Contested deletion[edit]

This page should not be speedily deleted because…I am trying to add an article about an acclaimed U.S. mystery writer by the name of Twist Phelan --Fpordes (talk) 23:50, 20 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • That's kind of what I was thinking was your intention, but there is another problem: it was written in a very, very promotional manner. I do notice that you have a copy in your sandbox so you're not really losing anything, but I do want to stress that you should re-write substantial portions of the article. Sentences such as "Success as a plaintiff's trial attorney suing corporate scoundrels enabled her to retire in her early thirties to live on an ocean-going boat and in various places around the world" come across as very promotional. I'd also recommend not using the term "corporate scoundrels" because not only is that a POV term, but it's also something that could be seen as potentially troublesome if someone that she sued were to take exception to being labeled as such. You should also avoid calling the author by her first name because that's too casual for Wikipedia. To be honest, the way the article is written makes it seem like you are a paid editor editing on behalf of Phelan. If that's the case then I highly recommend that you read over our WP:COI guidelines. You can still edit with a conflict of interest, but you will need to be exceedingly cautious in how you edit and how you phrase things. You'll need to follow guidelines very carefully, especially guidelines on neutrality and sourcing. (WP:NPOV, WP:PUFFERY, WP:RS) Offhand I'm not seeing a lot of sourcing coming up in a search so you will also want to make sure that she passes WP:AUTHOR as well. Just be aware that popularity does not count towards notability (WP:ITSPOPULAR) and not all awards are considered major enough to give notability, let alone absolute notability. I've reviewed the sandbox article and declined it because it still has multiple issues, one of which was WP:COPYVIO from the author's website. Tokyogirl79 (。◕‿◕。) 05:47, 21 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • A small update on some of the awards. Some of them could count towards notability, but the thing to be careful of is that not all of the regional awards are really notable enough to keep on that basis alone. You can use some of them to count towards notability, but not overall notability. Also, only wins count towards notability so being a finalist isn't really enough to give notability. This is pretty much something applied to all awards, so for example: a movie isn't automatically notable because they're nominated for an Oscar, but they would be notable if they won. We also have to be careful of what we list as an award because not all organizations are created equally, so an award from one organization wouldn't mean as much as say, winning the top award of the most notable mystery organization. (IE, an Edgar Award) This is all just stuff to keep in mind when searching for sources. I did see where you said she'd received reviews, but you would have to link to the reviews so we could see how she's mentioned and so on. Be aware that there is a lot of guff over trade reviews so they shouldn't be your main/only source for reviews. I think they're usable, but you will get some pushback from other editors if that's all you have. Tokyogirl79 (。◕‿◕。) 06:04, 21 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • I ended up having some time and cleaned it up. It looks like you took everything verbatim from her website. In the future, please don't do that! Even if she gives you permission, we'll still need to have it re-written to fit our neutrality policy. Also, I wasn't able to find any record of one of the awards she received, the Colorado Gold Award, so I didn't list it. We'll need something other than her website to back that up as far as awards go, if you can find record of it on the organization's website. Tokyogirl79 (。◕‿◕。) 08:42, 21 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
