and "Moi" would replace "je").
More specifically, he finds that in the noun inflections in languages like Latin and Russian (which you know a bit of?) the endings may have been prepositions to begin with, and then contracted to the point that they were regarded as part of the word (you see the process halfway finished in Japanese with its postpositions like "wa," "ga," "ni"). I find it helps to think of the endings as seperate words. The ikiroid (talk·desk·Advise me) 13:44, 27 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Do you think there will be enough audience to create a portal to organize cultural heritage topics like architectural conservation and historic preservation with related articles including historic houses, National Register of Historic Places, English Heritage, National trust, Landmark Trust, UNESCO World Heritage Sites, etc., etc.? Any comments or suggestions? Thanks —dogears (talk • contribs) 03:22, 27 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You can submit the proposal at Wikipedia:Portal/Proposals to see if they approve, it is a fairly tough crowd though. One proposal I voted for, Urban Studies and Planning didn't pass. You can make it per Wikipedia:Portal/Instructions-- it isn't necessary to submit, though it is nice to have that kind of support. You can always incorporate more from this area into the architecture portal, which would help the architecture portal rather than draw away from it. I worry that there might not be enough articles, and featured articles for a separate portal on this topic, but a portal can be made and maintained on less than expected so who knows really. Thank you for your warning about the plagiarism carried out by one of our students on this page on 27 July. We are in the process of idenitifying the student responsible and sanctions will be applied as well as an educative process about Wikipedia.

Please note that on our User Talk page for the school's IP address here I have requested that such vandalism be reported to me personally, the school's Deputy Principal, and supplied my email address for that purpose. We want to work with Wikipedia both to combat vandalism and educate young people about the values of Wikipedia. Thank you.—The preceding unsigned comment was added by Ishel99 (talkcontribs) .

Thank you for your concern for Wikipedia. A minor correction though with regards to my warning, the warning was about an edit to the article plagiarism, linked here, not about an instance of plagiarism. Though it was an unconstructive edit it was relatively minor. Another thing worth noting is that it may be easier for editors to leave a message on your talk page than to email you about unconstructive edits from your school's IP. That way they don't have to leave their desks at wikipedia. You can link to your Wikipedia user page and talk page from the school's IP. Regards, DVD+ R/W 01:37, 31 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

My RfA and your vote[edit]

Hi again David,
Thanks for participating in my RFA! Ultimately, no consensus was reached, but I still appreciate the fact that you showed up to add in your two cents. You can feel free to talk to me about it or add some advice on my improvement page.

My helpful edit.[edit]

Since a female relative of mine married into an Azerbaijani family, I'd thought I'd share my knowledge of these people, and add to the article. I don't think my edit should have been reverted at all, and I would like you to revert your revert, or add my information to the article proper.

Thanks for your help.—The preceding unsigned comment was added by 70.18.20.252 (talkcontribs) .

A good strategy in editing articles, is to work with what is existing, and use text or web references to cite valid sources for what you add. Your edit dismissed and erased most of what is a featured article, that is, one that is among Wikipedia's best, and replaced it with stereotype-like observations. That said, I am not going to re-revert my edit. DVD+ R/W 02:08, 6 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
"Stereotype" is just another word for "I don't really know what I'm talking about, but you're being a meanie", right? Well, regardless, this has dismayed me from making further contributions to Wikipedia. I won't be bothering you or your site any longer.—The preceding unsigned comment was added by 70.18.20.252 (talkcontribs) .
Sorry you want to leave, you're right I really don't know much about this topic. I also don't want to be discouraging. You'd be better taking this up with the contributors to that article, whose work you tried to erase, maybe now, or better later when the article is not on the main page and when they aren't as likely to be busy. DVD+ R/W 02:27, 6 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
