Logo license removal[edit]

I've removed the GFDL information on the two Scientology logos you created and uploaded. According to Jean-Baptiste Soufron, host of Wikimania 2006's copyright forum, your logos constitute derivative works, so you may not license them under the GFDL without the CoS's permission. Furthermore, the derivative nature of the work could confuse your work with the originals, risking trademark infringement.

We can, however, use the actual Scientology logos (via fair use) on the applicable articles. --Davidstrauss 16:02, 4 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

VP Login Trouble[edit]

Glen,

First, I would wish to thank you for approving me to use VandalProof. However, after installing VP and upgrading to 1.2.2, and after being logged in through IE with cookies enabled, VP is not recognizing my log in. Thus, all the buttons remain disabled and I get a page indicating that my login failed. My attempts to resolve this problem myself have been unsuccesful, and thus I would appreciate any assistance you could provide.-- danntm T C 01:37, 9 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • I'm able to logon now. Thanks so much, especially for your quick response.-- danntm T C 01:58, 9 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

VandalProof[edit]

Please can you take me of the approved users for VandalProof. I feel uncomfortable with the stability of the software and it seems to freeze on me when I have upgraded it. --Thorpe | talk 12:17, 9 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your message - I'm sorry to hear about the stability issues, thats such a shame as its an awesome tool! I'm happy to remove you as requested, however may I suggest remaining on the list until you've taken a look at the new VP1.3 and VP2 releases (betas are being tested now, downloads released within the next week or two best guess). I have both versions and they are a HUGE improvement on the original! Just a thought, certainly I will honor your request if you'd prefer sooner (though note being on the list does not open you to any stability issues if you choose not to d/l the program). Thanks again, - Glen 12:26, 9 August 2006 (UTC) PS: If you do get a chance to post your experience/thoughts on the bugs page that would be helpful for future releases too. :)[reply]
I think I will try out the next version. As for now I would prefer it if I was removed. Thank you. --Thorpe | talk 12:30, 9 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome![edit]

Welcome!

Hi, and welcome to the Biography WikiProject! As you may have guessed, we're a group of editors working to improve Wikipedia's coverage of biographies.

A few features that you might find helpful:

There are a variety of interesting things to do within the project; you're free to participate however much—or little—you like:

  • Starting some new articles? Our article structure tips outlines some things to include.
  • Want to know how good our articles are? The assessment department is working on rating the quality of every biography article in Wikipedia.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask another fellow member, and we'll be happy to help you. Again, welcome! We look forward to seeing you around! plange 06:09, 14 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Glen, thank you for taking the time to comment on my RfC at Wikipedia:Requests_for_comment/Vivaldi. I did not ask you to participate in the the RfC, because I thought it would be readily apparent to anyone that viewed the histories of the articles about Jack Hyles, that Arbustoo (talk · contribs) was engaged in a nearly single-handed pursuit to defame the man and his ministry at all costs. I never imagined that so many ignorant fools would think that using the personal blogs of Hyles's enemies to source 90% of the information in an article about Hyles would be acceptable (but I guess these are the same folks that make shows like Jerry Springer popular). I know the man is dead, so WP:BLP doesn't apply, but WP:V is a policy that should always be adhered to. If the same kinds of sources that are used to assault Hyles were allowed in all the articles on Wikipedia, then it would be possible for anybody to just start up a blog and write whatever they wanted and then use that blog as a source to input claims of infidility, sexual impropriety, or even cannibalism.

Obviously there are a number of people that are upset with fundamentalist Christians in America. This is understandable. I have a number of personal disagreements with right-wing fundamentalists too. I despise Bush. I think most preachers are con artists, that are more interested in their own personal fame and wealth than anything else. I am not a Christian.

My only interest in Hyles came because a concerned newbie editor pointed me to Arbustoo's obviously biased edits. I took a good long hard look at them and noticed that nearly every defamatory claim that was made originated with one of three people. The writings used to defame him were the personal blogs and self-published books by these people. These writings should not be acceptable.

The FBI and the police in Hammond both said emphatically on numerous occasions that Hyles and his church were not under investigation for any wrongdoings, however the articles about Hyles, before I came along, made it look like he was cheering on the sidelines while children were being sexually assaulted.

Wikipedia can be so much better than this, and I am happy that you took the time to look into the issue and make your comments.

For an example of the kind of edits that FeloniousMonk is engaged in, take a look at his revert on the Bill Gothard article at [2] He reverted this change where I specifically named the two small groups that were criticising Gothard, and put back in unattributed and unsourced claims linking him to sexual improprieties.

Now I'm starting to ramble, but thanks for participating in Wikipedia and taking the time to defend my positions on my RfC. Vivaldi (talk) 08:35, 14 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You're most welcome[edit]

Glen: Thank you for the feedback re the talk page on Barbara Schwarz. Also, I am a fan of your own critical work on the scientology cult. Best wishes, Orsini 11:26, 14 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

August Esperanza Newsletter[edit]

Program Feature: To-Do List
The Esperanza To-Do List is a place where you may list any request, big or small, for assistance. If you need help with archiving your usertalk, for example, all you need to do is list it here and somebody will help you out. Likewise, if you need help with some area of editing on Wikipedia, list it here! Again, any matter, trivial or not, can be placed on this page. However, all matters listed on this page must not be of an argumentative nature. You do not need to be a member of Esperanza (or this program) to place or fulfill requests on this page. If you don't have any requests, consider coming by and fulfilling a few! This program has not been very active, but has lots of potential!
What's New?
In order to help proposed programs become specific enough to make into full-fledged programs, the In development section of the proposals page has been created. Proposals that are promising, but need to be organized in more detail are listed here. Please take a look at what is there, and help the proposals turn into programs.
To improve both the layout and text of the front page, in an attempt to clarify the image of Esperanza, the front page is going to have some redesigning take place. Please take your creative minds to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Front page redesign to brainstorm good ideas.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  1. In order to make sure all users who join Esperanza are welcomed, a list of volunteers who are willing to welcome new Esperanzians is at Wikipedia:Esperanza/Members#Esperanza_welcomers. Please add yourself if you are interested; we want to make sure all new Esperanza members are welcomed!
  2. The In development section of the proposals page has been created.
  3. Proposals page: Some proposals have been moved to the aforementioned "In development" section, some have been left as a proposal, and others have been archived. For those proposals that were a good idea but didn't necessarily constitute a program, General Esperanzial Actions has been created.
  4. Two small pieces of charter reform will be decided on in a straw poll at Wikipedia talk:Esperanza/Governance. One involves filling the position of any councillors who may leave, the other involves reforming the charter.
  5. Until cooperation with the Kindness Campaign is better defined, it remains as a proposed program.
  6. There is a page for discussing the front page redesign.

Although having the newsletter appear on everyone's userpage is desired, this may not be ideal for everyone. If, in the future, you wish to receive a link to the newsletter, rather than the newsletter itself, you may add yourself to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Newsletter/Opt Out List.

Your comments regarding Mashup (music)[edit]

Thank you for your demeaning comments regarding my edit on the Mashup (music) article. While I did make an incorrect edit (I didn't see the "Synonyms" section), I was going to revert it. As it happens, however, I was pounced upon by two overeager editors, who both, incidentally, have been editing for about a quarter of the time I have. In the future, it would be much appreciated if you gave editors a chance to rectify their mistakes before accusing them of "testing" or vandalizing. Believe me, I have no patience for vandals, but what you did was out of line. 24.126.199.129 06:09, 15 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You are sadly mistaken and politically incorrect, no offense and nothing personal. I am only helping to speak and write the whole real truth without any opinions or lies at all. Thank you for your concern, though. I highly appreciate it. Have a nice day. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 12.174.137.139 (talkcontribs) 03:02, 16 August 2006 (UTC)

I am not sure what I am mistaken about - but I am correct in stating that you cannot make POV statements like "the racist extremist supremacist who is the number one D.O.C. who just uses people and controls them" in articles as it breaches policy. Please stop - Glen 03:09, 16 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately, I don't use IRC -- but I will download 1.3 and 2.0 as soon as they come out! Oh, and I got my first vandalism war wound as a result of using VandalProof - see here. :P –- kungming·2 | (Talk·Contact) 22:55, 13 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

For an example of the kind of edits that FeloniousMonk is engaged in, take a look at his revert on the Bill Gothard article at [5] He reverted this change where I specifically named the two small groups that were criticising Gothard, and put back in unattributed and unsourced claims linking him to sexual improprieties.

Signed...

The truth[edit]

Thanks for VP[edit]

Hello GIen. I just wanted to say thanks for approving me for WP:VP. In my first session, I happened upon a new incarnation of Wikipedia:Long term abuse/The Communism Vandal and was actually able to catch them setting up User:W.I.C. and their talk page, and was able to list them on WP:AIV, where an admin blocked them before they were able to get to deface any articles. Great tool, and I really appreciate being able to help out in protecting the project effectively. --Brian G (Talk) 13:57, 16 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the update. It looks like 1 of the 3 files is not downloading correctly. I've got the prefs and the badwords, but the exe is downloading with a size of 0. Can you please check the link and let me know? I can try it out today and tomorrow, after that will be on vacation for a bit and not sure that I will be able to get on anything better than dialup during that time. Thanks --Brian G (Talk) 22:18, 16 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Callaway Cars Incorporated and other engine tuners[edit]

Glen, I will admit that my first attempt to make a Callaway Cars Incorporated article is very light on content, but I was hoping to expand on it (or let others expand on it too). Could you have not let it go more than a few minutes (well you did allow it to live for 6 minutes - so I should be grateful) before flagging it with a {{db-a7}}?
--ric_man 13:45, 20 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Funnily enough I actually took the tag off before reading your message; as you probably know there's so many articles started each day, and so many of them are business effectively wanting free advertising, that it does mean that unless we can see a reasonable acknowledgment of notability of the subject its usually tagged; as more articles are being created every second. But, in saying that, that's exactly what the {{hangon}} tag is for, then nothing is done until we've consulted with you. In case the speedy tag is added again (by someone else) - that's your best option. If you would like a hand in the creation, or if I can assist in any other way just say the word. Thanks for helping us build Wikipedia! - GIen 13:59, 20 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Question about VandalProof[edit]

Vicca article contains false information now and bad writing[edit]

Joe Beaudoin has added false information to the first two sentences of the article.

Vicca retired from porn movies in 2000. She was, hence, NOT making movies with Nikita Gross until 2002.

In addition, it is highly redundant to use the word "pornographic" as often as poor Joe insists on using it. She was already called a former porn star in the first sentence.

It is not only bad writing for Joe to insist on so many "pornographics," it is weird.—The preceding unsigned comment was added by 68.164.88.92 (talkcontribs) 14 August, 2006.

Hi Glen! Thanks a lot for making my article look more official. I'm of course going to expand it, but first I have to decide what to include in it - there's so much to say. A shiny new mop for you! It doesn't fly (yet) but hope you like it! Cheers -- Samir धर्म 05:18, 25 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You're now an admin. I promoted the current username, we can worry about changing it later as there is a snafu. See WP:CHU in a minute. Have fun with the new tools to help make the project better. Be conservative with them, especially at first and re-read the relevant policies before taking action. Then as you get comfortable, dig in and help out with the backlogs. Again, congrats! - Taxman Talk 13:31, 23 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hooray! Shame you just went to bed (or got off IRC, dammit!). Congratulations! :) --james(talk) 13:35, 23 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

File:Scarlettanager99.jpg Hello, GIen, and thank you for the "fantastic" support on my recent RfA. The final tally was 72/1/0, and I have now been entrusted with the mop. I'll be tentative with the new buttons for a while, and certainly welcome any and all feedback on how I might be able to use them to help the project. All the best, and thanks again! — Deville (Talk) 01:30, 25 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Now that you are a janitor... WP:CP awaits![edit]

Congradulations on the privilage of doing vastly more tiresomely repetitive work on Wikipedia than you ever dreamed of heretofore! Hark, WP:CP (or whatever it's called today) cries out for your loving, kind touch of deletion en masse... If you want something else to do, or have some questions, feel free to ask...
