Untitled section by Guoguo12

I'd appreciate no discussion of my departure. Guoguo12 (Talk)  18:04, 21 June 2011 (UTC)

Best wishes and good luck. --The Σ talkcontribs 20:44, 21 June 2011 (UTC)

Haha, who am I kidding?

What I did here (quitting Wikipedia) was, to quote one editor, "a bloody dumbass thing to do". I even considered using my right to vanish. Just proves that teenagers are far more reckless. (Good thing I'm not an administrator.) One "adult" principle of life, or so the movies say, is that you can't run from the past. Hopefully, when I figure that (and other things) out, I'll be mature enough to try Wikipedia again.

Until then, I'd like to thank everyone on Wikipedia. Knowledge makes the world go 'round. Keep going, Wikipedia. See you in a few.[1] Guoguo12--Talk--  20:48, 21 June 2011 (UTC)

  1. ^ Years, that is. And of course, Wikipedia is still my starting point for research. I wonder if I'll be able to resist fixing formatting errors when I see them. Probably not.

You have my sympathies

I'm not going to try to convince you to stay on Wikipedia, as I don't think it would be effective, so I'll just say you have my sympathies, and good luck doing whatever you're going to be doing in the future. Based on how well you've done on Wikipedia, I'm sure you'll do great. The UtahraptorTalk/Contribs 20:46, 21 June 2011 (UTC)

Thanks. That's really all I can say. Thanks. Guoguo12--Talk--  20:48, 21 June 2011 (UTC)

Well then...

on a much happier, less "zOMG RfA killed another editor" note, goodbye Guoguo, and I too wish you the best :) Nolelover Talk·Contribs 20:54, 21 June 2011 (UTC)

Yes, it has been a pleasure working with you! Best of luck=) Sumsum2010·T·C 21:52, 21 June 2011 (UTC)

A reason to stay

Hi Guoguo - I've never interacted with you, and unfortunately I opposed your RfA. That said, I'm asking you to stay. I think Wikipedia has a lot more to offer than being an admin - I'm not an admin, and find myself busier here than I'd like. I think you should use this place to hone your writing skills, which actually are okay as long as you're careful about the close paraphrasing. It's a lot more exciting to write for the unknown audience who reads wiki articles than to write a paper to hand in to a teacher, imo. Anyway, I'm sure this is a disappointment, but don't dwell on it, and stick around and become a content editor. After all, wikipedia is all about building content, and it's editors like yourself who, I think, have the most to gain here. For whatever it's worth. Truthkeeper88 (talk) 20:58, 21 June 2011 (UTC)

Thoughts

I know you don't want attention now for the sake of attention, but have some unsolicited, hopefully not too patronizing advice. Some of this I would have written near the end of your RfA, but it was closed before I got to it.

Take a few days off. Relax. Focus on some other activities for awhile. Think about your priorities. Think about some of the lessons you've learned.

After a few days away, come back if—and only if—you think you'll enjoy participating again. There's no time limit. You don't have to announce that you're retired or semi-retired or unretired or ambivalent or whatever. Just edit, if you want to, or don't edit, if you don't want to, and do the best job you can at whatever you choose to do, whether it's Wikipedia or something totally different.

If you do stick around, you might want to read Wikipedia:Guidance for younger editors if you haven't already and if it's relevant to your situation and if you think it might be helpful to you. You can try the current version, or the tl;dr version that I wrote originally (linked at the top of the page). If you have any suggestions for making the essay more useful, put them on the talkpage.

Regards, Newyorkbrad (talk) 21:07, 21 June 2011 (UTC)

Both echoing NYB's comments above and noting that he (as ever from one of our most "senior" wikipedians) gives some fine advice. I was delighted to support your RFA and I was dismayed by the vitriolic assult from Sandy Georgia (although she had some good points her intemperate wrath was simply uncalled for). Your efforts here are very much appreciated. SG bought up some issues that you can learn from, but please continue to enjoy the site and carry on adding value to the readership. Best wishes. Well, I'll see. I've been very selfish in leaving, making coming back difficult to say the least. But anyway, thanks guys (including those above). Guoguo12 (Talk)  22:15, 21 June 2011 (UTC)
We'll miss you, but I'd be the first to say you're always welcome to come back. –BuickCenturyDriver 22:19, 21 June 2011 (UTC)

Just a TLDR comment :)

Sandy is a highly experienced user for whom I have a huge respect, and she has an uncanny knack of finding stuff that many of us don't, but she's occasionally outspoken and sometimes doesn't spare the rod (she nearly wrecked my own RfA!). Also on my RfA several others branded me as a child hater - they couldn't have been more wrong, they just didn't didn't dig deep enough or read my user page. These are the problems with many !voters at RfA. I did not !vote on your RfA because I had already made a clean-up intervention that (to me at least) means I must recuse myself. I nevertheless do believe that Sandy raised some important points that just may have something to do with maturity. However, I have come across your work many times and have always been impressed by the way in which you express yourself in most situations and the way you formulated your answers to the questions on your RfA.

That said, I think that from what you have learned through this RfA, you have a lot to offer Wikipedia. In particular, and most especially, in helping other young users to overcome their childishness. I have come across many instances where younger users confuse Wikipedia with a run-of-the-mill Internet forum or blog, and I also understand their misplaced enthusiasm to organise competitions fornew page tagging and Wikilinking, overuse of the barnstar system, overly promotional user pages, and general employ of teenage language when addressing mature creators of articles that unfortunately must be deleted because the rules were simply not understood.

I know it's a terribly embarrassing thing to have those things revealed that Sandy pointed out, but I'm sure that you genuinely did not realise just how seriously using words from another website is taken - I once had a GA nom ditched mainly because of three or four words from another site. Although I was the main contributor to that article, I hadn't added the item myself, but when I checked the refs I didn't recognise a serious COPYVIO. Nowadays, and especially as an admin, I have to be extra special careful not only of what I include, but to dig deep into what others maintain are WP:RS.

Please reconsider your retirement - in spite of the reasons that led you to withdraw from your RfA, you have done a lot of good work here, and are generally very familiar with the rules and how to create and edit articles. Many users have had to take and overcome far worse embarrassment and have gone on to gain a great respect from the community, and even made admin on their 5th run with flying colours. BTW, FWIW, I was the one who rewrote Brad's excellent article to make it a tad more readable for younger editors - in fact my version was actually several bytes longer than what he thought was TLDR! Best,--Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 03:14, 22 June 2011 (UTC)

Ill piggy back so as not to start a new section; I meant my strong support and still do. I wont ask you to reconsider your retirement either though- thats your choice. But its generally hard to get away even if you want.... Anyway, all the best, hope you pull a lemieux one day ;) Ottawa4ever (talk) 06:40, 22 June 2011 (UTC)
And I'm a (chronologically) older Wikipedian who didn't have a chance to participate in your RfA before it was withdrawn, but I want to stop by and say that I think that you were treated very shabbily there, and I also think that both Kudpung and Newyorkbrad have given you some very good comments here, so I agree with them both. Whatever you decide, all the best wishes from me. --Tryptofish (talk) 19:35, 22 June 2011 (UTC)
I opposed your RfA, but I'd like to say I hope you'll stick around. You've shown moxy and staying power, good things in an editor. Good luck to you. Best, MarmadukePercy (talk) 22:08, 22 June 2011 (UTC)

Au revoir

Let's hope it's only au revoir and not goodbye - your work is appreciated here - come back after a rest. :) Brookie :) - he's in the building somewhere! (Whisper...) 10:14, 22 June 2011 (UTC)

Goodbye

We'll miss you over at WikiProject Wikify. We've appreciated your work furthering the project and your work as Assistant then Executive Coordinator. Whenever you come back because I'm sure that you aren't gone for good youll be always welcome back on the project.

Oh... and don't hold it against SandyGeorgia that she opposed you. If her concerns are valid, fix those problems. If not, respond in a civil manner. You needn't leave Wikipedia just because you failed a RfA twice. WikiCopter03:21, 23 June 2011 (UTC)

A kitten for you!

I wish you good luck on whatever you do past Wikipedia and be sure to take care of the kitten. Baseball Watcher22:18, 23 June 2011 (UTC)

Hey

While I never interacted with you on Wikipedia, seeing the treatment of you on your RFA was heartbreaking. I wish I was aware of the "trial" so that I could have helped. The RFA process is very grueling for even more experienced users. I hope after some ime away, you come back! Cheers!SOXROX (talk) 02:53, 29 June 2011 (UTC)

Yaay!

Make it permanent, please! Alzarian16 (talk) 14:26, 2 July 2011 (UTC)

Just to clarify, I meant come back permanently, not retire permanently. Sorry if I confused anyone. Alzarian16 (talk) 04:00, 3 July 2011 (UTC)

Thanks :)

Just realized I never thanked you for the revert of the vandalism on my page. I'm sure that it was just a regular course of action for you, but I still appreciate it. Take care! WDavis1911 (talk) 10:54, 14 September 2012 (UTC)
